[Issue 18] [Guide] Mastering your Tanki Keyboard

It sounds easy, right? Just drive and shoot! However, controlling your tank and all of its assets come in many different shapes and forms, and the amount of things you can do with your Tanki keyboard is not to be under-estimated! I hope that, after reading this article, you will have a planned precision in your tank, turret and camera controls! The Introduction Even as I begun writing and preparing this article for you guys to read, I suddenly realised how little I, a committed Tanki player for over 3 years, actually knew and had considered about controlling my tank effectively. I'm sure many of you readers will have not had the same level of 3-years experience I have had, so unless I have a complete lack of brain cells, there must be a fair amount of information out there that you can find useful too! This article will mainly address two different things about mastering your Tanki keyboard. Firstly, you will be shown the different options for turret, tank and camera controls, and secondly, I will try to give some tips out on each of the controls. Finally, I will rate my three best Tanki tank-turret-camera combinations to use! Before I start, I would like to state that this article addresses the QWERTY keyboard. If any of you reading have a differently-ordered keyboard, please feel free to speed-read and just read tips, or different options and make your mind up for yourself. I'm sorry that I cant accommodate for you in this article. I guess that's one of the problems with all these different keyboards! To start, lets get stuck in to the most important part in your Tanki game play - the tank itself. The first part of your Tanki keyboard, and the most obvious is controlling your tank. Now, you're probably thinking: what am I doing bringing this up in an article? Isn't it the most obvious thing in the world? Even recruits know how to drive their tank! However, mastering the control when driving your tank is something that requires practise. As promised, I'm going to split up each of these sections into two points. Im going to call them “Options of Control” and then “Tips”. The first section will address the different options of control that are offered on the Tanki keyboard, and the second will hopefully give you some tips on how to best master each of these arenas of Tanki control. Options of Control As you can see by the picture above, on a normal keyboard, there are two ways to control the movement of your tank. You can either use the W-A-S-D as controls, or use Arrow Keys. The mainstream way is to use the arrow keys. However, many hardcore gamers claim that WASD is the only proper way to control. Let's first size up each of the options. In the end, its your decision to make on what controls to use. Arrow Keys I'm sure that, at least at one point in all of our Tanki histories, if not at the moment, we have used the arrows keys. The Tanki set-up, as it is, is created with arrow keys as the primary way of movement with a tank. Its simple - the Up arrow drives you forward, the Down arrow drives you backward, and I'm pretty sure you can guess where the left and right arrows drive you. (If not, I would contact a psychiatrist). Another reason people use this is that its easy and suitable for right-handed gamers (of which most of us are part). Having the arrows on the right, which are more primarily important to master than the turret turning on the left, means that a quick focus is developed on mastering the arrow keys. But after talking to a lot of people, there is one main reason why people use the arrow keys now. It is, quite simply, a habit. For many of us Tanki players who have been gaming for a good while, the habit of using the arrow keys has grown in. I'm gonna give you my personal example here, which I'm sure fits in with many of you. I actually didn't play any MMOGs which only used the keyboard before I started playing Tanki (probably because Tanki was my first MMOG but anywaaaaaaaay), and so the keyboard was something I needed to master. Arrow keys were the sensible option for me, a young 11-year-old wannabe gamer, to start playing with. Tanki told me to use them, and so I used them. In fact, I didn't actually consider changing my gaming style until about 1 year ago, a good 2 years after I had begun playing Tanki. But by then, it required too much effort for me to even consider changing, let alone try it out. It all seemed so confusing for me to have to use my left hand to drive my tank around (unless of course, I crossed my hands when playing to use W-A-S-D with my right hand!) Looking back over many forum topics, and hearing many opinions on the matter, I have concluded that at the very least, 97% of Tanki players above the rank of Warrant Officer One use the Arrow Keys to control their tank. Its popular, simple, and easy to use. However, is it the best option...? W-A-S-D Keys As the slogan goes, and as AdvocatusDiaboli, a very fervent supporter of WASD in Tanki, would remind us: "Real gamers use keys". However, is this useful for Tanki? Because of Tanki not using mouse in any ways, gamers who normally use WASD in left hand, and mouse in the right hand, change their approach. However, it is a well-known fact that WASD is the proper "gaming" way to control your tank. But does it work? Firstly, let's cut to the chase and state what you might not find obvious, but what is very true. A lot of Tanki players use WASD. Yes, believe it or not, they do. Now, WASD is a method that requires a lot of work to master, but once mastered, I would say is definitely stronger than arrow keys. As the old phrase goes, "Practise