Chapter 16

An hour later I knocked on Hailey’s door and waited. I told her not to worry, and that we would all come out of this final battle safely. I also comforted her over the pain that she might see her parent’s grave once more, a terrible reminder of what happened on that dreadful day.

Two days later, we prepared our horses and rode hard to Village Marie. We then found out that the population of the kingdom had not been drastically affected like the ones of the other kingdoms. The worst fates had wiped out entire villages in certain kingdoms. We were glad that no plague cases had been reported for almost 5 weeks now. The plague was over.

We then headed to the inn, called the Prancing Pony. We rented a few rooms and headed to the market to buy some food. The next day we sought to find a rowboat that would meet our standards. Then in the cover of night, we scouted the cliff and found a suitable path that would be safe to climb. Then, we waited another day to get rested before the final fight would begin.

The next day we packed everything we would need for the mission.

The farmer brought his sword, and Hailey and I each brought our Yusvengal weapons, White Light and Dark Vortex. We hiked to bottom of the cliff, and where our row boat was. We then took the rowboat to the bottom of the palace and started to scale the wall. When we reached the top, a great surprise was waiting. Commander Sarinthious was waiting for us at the top of the cliff, with tens of men behind him, swords drawn.

“Well, we finally meet again Jonathan”, Sarinthious said. “I finally have the chance to kill you. I know of the weapons you stole, as well as your knowledge of Yusvengal weapons. Because of this, I challenge you to a duel, just you and me, and our Yusvengal weapons. To make it fair, I’ll only use my Yusvengal sword. What do you say? To see who’s the better swordsman? To see who deserves the throne?”

The farmer and Hailey looked at me with looks that said everything. We all knew the risk. It could be a trap. Or it might be a complete loss on my part, with the Commander being an experienced swordsman who trained specifically for fights like this. But if I didn’t accept, what would happen?

There was no way we could take on Commander Sarinthious’ elite troops. Furthermore, we only had two Yusvengal weapons that could only attack so many people before we went down fighting. There was no way we could climb back down before we were killed by arrows. And if we did make it down, Commander Sarinthious would just wait for us to reach the beach before killing us there. No, the only way to put Hailey on the throne would be to end the fight here. But before I could say anything, the farmer said,”I accept”.

Chapter 17

Before I could say anything, Commander Sarinthious pulled his sword out and jumped at the farmer. And to my horror, he shoved him off the cliff with a swift blow with his sword. At the time, I was frozen with fear. I stood there, unable to move, as time slowed around me. I watch the farmer lose his balance and slowly close his eyes as he fell off the cliff.

Then the anger came.

I screamed in rage and pulled Dark Vortex out. At the same time Commander Sarinthious pulled his Yusvengal sword and an epic duel took place.

I didn’t even need to think, all I knew was that this man killed the farmer, and he was the one I could let my rage out on.

Three years of rage building up. All released with a single intention: avenge the farmer. But it wasn’t an easy fight. Yusvengal user’s don’t die easily. The Yusvengal crystal not only powers the weapon itself, but the user’s strength, and their metabolism as well. I fought as though the world was ending. Blow after blow was dealt to both me and Commander Sarinthious, but then I realized that there was a pattern to his movements.

I parried his blow then rolled behind him and shoved him to his knees. I raised my sword for the killing blow, but then Hailey shouted,”Wait!”.

I froze, and realized that there was nothing between me and avenging the farmer’s death except Hailey. Hailey continued,”Even though he killed my parents, I still don’t want to kill him. He’s still a human and killing him won’t make us any better than him.

“Just put him in the dungeons. It’ll be alright, please Jonathan?”

I heaved, catching my breath, then slowly dropped my sword and said to Commander Sarinthious,”Well it’s over, I’m the better fighter, and you’ll be spending your life behind bars. Forever.”

Commander Sarinthious replied,”I’ll never surrender”, and ran to the edge of the cliff and jumped. I had anticipated his move and ran after him and caught his leg, held him there. One hand holding his leg, and one hand holding the cliff. Hailey ran towards me trying to help me up.

“Let go of me”, he shouted,”You’ve won, I’ve lost, but will die remember”.

“No”, I replied,”You’re going to pay for Hailey’s parents, and everyone else you’ve killed. A lot of people are gonna want to see you, humiliated”.

“Never!”, he shouted. And with a swift move he unsheathed his blade for the final time and cut my hand off with a swift blow. I screamed in agony and in my pain, let go of the cliff and started to fall. But just as I was about to fall forever, Hailey grabbed my hand. The soldiers behind her helped me up as well. This didn’t make any sense to me, but before I could ask, I went unconscious.

Chapter 18

I woke up in a royal room. With a maid sitting besides me. My arm was bandaged, but the pain was gone.

The maid said,”Hello sir, my name is Morgan, and I’ll be assisting you until you get better”. A lot has happened since you’ve been out. I’m going to get Queen Hailey, I’ll be right back”.

Queen? Perhaps this was just a dream. I layed back down, wanting to go back to sleep, but then Hailey entered the room and said,”You’re up”, with a smile. “I’m sorry about the farmer, we never found his body."

