Tanki is a large and diverse community and links many cultures together, and this is shown in the way people celebrate their holidays and enjoy this time of year, as not everyone celebrates the same things. For instance, Tanki has celebrations at New Year as that is the holiday celebrated in Russia and a large chunk of the tanki community is Russian, so the devs reflect that in the game. To find out what sort of things people do celebrate and what it means to them, I asked some members of the community two questions: "What do you do at this time of year?" and "What does this season mean to you?".

What do you do at this time of year?

Datie9:
In Holland we have Saint Nicholas, we celebrate that more than Christmas. It actually is the same, but in Holland we enjoy Saint Nicholas the same as other countries enjoy Christmas.
I also celebrate New Year, that's the most amazing event of the year, in my opinion.

SuperNick95:
I am 50% sad 50% happy: sad because it's a very intense period at school and there are many many tests, happy because holidays are coming and I really can't wait for them. this is the time to make the christmas tree, and when you go through the roads of the town you feel good cause it's all lighted and decorated.

Beerme:
I stay at home, spend time with family or go on holiday with family. I celebrate Christmas but that is mainly for the presents :P I also celebrate New Year when it comes and Diwali (A Hindu Festival) but that depends on when it is, this year it was about a month ago. Diwali is the festival of lights, rows of lamps are lit and I spend time with my family. We eat food, including some Indian sweets. We basically welcome the goddess of wealth into our house. It's fun as the house feels really happy.

PistolenPaultje:
In The Netherlands we have sinterklaas(St Nicholas), on the 5th of December, it is for the young children, kinda like santa claus, but he came from Spain, with his companion Zwarte Piet (Black Pete), who carries the presents and goes down the chimney. So, we did that at my parents in law house, and after that we decorate the house for christmas, red stripes on the windows, and sprayed with frosty fake ice with christmas lights in every room.

ShadowVisions:
Here in the USA we celebrate Christmas, and with school out I take the time to hang out with friends and have a nice break to get everything done for the new year. It's a very fun time of the year that everyone looks forward to and is generally a cheery season!

hogree:
Well, I have my birthday just ten days before Christmas, and then the build-up to the main climax of December is stuffed with making Christmas cards, and finishing off school. Christmas time is normally time for spending time off school, and if I'm lucky and get snow, having fun out in the snow. Often visit further family as well round the Christmas period.

BarbaFenner89:
Prepare the christmas tree, organize days for special dinners, may start to buy gifts.. Relax, meet up all my family members... All sorts of christmas-mood activities :D

wertweuri:
I'm Jewish , therefore, I don't celebrate Christmas, however, I do celebrate Hanukkah. This year is was in early December, it lasts for eight days and everyday we light another candle in the Hanukiah. I relax with my friends, sleep till late, play soccer, watch movies, go to dirt rides, it's very nice to have 1 week with out school, having fun with the family in this break...

PARD:
At this time of the year we are preparing for Christmas and New Year. I come from a country that doesn't celebrate Christmas, we only celebrate New Year. In New Year children get their prizes from "Santa" :D just like in Christmas. But because I live in England we have to celebrate Christmas too. So each year we have 2 major winter celebratios and we give each other gifts two times - one in Christmas and one in New Year. Christmas is bringing family and friends to celebrate together, but not for my family. Our tradition is to leave the country and fly somewhere else to celebrate. This Christmas we are going to France and I am sure I will have a good time. And I hope you guys will have a good time as well.

What does this season mean to you?

Datie9:
As a young child I believed the man existed, now I don't 'believe' anymore, but I still celebrate it with friends, it's really enjoyable. Also New Year, I celebrate with fireworks, it has no special meanings, it's just to be with family and friends and have a nice time.

SuperNick95:
It's the time to be happy, time for presents, candies, time that should be spent with parents and kins all together and it's the time to become fat

Beerme:
It's relatively relaxing but it's also a time of changes, happy yet sad as it is the end of the year and you can change you can change stuff. It is the sign of a new beginning, I think you expect new things of the new year and any mistakes or sins you have committed can be put behind you, you can start again in a way. From being a bad person you can change and learn to adapt and become a better human. Also you learn more about yourself as you can reflect on yourself.

PistolenPaultje:
Stress, since my father's birthday is 30-11, I am 2-12 and sinterklaas is 5-12, so busy days. Then working towards Christmas, where i enjoy cooking a meal of 5 or 6 things. And always at home for the end of the year because i live in a old farm with thatch on the roof which easely catches fire...

ShadowVisions:
To me, Christmas and New Years is more than just about the holiday buzz, presents, and figures like Santa. It means a time of giving and caring for others, bringing people together, and having a lot of fun. :)

hogree:
To me, the winter season is mainly to do with time off school, and meeting up with friends + family. Along with that, as a Christian, I celebrate Christmas as Jesus' coming into the world. And dont forget the presents - got to love the presents. Christmas is also time to stock up on money

BarbaFenner89:
Friendship with known and unknown people, ability to be kind to others, ability not to think only about gifts but about meanings and feelings.. (think) This is the season where even who is the most selfish man in the world might change a bit and be kind..

wertweuri:
Its great... I love everything about it

PARD:
This is truly magical season. Christmas and New Year is about being kind to others, being around with people who love you and who you love and having fun. So for me, winter holidays are the best holidays in the year.

So there we have it, lots of different things celebrated by different people, with one thing linking them all, Tanki! It's interesting, a lot of people celebrate Christmas, but in different ways, Dutch people have St Nick earlier in December, people for whom Christmas isn't the main event of this season go away on holiday, others don't celebrate Christmas at all, but have their own festivals. For some people it has religious meanings, for others just time to spend with family and friends and be kind to those they know and don't know. For some it's a bit stressful getting everything ready but for some it is a time to relax and reflect on the past year or to eat lots of food! We have a truly diverse community!
