So far, they still only fall in there normal spot. There has been talk about making it random. Oh, and the random falling time thing goes for all boxes. (supplies, crystals, goldbox).

but its jst luck now.... i played 9,10 battles whose battle fund crossed 200 tday, but this one was the only in which gold box dropped...

Meaning I have seen many battles where it dose not fall. IMOP = in my opinion