makes Perfect." If you are unsatisfied with your current use of arrow keys (which isn't perfect, particularly when you want to use camera controls), it would be a great idea to try out WASD. Yes, I know, the first time you do it, people would probably look at you as if "you're a tank running on vodka", to quote Irontank. However, it could pay off dividends. It would be especially useful if you have a natural tendency for being left-handed, as WASD would suit your left-hand driving style rather than your right-hand. In the end, which is better though? Well, though you may not want to hear this, it does in the end all come down to the player! The two options are given so that if someone is dissatisfied with one method, the other one is on offer! I'm sure most of you reading try arrow keys. Perhaps now might be a good time to try out WASD, and see what you can do! But before we make that decision, it might be wise to look below and continue your thoughts by looking at the different options for not only tank controlling, but also camera and turret too. What is the best combination? Well, that's your decision to make. But as long as it doesn't involve you being unable to hit the space bar without being able to control both arrows and turret, then it could be a good option. Tips So tips on driving? You're having a laugh. However, driving your tank is not to be looked over, just because it is so simple. Let me just run through a couple of tips for you to read and take heed of, at the very least: Starting with the beginner tips, and most obviously, when driving your tank, you need to be able to smoothly drive whilst holding down two keys at once. There's no point driving forwards, turning right, then driving forwards. This might be the most obvious thing ever written in the newspaper, but to actually play to a decent level, you need to master the art of driving whilst holding two keys down at once. Yes, what an incredible revelation. But its important to remember. Turning the tank around is an important thing to master as a tank driver. Its often much quicker to drive backwards from places, rather than forwards - and so don't be afraid to be "driving backwards"! Turning your turret round will help you to be almost as if you are "driving forwards". This is useful for scenarios when you grab the enemy flag and re-track your own route - you can simply press backwards rather than turning around, and spin your turret while driving to save time! Another important thing to note is that you have to try and show as little as your hull to the enemies. Since your turret is located near the BACK of the hull, its often a good idea for a sniper to pop out on the back of his tank, rather than his front. This gives much less exposure to enemy attack. Once you learn to have control of your tank, you will be able to shoot while moving, and gain the necessary control for shooting and looking in a direction you aren't driving, a very useful technique to master. This is a great skill to learn, but it only can be used once you have mastered driving your tank. Controlling your tank goes right in hand with controlling your turret. And so... Once you learn control of the turret and the tank, you're well on your way to mastering your keyboard. The turret is something that takes much longer than the tank to master - mainly because you don't actually NEED to turn it! Many beginners work their way even up to the Warrant Officer ranks without having even turned their turret once. But, they wouldn't believe the difference it makes when you master turning your turret - particularly whilst moving. Options for Control Just like the tank itself, the turret has two options of use. These are the keys: "Z,X,C and ,./". ZXC is the recommended combination Tanki suggest when you join the game. It is also, by an absolute mile, the more popular of the two. However, lets explore each of them, like we did with the tank controls. Z-X-C Keys The ZXC Keys and Arrow Keys are 100% the most popular combination in controlling your Tanki game. They are easy to master, spread apart with the space bar in between, and perfectly fit for the mainstream fingers in the hand. In contrast to Arrow Keys, though, very few people have actually considered changing from ZXC to another set of controls - particularly with the Qwerty Keyboard. Its perfectly balanced with Arrow Keys and space bar, and easy controls - but the problem comes when using camera controls. However, that's for the next subject. To be honest, this section should probably be called the Z-X keys. Once you become half-decently experienced in Tanki, the C Button becomes dead to you. This is because its role is no longer useful - you can turn your turret the direction C would and as far as you would like in just as smooth way as previously. Once again, this demands a level of mastering the turret. However, there is a twist in this. Some people have been known to ignore one of Z and X, and use Z and C or X and C. This is because they are using WASD which means that using Z and X is too cramped. Yes, I know this sounds absolute crazy, but a famous generallisimo has played like this for over three years *cough* AdvocatusDiaboli *cough*. ",./" Keys I'm not sure whether its a sad thing that few players use these controls, because writing the symbols they represent out in an article look so tacky that I'm glad I get to write ZXC more often. However, these are actually rather suitable for left-handed gamers. Using W-A-S-D as the driving controls, and ,./ as the Turret Controls also spreads the hand well over the keyboard, and gives room for other camera controls, just like