They went to the comet to study its elemental properties as earth is probably made up from comets collisions, most comets are ice and a bit of cosmic dust and its thought that the ice from comets gave us our water here. This comet has probably been traveling for 10 to 13 billion years though the universe so it may give us some clues as to our own origins thought the chemical make up of the stuff its made from.
