I say, one gets smart by getting smart themselves, although with the help and influence by others around them such as parents and teachers/peers and so forth. Although something happens when you're born, one might have a higher advantage than some others but nature vs. nurture decides whether you're intelligent or not. Someone getting lucky might also mean that someone was born in a family where education is one of the main goals and therefore is set onto a bright future. I say that intelligence comes in all 4 forms.

Yeah, you're either smart or you're not. Experiences and influence are a factor, but I'm the sole voter for the first option here. If you're not naturally intelligent, you can still work hard to get to the position of someone who may be more naturally gifted than yourself, but that doesn't mean you gain in inherent intelligence. In other words, you don't have to be a genius to outwit a genius, but on the other hand, outwitting a genius doesn't automatically make you a genius. Sorry, but in my opinion, it'd be wishful thinking to suggest that the main factor for intelligence is experience (though of course, education is definitely important) - life isn't fair, deal with it and use your strengths to your advantage. I welcome any counter-arguments ^_^

It is a combination of genes, experience and the influence of people around them that make an individual smart.

In education, the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or challenging situations. In psychology, the term may more specifically denote the ability to apply knowledge to manipulate one's environment or to think abstractly as measured by objective criteria (such as the IQ test). Intelligence is usually thought of as deriving from a combination of inherited characteristics and environmental (developmental and social) factors. The subject remains hotly debated, and many have tried to show that either biology (especially genes) or environment (especially conditions reflecting socioeconomic class) are more or less exclusively responsible for producing differences in intelligence. Particularly contested have been studies purporting to show links between ethnic heritage and intelligence.General intelligence is often said to comprise various specific abilities (verbal ability, ability to apply logic in solving problems, etc.) General mental ability due to the integrative and adaptive functions of the brain that permit complex, unstereotyped, purposive responses to novel or changing situations, involving discrimination, generalization, learning, concept formation, inference, mental manipulation of memories, images, words and abstract symbols, education of relations and correlates, reasoning, and problem solving.

As long as you work hard, you can achieve anything.

^ But being smart/witty/knowledgeable/wise/intelligent are all difference things, and people tend to confuse them.

Yep. For example, wisdom would be greatly influenced by experience, whereas intelligence is often more down to natural ability.

I'd say being smart or witty is natural, but not intelligence. Although I wouldn't be able to describe my definition of intelligence.

Hmm... Possibly there are elements of intelligence which can be described/defined separately? For example, 'practical' intelligence (which could include things like DIY skills) could be intelligence which comes from experience of the world around us, whereas theoretical intelligenxe (which could include the understanding of scientific concepts) might be that which is natural in origin?

Being smart is NOT the same as being intelligent, someone may be intelligent but not very smart.

Could you expand on that with an example, if possible?

I'd say that people are born smart, it's really down to someone's genes in how they'll turn out to be.

I disagree. You can be born stupid but if your parents give you a proper education, suited to your nature, you can become smart over several years of hard work. It's all a matter of whether or not you're dedicated to learning new things.

Not really, you can't become any 'smarter' from a proper education, IMO... Maybe you can become more 'knowledgeable' or 'wiser', but you are as smart as you are, I think.

I don't quite understand your logic. You are saying a 5 year old with little to no education is "smart" as a 35 year old with several PhD's? Maybe I am missing something here. Please explain...

You don't need to have a PhD to be 'smart.' Like he said being knowledgable and wiser are different things as you just know more 'stuff' but being smart just means having a natural talent to work things out quickly, be able to learn quicker than others etc.
