If you already own an item from BP you don't get any substitution reward unfortunately, so yeah, it is an empty slot essentially. You always have to decide for yourself if the current BP is worth buying, but recently skins have got a comeback to BP as a final step reward if you haven't noticed, so that might be an enticement to buy it in an of itself for some.

The freezing effect is really quite strong now, but I don't buy immunities by principle. It's much more worth it to wait when your preferred immu comes to a battle pass or also you can get a lucky drop from containers from time to time.

What I would see as interesting though, is if the the individual shots would have a slightly different shade of the colour - as in real life, nothing is quite so consistent. Also plasma turrets like rico or twins could have the the brightness of the shots higher when leaving the barrel and then slowly dimming down as they approach their max range.

I believe there are situations where it is better to use a different module instead of armadillo, but they are so sparse and far between that I wouldn´t even bother pondering that decision. And by the way, I don´t have armadillo, so that makes the decision even easier for me I guess ?.

You could already argue the game has become filled with flashy colour and effects (from skins and animated paints to different shot effects) and I don´t think it is a good idea to push it even further. I don´t think a ´´rainbow´´ shooting out your turret would add anything positive to the game experience, as far as the visuals go. Despite what I just said, please share your own opinion ? .

Without going deep in to the numbers, I'd just like to point out the case of railgun. Its crit chance is 50%, so basically you get a better protection from railgun by using armadillo then the railgun module itself. + Protection against crits of the other turrets. That pretty much seals the deal for me. Sure there may be situations where it isn't so beneficial, but generally I think it is very helpful.