the Arrow-Keys - ZXC Approach. Though I can't personally see much use in using Arrow Keys with these Turret-changing keys, I certainly see the argument for mastering W-A-S-D and ,./ as your controls. In fact, as I'm writing this, I feel the temptation to try them out in game. So off I go... I'll continue writing in a second... Well, now I'm back, and I see a very strong argument for that combination. However, the camera controls will round off the perfect combination of controls, to see whether it really is worth it... Tips Turret mastering definitely requires tips for perfection. Many people cannot master using their turret well. However, most of it comes hand in hand with the hull control. Let me just bring a couple of points across. Mastering turret control, of course, takes time, and differs with all turrets. But turning your turret should be habitual for you as a gamer. Being able to turn your turret quickly can save you from a deadly freeze, or get a necessary Railgun hit on. Particularly for tanks such as Railgun-Hornet which have high damage long-distance weapons, but light hulls, very good, fast turret turning is an important factor. Turning while driving with the turret is a masterful technique. When driving away with the flag, for example, its a very useful technique to be able to keep spinning your turret to keep aware of all enemies (and team-mates). Now the turrets are crucial, but without working out what camera-control to use, many players are clueless about all the best keyboard controls to use. And believe it or not, but camera controls can often make the difference between life and death, a flag capture and a return, a gold box and a miss. Camera Controls are the deciding factor in many keyboard-formation line-ups. Not only are they really useful to master in battle, but often they are a strain to reach in different keyboard formations. The Camera Controls leave so many players clueless in Tanki. However, rather than having 2 options, they actually have 3 control choices to choose from! Lets look quickly at each of them. Pg Up - Pg Down According to the Tanki Online Tutorial Guide, Pg-Up and Pg-Down are the recommended controls for camera for the beginner. But are they actually useful? I, personally, have used Pg-Up and Pg-Down since the beginning of Tanki. I'm sure you'll want to know my reasoning behind it. Two words. I'm Lazy. Pg-Up and Pg Down, for me, is just the easiest to get your head around. Firstly, it has the words "Up" and "Down" on them. That always helps. Secondly, its just above the arrow keys, and it gives the suggestion of accompanying the tank's movement with the camera angle. And also, I haven't had the care to work into my natural habit of playing a different camera control. Now, Pg-Up and Pg-Down is reasonably popular among the pros, but definitely not the most... Now, I do know that on a lot of keyboards, Pg Up and Pg Down are really hard to reach, up at the top near Prt Screen, so I would rule them out for your use. However, there is another set of camera controls that should be much more near to the hand... Q&E Keys Though not by a mile, Q&E Keys are most certainly the most favourable keys among the higher ranked players. Positioned nicely on the keyboard, near the supplies (which most pros reach for a lot of the time anyway :P), it is a favourite among players. I have always appreciated why people used these keys. The combination of "Arrows, ZX and QE" is certainly the most popular among the high levels. The fingers fit in well, and its comfortable game play. Q&E is what I would recommend to every Arrow Keys player. But lets not forget the dark horse of these camera controls, the hidden one, but maybe it has a place of its own right too... [ & ] Keys Before I start, I have a confession to make. As I begun to write this article, I went looking through forum topics, and I saw someone mention that they liked using [ and ]. I was completely mind-boggled, as I had actually never thought they did anything. I logged onto Tanki and pressed the buttons, and lo and behold, the camera view changed. That was definitely one of the most embarrassing moments I've had in my Tanki career. I cant believe I've been playing for three years, and never knew those buttons actually worked!! What rubbed it in even more was when I asked haider if he knew that they changed the camera, and he said that he used them! Ouch! D: All the same, once I noticed that these keys could actually work, it shed a new light on things for me. I had previously thought that only Pg Up Pg Down & Q&E Keys could be used for camera. With another option, I had some new control methods I could try. And if you just read a bit more below, to see my final deduction on the best keyboard combinations, you'll notice that I've now added a set of controls which uses the [ and ] buttons! Whew, it would have been embarrassing if I published this article without actually knowing [ and ] could work on the keyboard! Tips Now, for some camera view tips. I'll hurry through these, I know this article's getting too long for most of you! Whatever position you use, whether arrows or WASD, whether ZXC or ,./ , You must always, ALWAYS be in a position where you can change your camera comfortably. Below, I'll offer some options where this will work, at least if you have a QWERTY keyboard. Campers particularly require using the camera view a lot, and people who have got the enemy flag in their base and are holding it, whilst team-mates attempt to return. Often, you will be blocked by a house, and require a very high view to see over, and then at the same time, need to see far distances