“But as for you, well, you’re now my second in command. Commander Sarinthious apparently had the entire royalty drugged using his Yusvengal helmet. But when he killed himself, the helmet’s power faded. You’re Dark Vortex is in the armory, I’ll have it brought to you when you feel better. But for now it’s safe”.

I took this all very suddenly, but asked,”What about you, how did you become Queen?”

“Well, you’ve been out for almost 3 days now. When Commander Sarinthious died, the soilders also woke up and realized that I was the true Queen. They brought me to the rest of the royalty and they all agreed that I was the true Queen. I’m just about to make a speech to the rest of the kingdom, how Commander Sarinthious is dead, and how you saved me. As for the farmer, remember when he asked to see me in private?”

I nodded, speechless, and dreading what she would say.

“Well, it turns out that he foresaw his future, and knew that he was going to be killed. But he was worried that if he told you, you would end up killing yourself trying to save him. So he told me to never tell you until he was dead, but he told me to give you this letter. I’ll let you read it in private since he was like a father to you.”

I wiped a tear from my eye and nodded. I opened the letter and read.

Chapter 19

Jonathan, ever since I found you in the village of Nardeen, I knew you were special. I took you in, and taught you how to farm, how to work, how to live. Your parents left you, I found you in an alley and decided to raise you. I never told you who you were as I never found out. Years of searching and yet I never found your true parents. I deeply apologize for this, because if you’re reading this, it means that I’ve passed away, and that I never found your true parents.

However, please, take care of Hailey. Just as you’ve been through the pain of growing without knowing you’re parents, Hailey is feeling the same pain. Bear with her, and watch over her. Hopefully by the time you’re reading this, she is the true Queen. Make sure she is a good queen, a queen that always watches for her people, and a queen that puts her life between the dangers of this world, and the citizens of her kingdom.

We’ve worked so hard on the Ghost, you and me, take care of it, and when the next disaster comes, use it wisely. Life is precious, as you know. You lived through one of the greatest plagues of mankind, and yet you survived even though so many were horribly killed.

The only explanation for this is that you’re immune. You’re special. It’s the same with Hailey, the same with everyone who survived the plague. Except me. I knew I was dying every since we found Hailey. I must’ve caught the plague somewhere along the way, so I saw a doctor in secret, without you knowing. He said there was no way that I could be cured, and he recommended me to a seer. The seer said that I would die on the day that I died. There was no stopping it, but I could choose how I died. So I chose to die of free will. I’m sure however I died, I could’ve prevented it, but instead, I chose to let myself die. I’ll be watching you Jonathan, from the stars, forever.

This is where we part. This is where my journey ends, and where yours begins. Will you let your actions define you? Who will you be Jonathan? The choice is yours. Goodbye.

From, the farmer.

Nathan Halist

Chapter 20

And so, this is where the book ends. This is Jonathan, and with Hailey sitting besides me, helping me recall the events of the past years. I’m now 24, Hailey 20. She successfully united her Kingdom into a powerful. She married a powerful king, another hero’s story.

As for me, I recovered from my wounds, but my swordsmanship was never the same, due to my hand. Although I didn’t lose my primary hand, nobody wanted to fight a man without a hand. As Hailey sits besides me, as I finish this recollection of the powerful events that changed both of us. I don’t know what I’ll do.

One thing is for sure, I will leave, journey across the Sea of the Lost and make new adventures there. I hope to find the missing Yusvengal weapons and keep them safe, so that they don’t fall in the hands of another evil being.

I will encase this story deep underground, with Hailey’s help. Perhaps, if someone finds this in the future, he will not only remember my deeds, but Hailey’s as well as the farmers as well as everyone else’s. The cost is high for a man’s deeds. You can’t take them back, but you can affect the consequences.

Tomorrow, I will leave for the land across the Endless Sea. Where journeys await. Where answers await. Hailey will stay at Castle Ebro, watching her people, as a good queen should. Will I return? The answer weighs heavy. I want to see Hailey again, but I also want to complete and impossible task. But nevertheless, this story will be kept safe, I hope. To the reader who finds it, be safe, for knowledge is power.

This is Jonathan, ending the story. Except that it’s not the end, but the beginning of a new era.

Author’s Note

Writing Immune was a wonderful period of time. It was a place where I could free my thoughts, a place where I could write a fictional world, where anything could happen. Characters like Jonathan (my real name is indeed Jonathan) were based off how I would like to be. How I want to change. While characters like Commander Sarinthious were based off the worldly ways.

But in the end, my final note goes to you readers, the ones who never cease to click “Amateur’s Writers Section” to see if my next chapter has gone up.

Files have been translated.

Facts are 85 percent accurate.

Approved.

Edits:

- 1 typo

- Altered two sentences that didn't make sense.

- 2 punctuation errors corrected.

- "Your parents" not "you're parents".

Good job. A nice ending to a very entertaining series. This final part was well-written except for one part. "The seer said that I would die on the day that I died" almost undermined the serious and emotional nature of the letter because after all, everyone dies on the day that you die :P

I like the LOTR reference (Prancing Pony). Do not use dialect like "wanna" as it brings down the overall "feel" of your piece.

Regardless, you are getting better and better. Looking forward to future articles!

Took me 2 hours to read from chapter 1 to the end.

A breathtaking story, I truly believe this should be published

Great work, I look forward to seeing another article soon.
