    [Issue 76]

Can we just end this discussion? I realize that I propelled some of it, but it is also important to realize that we are not going to be getting anything else out of this conversation due to differences in opinions. While constructive criticism is always important, and it makes Reporters, AWS writers, and other tankers better, we also need to learn when it has gone on too long, and the only thing coming out of this discussion is people butting heads. I think Flexoo made good and valid points in defense of the Newspaper (he is the admin after all) and Guido made some good ones as well that boil down to differences in opinion that I think we all got a bit to riled up on. I propose that the discussion on this particular topic can be concluded and we can enjoy the different parts of the paper that we enjoy and have a place to give feedback that won't turn into a war of different opinions that will never be resolved.

It isn't the criticism that I mind, though I don't know how clear I made that, but that you are calling something that requires a lot of effort to write lazy. I understand where you are coming from, but I disagree with the idea they are lazy.

They aren't lying, what is the benefit from that. They rate it highly because that is a combination that they like to use. I said it before, and I will say it again, you don't need to like every article in the paper, but we want to keep it varied for everyone, and some people enjoy reading these reviews. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean that it is bad.
  4. Is amk an evolution of mk? In case any of you came here in the past year and a half, I created mk and all the writers have taken it because people think I am cool and I don't need this guide. On a more serious note, while I appreciate the sense of humor you have, I know that you can do better satire. Remember, the goal of satire isn't to be obviously satirical at first, but rely more on wit than strikeouts and obvious fake facts. Obviously, however, there is a certain line that we must pay careful attention to, lest we make satire easier to understand, which would, in affect, remove the strength of satire in our arguments as it would only cause discord if everyone understood the satire that is, in fact, being used, preferably without others noticing, which you yourself mentioned. It is also important to take into account that the other goal of satire is indeed to trick them, as it can really only be through the profuse failings of others trying to understand satire that it is highlights the much more subtle messaging that is the requirement to trick people and thus making it more amusing. It is only through the use of repeated, if slightly uncommon, strategies that we must, in fact, reiterate the importance of being intelligent without being smart, and only once said work is done, and it has been proven to work, will satire here work and it will make out points even stronger. Think about that.

Sorta a follow up on what KG said, but reviews are hard, and kit reviews may actually be the hardest, for exactly the reason you said. It is hard to bring something new to the table when writing guides, trust me, I have done my fair share of them, but that isn't a reason to say that it is lazy with no creativity, because guides are the hardest to write and they need to come from an expert. A year or so ago, in the AWS, kit reviews were everywhere and they started to become stagnant, as people didn't actually have a firm handle on the information: theory-crafting can only take you so far. They died because they were becoming too common. In this issue, while it might be a bit dry, LKTTD (I'm lazy) put in a huge amount of work with a lot of research and it exuded experience on a kit that he has enjoyed using. While it might not be your cup of tea, others enjoy them and they can prove very handy if anyone is thinking about buying them in the future.
  6. As a past Reporter and AWS helper, I feel equipped to answer all your questions. This is a change to AWS, but not a major one; in the past, it was articles of outstanding quality that sometimes got the nod to go into the paper, but it was not a fundamental part of AWS until now. I can also guarantee that this is not designed to make you feel bad about not getting in. I have known Flexnug since he was here in AWS, and I know all the other current reporters, none want you to feel bad about your writings, but instead, we want to push you to become a better writer. Finally, your point of AWS going down in quality. We have had 12 people from the AWS section go onto becoming Reporters/ Wiki Editors, and the AWS is still going strong because there is always new talent coming in that will begin to rise to the top. In fact, I'd even go as far as to say that the quality could go up, because people will be striving to hit the standards to be in the newspaper (and getting the crystal reward), and want to surpass it, forcing the overall quality to increase. As it is, the Reporter standards are very high, and there are many great articles that will still fall short of the bar, but that is what keeps this section alive. You should be completely fine, while I was an AWS helper, we had articles in french and we got other reporters or community members who speak french to edit those.
  7. Have you been multing around again? Bad reporter, bad
  8. The implosion of TWG truly was a sight to behold. After about a dozen crappy "Ultimate Guide" knock-offs, and me essentially being away that entire weekend, I came back to pages upon pages of self-immolation that I was thankfully not the leader at that time to deal with. What started out as a good group of writers - many of us actually did become reporters - became a grab bag of people who couldn't really write and had bad leadership. At least AWC was formed, a lot of good comes from that. Did I mention that I am hurt you didn't mention me ;(, because I am, and always remember, I BEAT you. Btw, congrats on becoming a reporter.