around you. KEEP changing your camera view. It will pay off. Similar technique works with a lot of gold box rushes. Keep adapting your camera as to where you are, so you can see if the gold box is falling from high up, or see if its coming from far away. Once again, KEEP changing. Remember, your camera is not your priority however. Don't stop the tank to change the camera. It would be ideal if you could get so used to changing your camera - you can change camera, change turret, shoot and change tank direction at the same time! Once you do that, I'll be confident you have mastered your Tanki keyboard! The Final Deduction So, its finally time for the final deduction. "Den, Den, DEN!!!!" But, before I start this, I would just say, once again, that these work with the QWERTY keyboard. Have a different keyboard order, and most probably, other combinations would be optimal. Also, these suggested are rather simple combinations used. A certain player by the name of AdvocatusDiaboli, and other crazy people like joostcool (picture of his hand arrangement here) use random keyboard controls like W-A-S-D, Q&E ZXC and Spacebar! Now, that's one serious scrunch. Actually, I'll correct that - Z and C. Yep, I said that right. Advocatus doesn't use X. He doesn't turn his turret right at any point!!!!!! Its always just centering. And well, if that works for you, fabulous. But most of us normal Tanki players cant do incredibly crazy controls like that. So... here we go. So, in Number 3, the 3rd best combination in my opinion is.... Yes, this is my current combination, but I still put it in Number 3! Though very simple, the main problem for me is the fact you have to keep moving the fourth finger on your Right Hand, up from Page Up and Page Down, down to the Right Arrow. That is a real pain. However, its simple, nice and it works if you have nimble fingers! So, I'll quickly say what fingers where, to help you know. Left Hand Fifth (Little) Finger - Free Fourth Finger - Z Third (Middle) Finger - X Second (Index) Finger - C Thumb - Space bar Right Hand Thumb - Free Second (Index) Finger - Left Arrow Third (Middle) Finger - Up Arrow/Down Arrow Fourth Finger - Right Arrow/Page Up/Page Down [Quick Movements Needed] Fifth Finger - Free Now, some people use this combination differently. For example, some can adjust their RH little finger to reach up to Page Up and Page Down. but I can't. I move my fourth finger quickly. If this combination, suits you, great! If not.. there's still two better options IMO! Note: Some QWERTY keyboards have Pg Up and Pg Down right at the top of the keyboard near Prt Screen. That is very hard to use. If that is the case, do NOT use Pg Up and Pg Down, but use Q&E or [&]. This combination is very newly discovered for me, but it seriously works! Let me go through what I would use in my hand once again for you! Its very comfortable too! Left Hand: Fifth (Little) Finger - Free Fourth Finger - A Third (Middle) Finger - W/S Second (Index) Finger - D Thumb - Space bar Right Hand: Thumb - Free/Space bar Second (Index) Finger - , Third (Middle) Finger - . Fourth Finger - [ Fifth (Little) Finger - ] Most of you would never have considered this. But it seriously works. Try it out. If you have the same type of keyboard as me, its also really comfortable. No stretch. Though you don't control the "Center Turret" Button, that should be no problem, if you have a decent level of skill with the turning turret. Top marks for the most famous and most popular combination in Tanki! It has won again! The reason, IMO, that this beat the 2nd position was because of the familiarity it is with players. Most people are used to Arrows. And on almost all QWERTY keyboards, this works. So, once again, here goes the hand. Note: This is my hand position with Q&E. Many of you may do differently. Please tell me what you do if you do differently! This time, I will give two options for the Left Hand Options. Option 1 may feel uncomfortable for some of you, but it is able to carry all of the controls without having to switch control. However, Option 2 is more popular with players, but requires movement, and turret and camera can often not be turned at the same time. Left Hand Option 1: Fifth (Little) Finger - Q Fourth Finger - Z Third (Middle) Finger - X Second (Index) Finger - E Thumb - Space bar Left Hand Option 2: Fifth (Little) Finger - Free Fourth Finger - Z / Q [Requires Movement] Third Finger - X / E [Requires Movement] Second (Index) Finger - C Thumb - Space bar Right Hand Thumb - Free Second (Index) Finger - Left Arrow Third (Middle) Finger - Up/Down Arrows Fourth Finger - Right Arrow Fifth (Little) Finger - Free And that's my final line-up for the BEST combination on my QWERTY keyboard in Tanki. Saying that, I probably will start using this... it looks easier than I originally thought! Now, for you all out there who disagree with my best 3, or have different fingers, or even different line-ups to what I suggested, please write below! I'd be so interested to hear your opinion! Now, finally, I'll finish with all the remaining things you can do on your Tanki keyboard. Most of these aren't important during game play, but sometimes your hand will have to move to them, if needed. So this should be a useful picture for you to remember all the things you can do with your Tanki keyboard! Thanks for reading this REALLY long article, and I seriously hope it helps. ALL feedback appreciated. Feel free to use my pictures elsewhere too. :)

What turret is most similar to your personality

Twins. I have to admit that I do talk a lot... And I do have two different personalities in front of different people...
