Lets Discuss Martial Arts

 Share

Recommended Posts

I was just talking with some other players about Martial Arts so I decided to make this thread. Please observe all the regular rules and don't break them (like with a Karate Chop)

Tell us your Martial Arts stories, what you study and how you are doing.

I train 2-3 times a week in MMA like the UFC style stuff...I do it more or less to just stay in good shape. I am already past the age most pros retire at so you will not be seeing me in the UFC any time soon

I like Ju-Jitsu, Wrestling, Boxing, Muay Thai and any fighting sport. I have never studied under a belt system but I have been told I am the equivalent of a purple belt in Jitz I do not use a gi though.

You said in the forms its an "imaginary fight" do you ever do any full contact sparing?

BTW the breathing stuff is CRAZY...people have no idea how important it is to breathe right...One of the first times I trained stand up striking the guy training me said "you don't know how to breathe" I said what are you talking about I am breathing. He then said you won't be in a few seconds..LOL.. I like how MA (Martial Arts) teaches you to be efficient with your movements and explosive power.

I used to be a bouncer in bars before I started training MMA, so I thought I was a pretty tough guy because I had been in many physical confrontations and came out on top most of the time...the first day I trained Ju Jitsu I spared with a much smaller opponent and was Tapped out about 5 or 6 times in about 3 minutes. He was not even sweating and I was out back throwing up my lunch (true story) The first days are brutal...LOL

Yh...if you watch carefully in my post...i mention that we do sparring too...i mean full contact sparring...which btw is called "Sanda" it's a chinese boxing style....but you can fight with legs and everything. Also we do QinNa(i hope i spell that right)...which is grapling techniques. And yh Dirt...my Shifu says that proper breathing is one of the most important things in martial arts and not only....There's this thing we do as a routine...we stand face face to each other....(couples) and we start punching our partner's abdominal area 100 times...i remember when i first joined school...i couldn't stand even 20....so my Shifu came and showed the right breathing technique (pretty much letting out the air so that abdominals contract)...before i knew it...i was doint that routine without much effort...now things have gone tougher....we do lot's of body endurance stuff....like long Horse Stances...which trust me...is unbearable.....legs burn as hell! We also do Qi Gong....that is agility exercises....which hurts too! I don't like complaining about those stuff though...cause they make me feel more tougher in my everyday life! So, in the end i'm very gratefull for doing Martial Arts!

Q I have always wanted to know about Bruce Lee :)

was he actually that fast &  if so how did he manage those incredible moves + is it possible to actually fly * not sure what the move is called *

tnxs ^_^

I have read all Bruce Lee's books Venom and his diary notes...which were published later by his daughter. That man was more than obsessed with body perfection. I have tryed to follow his routine many times...but damn....it is difficult...i mean the man was doing 4 exercises for abdominals....4 sets each...which is like doing 400 reps on your abdominal area DAILY! Insane!!! After seeing how difficult what he does is...i respected him more...as a human being and as a martail artist. He is a legend...even after all these years...even after lived for only 33years....he managed to become immortal in such a short time! R.I.P. great Lee Jun Fan. Now'm sad! :(

Talking about Bruce lee. My most favorite martial artists are Kimura and Mas Oyama. Just read about them, they were super humans :O. There story always motivates me but too bad i stopped training since 2 years now :( :(. Now thinking to start again but then i get this feeling that it is waste to go back and start from zero again, don't know what to do.

Yh...Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Tony Jaa, Donnie Yen, Scott Adtkins are the ones that i mostly like to watch...but there are a few more very good martial arts-actors.

I used to train in Jujutsu twice a week for the past 2 years at university. Learnt about different holds, throws, how to break my fall, kicks, punches. We did grappling every training session, which was one of my favourite things. Started training to stay in shape and to learn to defend myself.

I am planning to start training in Aikido as soon as I can.

Was crazy for martial arts since childhood, but didn't had any clubs nearby. 3 years ago saw a new karate club in the same area where i live and was also having 3 months of summer vacation. Decided that im too old for martial arts so will ask my little brother to join and see my dream coming true through him :). Soon after one month i joined him (couldn't hold myself). Then it was all amazing till last last year when studies left no time and my little bro had to leave. I continued struggling but soon the clubs manager created nonsense problem with my sensei and he had to leave the country :(. And since then i got soo dishearted that i stopped training and now im thinking to start all over again, but with different style of art. Hope this time i don't have to leave in middle again. :)

It's never too late to cultivate human body or mind...keep that in mind....my Shifu's Shifu..thus my ShiYE (Grandmaster) is a 34th generation Shaoling Monk who happens to have grown up inside the Shaolin Temple with real Sholin monks (he is half greek...nvm...his history is here if you interested  http://www.chanwushaolin.org.gr/el/shaolin/daskaloi/shimiaodian his monk name is Shi Miao Dian)....so that man....who obviously has lots of wisdom within him..after growing up with so special people....he always said that "We should never put boundaries to ourselves"...so if you like martial arts....just go for it....even if then you give up again....you will still know that you tryed at least...if you don't do it...you will be regreting it for the rest of your life.

Yeah. I hope I can start training soon. I'm curios, do you think you do well on tanki because of your fast reflexes developed through martial arts?

Lol sure though I might beat you at it and that would be bad for your reputation :P

Uhm...well...logically yh...it probably does help....but i think awareness plays bigger part than reflexes...if you are aware of your surroundings, then you don't need superhuman reflexes :)  And don't worry about my reputation (thanks though).

You won't be starting from nothing...you already have a "foundation" I have stopped and restarted many times. You do have to knock the rust off a little but then you are right back on that horse and riding

Well, I take a korean martial art called Hap Ki Do.

I am taught by the highest possible level of black belt- 9th degree.

I don't really have any stories but I did have a rare oppurtunity to witness a 3rd degree testing. The reason it is so rare is because a black belt can test just once every five-seven years. It was hilarious because at one point they gave the testing black belts a twig no bigger than a ruler and the the grand master had them attacked with wooden swords. Later they had to ward off steel knives with their bear hands.:D

Personaly I'm just a noob at this art form but one day hope to become a black belt of some degree.

Glad to see others take interest in this sport because I have met very few that know karate is not the only martial art.
