Thunderstorm Hits Toronto causing Massive Damage

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Monday, July 8th, a heavy thunderstorm slammed the city of Toronto, Canada, in the evening, and caused major flooding and power outages across the Greater Toronto Area.

A lot of damage was done to this major city, including flooding on the Don Valley Parkway, a main route linking the north and south parts of Toronto, as well as subway and train facilities. The Toronto power grid was running beyond the capacity, as Mayor Rob Ford stated to the city, "We're hanging by a thread. We just have enough power to get through."

Toronto Hydro, the company responsible for supplying electricity to the majority of Toronto, releases the information that there were 70 000 customers without power during that evening. Hospitals are struggling to be kept up with power and other needs. Many street lights were out and traffic inside the city and in the GTA was jam packed.

Roads in Toronto were flooded, and many cars were unable to get past them, and a lot are left on sides of roads. A lawyer who owned a Ferrari rushed to the airport that night, only to have his expensive car stuck in one of the street floods. He abandoned his car, and left for the airport without calling for any help for his Ferrari.

A Go train on the Richmond Hill - Union line was trapped and stopped on its tracks as the area was surrounded and flooded by water. Rescuing the passengers using rafts took firemen and emergency crews 9 hours to fully offload from the train.

Lac Megantic Derail Takes a Turn for the Worse

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On July 6, a runaway crude oil transporting train derailed in Lac Megantic, Quebec, Canada. Ever since the derail, explosions fueled by the oil have taken the lives of over 50 people in the small town.

The train consisted of 5 locomotives and 72 tanker cars with one car filled with crude oil. The train sat parked 10 kilometers west of Lac Megantic.

While parked, a citizen living in the area was driving when she saw sparks come out of the parked train and smoke spreading through the surrounding air. A locomotive was on fire, and just before midnight of the 5th of July, it was put out and the engine was shut down. The engine shut down later and caused the train to move and roll downhill an hour later, which was caused by the release of air brakes in which the engine shut down may have caused.

The train, travelling at 101 km/h sped down and derailed causing a massive mushroom cloud and intense flames. 2000 residents were evacuated from the town of Lac Megantic.

After being allowed to return to their homes, 200 were left without permanent residences due to this disaster.

San Francisco Plane Disaster with 2 dead and 168 injured

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Boeing 777 aircraft of Asiana Airlines crashed on landing in San Francisco Airport on Saturday, July 6th. 2 passengers were killed and more than 160 were injured out of the 307 on board, including the cabin crew. 49 were in serious condition, but fortunately, 123 were able to walk away without any injuries.

Terrorism was not a cause for this crash.

A massive blackened hole appeared at the top of the fuselage as fire stretched across the top of the aircraft. Investigation shows that the aeroplane had landed tail first, and short of the runway.

The two dead were found to be thrown outside of the plane during the landing with the tail of the plane that was torn off by the impact force.

This flight originated from Shanghai, China, with a stop at Seoul, carrying 61 American citizens, 77 South Koreans, and 141 Chinese.

This was the first fatal aeroplane crash in the United States for 12 years.

Bloodshed in Syria continues

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The fighting in Syria has continued, with the UN now saying that over 100,000 people have died during the 2 year conflict.

Many major cites have seen heavy fighting, with the most recent in Homs, Syria's 3rd largest city. Whole neighbourhoods have been flattened by the fighting, and there are estimated to be over 1.5 million refugees in surrounding countries who have fled the violence.

Western countries have not got involved, except for supplying weapons, even though the statistics are horrific. Unfortunately, there is no end in sight to this awful conflict.

Train derails in Spain

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A train derailed at high speed in North Western Spain on the 24th of July. The death toll has been put at 79 people with more than 140 injured, some seriously.

There have been reports that the train was travelling at twice the speed limit when it entered the curved section of track where it derailed. The driver has been arrested and is suspected of being involved in 79 counts of reckless homicide but has not been formally charged yet.

Fatal Train crash in France

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6 people were killed and more than 20 injured when a train crashed into a station at Bretigny-sur-Orge near Paris in France on the 12th of July.

The train was travelling at 85mph when the 3rd and 4th carriages derailed going over a set of points, in which a bit of metal had come loose, meaning the wheels of the train couldn't travel across the points normally.

In contrast to the train crash in Spain, the driver was praised, as his quick actions prevented the crash from becoming worse, alerting a train travelling in the opposite direction so it didn't hit the derailed train.

Massive unrest in Egypt

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unrest has broken out in Egypt again as protests were held to mark the 1st anniversary of elections on July 1st. The Army gave the President, Mohammed Morsi, 48 hours to meet the public's demands and on July the 3rd, removed him from power and suspended the constitution, saying that he hadn't met these demands.

He is currently in custody and has been charged with "premeditated murder of some prisoners, officers and soldiers" relating to when he and several Muslim Brotherhood leaders were freed during a breakout at a prison in Cairo in January 2011. He is also alleged to have plotted attacks on jails in the uprising that overthrew former President Hosni Mubarak and of conspiring with the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip and has strong links with the Muslim Brotherhood.

There have since been rallies and protests held by supporters of both sides. 100s of people have died in the protests and there are claims that security forces used live rounds against protesters.

The Military has promised fresh elections in 2014.