    Constellations

They do, if they have a similar caliber to when I was there, they definitely do have great proofreaders.
  10. As a former ~mult~ helper, I can definitely attest to this, at least at a reporter level. I failed three times at reporter, twice for forum mod, and left a wiki editor by choice, and the importance of being resolved on one is important. After focusing on writing for a while, I improved enough to join as a Reporter, and I feel if I had focused on helping others in other areas of the forum, I might have been able to become a forum mod (maybe ;)). I can state for a fact that we can tell if you are lying or only in it for status, prestige, whatever you want to call it. For reporters, it was evident in writings and past interactions if they were in the AWC or through battles. And honestly, the compensation isn't really as great as it seems, at least while I was a reporter. You'll get some people admiring you in battle chat and others who asked how much you spent irl to get a fancy reporter paint (which, by the way, is absolutely hilarious). If you want to be a helper for any reason other than helping (get it, it's in the name), don't even bother. Most probably will fail, and I know of others who have achieved it and then found out that the work wasn't worth the status. Props to 'ole Flexy for making it abundantly clear.

    A guide to Monte Carlo

I second twee's points, you really do repeat ideas and tactics a lot. I feel like you add images for no reason other than to say you have pictures. Try using a basic online photo editor and just use the paint tool that they all have, it'll do you good. Also, attack, walls, defense, etc don't need quotations, they are commonly used terms that are widely accepted as the definitions you used them for. A smaller point, but your intro should not be "Here is a guide to Monte Carlo".

Wait... You only just left Now?

I know, big surprise. You haven't seen me around in a while, most of Y'all thought I probably already left. Well, kinda. I was blocked from TO, became unblocked, hoped to make a majestic return, and then realized that it didn't have the same appeal. Mostly, I just wrote this so you won't expect me to write anymore "Science Behind" articles, 'cause I won't be around. I'll try to keep this short. Been around for about 3ish years. Found out about Forum via Newspaper, started writing. Was with multiple writing projects, did random stuff. Joined the AWC which lead me to being a Reporter. Had a ton of fun as a Reporter and will definitely miss it the most out of all the things I did here. Keep on reading and writing guys, TO wouldn't be the same without Writers and Readers. To summarize: TO was fun while I played, I didn't leave the game because of updates, give the new CM all the support they need and don't compare them to past CMs. I've had a great time as a reporter and hopefully as a friend. So see Y'all around on skype (rarely) and discord (mostly). If you don't have either, I probably didn't get to know you well enough to give you it, don't take offense. Treat your helpers with respect and they'll help you, trust me, it goes two ways. And finally: a shameless plug. If you want to see me, Goldy, NS, and other past/ present reporters check out the Reperceived Project that Goldy and NS started up this summer. Have a great life ahead of you and have fun. What is your empathy quotient (EQ)?

20, and I can tell you I don't have a mental disorder, I also don't think that they're right. I prefer to stay detached, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Edits: Couple typos - taking into account I didn't change differences between US and UK English Quite a few comma splices Overall: An enjoyable, if somewhat disturbing article. Flabbadoom once again fails to disappoint.
  16. Perhaps a bit Viking biased, but overall, good article. Also, was there supposed to be an adaptable section?