  3. It looks incredibly difficult.. all those effects and recordings done by one person. Thats why its so epic.

In this essay, I am going to give a brief synopsis on what I learnt about art on the 18th of November. The lesson was led by Aunty Margaret's son, Dominic. The session started with a brief introduction to art. The reason a lot of art has changed through the years is down the influences of the period of time that they were painted. For example, the influence of the political times upon the painting is not to be under-estimated. However, art is most influenced by the popularity of different mediums at the time. Mediums are the different types of paints and ink that are used to express a painting in different ways. The differences between soft paints such as oil paints, and quick-drying “harder” paints such as gouache, cannot be understated, with the use of both creating an incredibly large amount of differences in regards to looks. In addition, the current era of art, post-modernism, has had a large effect on current art. With the new era of art and the impact of movements such as surrealism, the concept of painting from imagination rather than sight has grown much more popular. One of the most important things in art is preparation before a painting. When painting with oil paints, in particular, it was a requirement for there to be a suitable amount of preparation before starting. For example, it is necessary to have the correct base. If you decide to paint oil paints onto paper, the paint will seep through and blur and will have a spoilt texture. A prime-stretched canvas is the perfect material. Other useful assets when painting are an easel and a daylight lamp, which is used to shine colours upon it, to make more natural colours show in painting. Furthermore, there is the necessity of getting the paint right itself. There are ways to perfect an oil painting such as using a wash, and using charcoal as a base to the painting to set up the right background for the paint to settle well. On top of this, another useful technique artists use when painting is something known as “gridding up”. “Gridding up”, as suggested by the terms, grids up the canvas into squares to give a sense of direction in the painting. This is a particularly useful technique when drawing from original pictures. Taking a photo of something, then gridding up it, before using the same-sized grid to size up your painting makes a detailed and precise painting. This helps support the structure of the painting. When the shapes are right And even after finishing the basic set-up, oil paints require the correct dilution for them to be able to be used when painting. After dilution, oil paints are normally mixed together too, and that requires gels such as linseed oil and liquin to give different feels to mixing elements together. Liquin is known for drying faster, which helps mix the elements quicker, but in a less natural way. All in all, preparation before painting is crucial. After preparation is completed, the task of getting ready to paint is next. Of course, painting requires more than just preparation. When painting with oil paints on canvas, it is often hard for you to rest your hand without touching the painting. A tool that can help solve this problem is called a milestick. A milestick is a very useful tool which you balance your hand upon to help stop smudging a painting. Just before painting begins, it is most important to think first of what medium and what brush should be used. Firstly, and most importantly, it is a key part of the painting to choose your medium. The differences between something like oil paints, to pastels, all the way to watercolours, are not to be under-rated at the different sizes of painting and different textures to use for painting require different brushes. In taking in mind the medium, it is also similarly important to take in mind the different brushes. Large paintings often need a brush which can “slap” on the paint to spread it about quicker, while smaller paintings need more intricate detail, which would work better with a sable brush. Despite all the preparation, set-up, and getting the medium and the brush right, the actual painting is definitely the most challenging part of the proccess. Without any skill or any right methods, the preparation would go to waste. In vague terms, there are two main arenas of painting that artists generally follow when starting their painting. These are painting from sight, and painting from imagination. Painting from sight was the most popular technique for a long time in the history of art. Famous artists such as Monet and Da Vinci were painters who painted from sight. However, as I mentioned formerly in this report, the rise of surrealism has largely brought up the idea of painting through imagination. Although painting with oil paints may create the best paintings, there are often reasons to paint with other mediums. For example, people who paint for newspapers or magazines, and have a time limit on their works demand for a medium that dries much quicker than oil paints. Likewise, in our lesson, we were unable to paint with oil paints due to lack of time, so we used a different medium – a pen. While pens are very popular in the writing industry, using pens for art is a technique that demands skill. Since pens cannot be erased, each blot of ink stays on the paper, which forces the artist to make no mistakes. There is another key difference with pens that makes it harder to use than lot of other mediums, like pencil. That difference is the use of shading. Undoubtedly, shading with pencil comes naturally and is very simple, yet with pens, it is not simply a matter of pressing harder on the paper. To get a strong shading difference which looks good on paper demands the use of a method known as crosshatching. Crosshatching uses the idea of crossing lines multiple times to create a darker shade in different parts of the drawing. This is a very useful technique to learn, particularly when drawing with pen. In conclusion, what I learnt in the lesson was that art uses an incredible variety of skills. However, it

I would definitely prefer Hunter. Railgun's primary style is not close combat, and Hunter's balanced speed will enable you to pop out and shoot almost as well as Hornet, as well as neccessary life.
