Story [Issue 17] The Base: Dictator's graffiti manual
GoldRock replied to Ilia.ArchangeI in Newspaper Archive
I don't really see the issue with the little line of red text, which is obviously there to joke about the article as a whole - I used a similar foreword for my own Behind the Breaking News series. On the contrary, that made it obvious that the article was good-natured, and not intentionally offensive, to me. Though Arch could do with adding that the article isn't meant to be offensive in any way to the red text, just to make that fact clear. -
Yes, I agree with everything you've said. However: Was such a comment really that helpful? I get what you're saying about criticism not needing to be sugarcoated, but it should be generally polite, too.

Leave the Maths to me, then :P
-
Actually, Freeze and Fire would still damage him, even though their special effects have been rendered useless. And you Maths is just a lot of random guesswork. 50 Twins shots = 150 Thunder shots = 150 Smoky shots = 4 Smoky crits? As I said, you've just guessed, because a Thunder shot doesn't do the same damage as a Smoky one, and a single Twins plasma ball doesn't do more damage than a Thunder shot. And 1 crit is equal to about 7 or 8 Smoky shots, actually.

93% would still be too high. I would guess at around 66%. This'd mean that six attackers (the x2 in the following calculation representing the Double Armour being used: (100%/33%)x2 - would deal the same damage as one normally would. Considering he's using Mammoth M3 (Double Armour has been accounted for), and First Aids are being used, that seems about right. In such a situation, (100/10)x2 = 18 tanks would have to attack him simultaneously to do the same damage that one normally would to a tank without Double Armour. Which is clearly nonsensical.

We've seen that vid already, but thanks anyway. And the protections can't feasibly be 98%; otherwise, he would literally never die, considering he's drugging, too. Anyway, this should be part of the topic created purposely to discuss this matter.

In some points, you're correct. However, this bit: "He's also going around insulting others for no reason - you don't even need to provoke him." ...reminds me more of how certain people are treating him on the forums, than it does of his own character. How is calling him a fatty (considering his size is something he confided in us about in order to receive advice) going to help him contructively improve in any way? I don't think telling him that he's arrogant will either... You've told him what he's done wrong, so there's really no reason to continue to criticise him, whether he has accepted your advice or not. Criticism needs to be constructive, not destructive. (EDIT) Wow, it's finally happened - me versus Remaine in a debate scenario. I wonder how this'll turn out? :P

Story [Issue 17] Birth of a Tank - Part 2: "Rachel"
GoldRock replied to Fjelstad1678 in Newspaper Archive
Now that is mind-blowingly good. Love how you've switched from the descriptive imagery in the first part to emotive language and dialogue in the second in order to develop the plot, great idea :o -
 I'm going to leave you guys to continue messing this thread up now, I don't wish to play any part in this ^_^

Story [Issue 17] The Base: Dictator's graffiti manual

Well then it wouldn't have beem funny whatsoever... The comparison is what gives this article its humour. I think it's an issue of offending people here. What Arch has done is OK, but if I was him, I'd have checked with some players if they were fine with being made fun of in such a way. I'm sure Arch's intentions here are good-natured i.e. not intended to offend or upset at all, but it's always best to get permission from players if what you write about them could be taken offensively. -
^Agreed. So what would the sensible thing to do have been? Either to have written an article or two in advance, or failing that, to not have published anything at all. Though to be fair, 75% of my articles were written on the last day  The difference is, I had time to spend on mine, whereas here, Music has apparently had to rush it through a little. It was not absolutely essential for him to have an article published... First hithere, now Music - both reporters got off to a bad start simply because articles have been rushed through to publishing, even though both are very good writers. I thought the newspaper team had all agreed on hog's idea that rushed-through, below-standard articles should be denied publishing, until they were proofread/reworked in some way, and so up to scratch? This would've been a near-perfect issue otherwise.

You're most welcome ^_^ I unfortunately have to agree with you, with every word you've said. I was almost glad to get my own series finished, because it seemed it was a waste of time and energy to write it - very few people actually seemed to want to read it, let alone appreciate it. You're lucky, your school newspaper sounds decent... I was head of the 'student-run' committee that started ours up, but it turned out that a teacher, who was really the behind-the-scenes dictator of it all, wouldn't let us publish anything half-interesting. Once we started featuring the history of the school library, I just had to resign  Anyway, no-one reads ours anymore, and the students who write for it are the sort of people who like to be told what an amazing job they're doing by teachers, since the good writers and designers all resigned after a while. Getting back to the issue you raised, it's actually quite surprising to find such a lack of interest in intelligent, literary reading within this community. You'd think that there'd be at least be five players here who'd regularly share their thoughts on the stories and other articles inside the newspaper issues, but apparently not. And ironically, the people on the forums are generally the more intelligent, active, and mature players of this game, too... :/

Well, you guys need to back off a little, IMO. Though he clearly has his faults, too.

Yes It seems like the flea...

An excellent story, which I think sets a great example of how a story should be written properly. I really like how you've used descriptive imagery to create an image in the reader's mind of the character's surroundings and their emotions. The plot develops steadily throughout, it's well structured and extremely well paced. Faultless grammar, the ways in which it started and ended were original, effective, and clearly thought through. If I had one possible improvement, that would be to spread out the dialogue a little more, since long dialogues can put off the average reader. However, I was pleased to find that I certainly wasn't put off; the dialogue was well maintained, with excellent choices of verbs (it's good you didn't just write 'said xyz' over and over, for example), with the content of the dialogue being more emotionally engaging, and thankfully, not mechanical in nature. The way you've incorporated that picture into the story, which I must say looks pretty visually stunning, is pretty much like the icing on the cake. In summary: one word: Extraordinary. Stories aren't generally appreciated as much by the average reader on this forum, so don't be annoyed when you get comments like that one. Not everyone can be bothered to be a critical reader. Anyway, my appreciation is in this post - I think this article has shown that you obviously deserve it :P I guess it's your decision in the end, but I for one really want you to keep sharing your talent for writing stories.
-
Mhmm, that wasn't so good. Though the general standard of the articles this issue was excellent, great job!
-
I think that's false actually, you basically need to copy and paste the quotes you want each time when on the mobile version. Unless you could PM me to explain how that works? It would be much appreciated ^_^ _____________ Sorry for going off-topic, back on-topic then.
-
Yes. I admit it.
-
Thought not, but I had to try, just so it doesn't look like I'm actually conversing down at the level of you trolls ^_^
-
How can you look down at me when you're a midgety flea? :P ___________________ Are we going to stop going off-topic any time soon...?

Hmm, being a former reporter I know that's no excuse; you guys have a month. If you don't have the time to write a good quality article, then don't. Better no article than a poor or mediocre one, otherwise the general quality of the newspaper will be impacted. If in doubt, or running out of time, then just don't publish. But I've been impressed with the standard of the vast majority of the articles this issue, well done. You're welcome, and I hope that will be the case ^_^
