FUN WITH SHAFT MATH - A Word Problem

Recommended Posts

This may or may not be a complaint, but I think there may be some new form of hack/cheat but very hard to prove...

Let's have some fun with math, shall we?

There was a tan Hornet/Freeze combo in a game I was playing.

For the sake of this problem, let's assume it was an M3 Hornet.

Now, let's assume this M3 Hornet/Freeze was at full health with double armor.

By the published specifications, this is 100 armor points for M3 Hornet x2 (double armor) = 200 armor points.

I hit this Hornet DIRECTLY IN THE SIDE with FULL CHARGE IN SCOPE MODE from my M2 Shaft AND had a 2x power nuke.

By the specifications, I delivered 140 x2 damage = 280 total damage.

This Hornet did not explode.

To make things more interesting, the M3 Shaft right next to me, ALSO HIT HIM. (his con trail was red, mine was orange)

I have no way of knowing what the M3 Shaft charge level was, so let's assume he was at lowest charge of 28-32 and NOT in scope mode.

By the totals, together, we delivered at least 280+28 damage points = 308 damage.

THE HORNET STILL DID NOT EXPLODE!

The last time I took a math class, I am pretty sure that 308 > 200. Has something changed since then?

It is not the first time I have seen this.

But in the heat of battle you don't always have time to figure the math, but it just seems strange.

There was also a Hornet/Isida in the same battle that just seemed a little too hard to kill...

Anyone else been seeing this lately? Just curious. :?

LOL!

Yea, thank you Eddy...

That's it! Jade paint! It's tan!

It also costs 15,000 crystals! Probably why I never looked at it closely, since I could never afford to buy it!

My goodness! The most expensive paint I have is Forester which is non-protective.

... but Forester only cost about 100 crystals, and hides me pretty well in the bushes.

Will have to consider some type of protective paint in my upgrade strategy.

Jade paint with 45% protection is pretty significant.

But, does this mean I can deliver 45% less damage, or does he have 45% more armor?

Let's update the numbers and see if it all adds up, shall we?

Ok, so let's review the original problem:

~ In the original problem we made some assumptions:

Target was as an M3 Hornet.

M3 Hornet/Freeze was at full health with double armor.

By the published specifications, this is 100 armor points for M3 Hornet x2 (double armor) = 200 armor points.

(now adding a 45% protection factor to his armor (against me): 200 x 1.45 = 290 armor points)

I hit this Hornet DIRECTLY IN THE SIDE with FULL CHARGE IN SCOPE MODE from my M2 Shaft AND had a 2x power nuke.

By the specifications, I delivered 140 x2 damage = 280 total damage.

280 < 290 = Hornet gets to live. I cannot explain my teammates M3 Shaft shot... he must have missed???

However, I do not believe this is the correct way to calculate the discounted damage...

I think the following is the correct way to calculate the effect of Jade Paint:

Let's see if the numbers work out if I discount my damage effectiveness, since if say, a Twin or Rico pounded him and his Jade paint, he would still only be worth 200 armor points (using double armor)

since Jade is only effective against Shaft and Rail. Any other weapons (except Rail) would do their normal amount of damage.

So, I had a 280 payload cocked, locked, and ready to rock, but now I would only be at 55% 'normal effectiveness' against his paint, so I delivered only 154 damage against his 200 point armor.

280 x 0.55 = 154 -- 154 < 200 = Hornet gets to live. (still assuming my team mate missed)

So, now what if my teammate did, in fact land a direct hit (albeit a low power shot)?

Before we assumed 308 points combined damage, but since team mate also had a Shaft vs. Hornet's Jade paint, together, we still are only 55% of our full power.

308 x 0.55 = 169.4 -- 169.4 < 200 = Hornet gets to live.

OK, so I admit I was not correct. However, in my defense, I DID preface my post with the statement that I was not sure what was going on.

I also was not blaming or whining... just questioning an odd phenomenon.

With all of the real hacking and cheating I have seen in the last 6 months, it isn't hard to jump to conclusions.

It has gotten better I must say... lately, I only see a few flag hackers once in a while.

It's also nice to find out there was nothing foul going on! I lost to Mr. Hornet fair and square.

Still think he/she is crazy for wasting 15000 crystals on paint. They were 3/4 of the way to getting an M3 Shaft!

Next time I encounter him, I will just shoot 4 or 5 times.

So, Thank you Eddy. As the Mythbusters would say... Myth Confirmed! (or at least "plausible"!)

Isn't math fun? See boys and girls? There ARE fun word problems! :D
