karate is not the only martial art.

I knew there are many martial arts but what i didn't knew was that karate is a general term under which there are 100s of styles ranging from okinawan karate to japanese karate with different ways of reaching the same goal.

Well, I take a korean martial art called Hap Ki Do.

I am taught by the highest possible level of black belt- 9th degree.

I don't really have any stories but I did have a rare oppurtunity to witness a 3rd degree testing. The reason it is so rare is because a black belt can test just once every five-seven years. It was hilarious because at one point they gave the testing black belts a twig no bigger than a ruler and the the grand master had them attacked with wooden swords. Later they had to ward off steel knives with their bear hands. :D

Personaly I'm just a noob at this art form but one day hope to become a black belt of some degree.

Glad to see others take interest in this sport because I have met very few that know karate is not the only martial art.

Check this out....Hapkido looks a lot like Aikido. Cool art..keep practicing it..looks nice!

And this is a well know Indian Shaolin master(Shifu Shi Yan Du)..he has the same Shifu as my grandmaster   (Shi Heng Jun..you should check his videos out too...cool stuff).

So here Shifu demonstrates forms' applications(Imaginary fight moves). All those moves you see here are actually from formes...a Shaolin practicioner would easily recognize all these moves..it is amazing...cause while you do a form (Imaginary fight)...it is difficult to undertand what are you doing....forms of course are created so that your body learns these moves...so when they get in your "Muscle Memory" they will come out automatically when its needed....of course that requires daily practice..Like learning a biiiig poem :D.In Karate they're called "Kata"..you may have heard that term...generally forms are used in most traditional martial arts. Like Tai-Chi...which is a very popular Kung Fu style...people all over the world do Tai-Chi cause they want to be healthy...they don't realise that those slow moves that they do...are fighting moves....so they're pretty much learning how to fight.  (btw 3:50 LooooL  )  Poor guys taste a bit more pain in last mins when Shifu goes a little bit too agressive. (devil)

Agreed, then we can have Indians with there name of martial art as it all started from India (Bodhidharma). Lets leave it ;)

And what i saw during my training that japanese masters oftenly visit china to learn from chinese masters and know more about the art karate evovled from. That's the good thing about martial art it gets people closer :) no matter what origin.

I tried to learn Karate, was about to get my first belt but i didn't really felt to continue,i stopped doing it.

Got same feeling in first 2 weeks, but when i spend whole one month i started to like it even more. At the end it depends on person if he/she is really passionate about particular art or sport.

@ fataldeath

That Hap Ki Do vid may feature a tenth degree blackbelt. He was the only one because he died before he could pass on his secrets :(

No one will ever be a hapkido tenth degree again

This video always amazes me, and at the same time makes me sad as Judo nowadays don't use internal strength just pure external force

That master has excellent defense. He lets all of them attempt many times before he attacked.

In MMA the Judo style hip throws are commonly called "whizzers". That is where a good "base" is so important in defense from a move like that.

http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMMEqsCt9DCL0i8z6TXMjIw      < I subscibe to this guys Youtube channel. He has excellent instructional and "drill" videos. The drill videos are great because they show a good flow or transition from one move to the next. In Ju Jitsu (as I am sure in all MA) you need to think 4 or 5 moves ahead and know if this happens then..... and so on. You also have to think defense and offense at the same time. Same with Boxing ...be able to hit and not get hit. Sometimes though...you have to eat one to get into position.

Check out this kick. Totally unconventionalal and very creative. I was very impressed

I have seen this one...very cool kick...but the commentator is soo lame " Wooow....did you see that....he run off the wall like a Ninja"

This a great fight scene from "Ong Bok 2"   He starts off just defending then transitions into "Beast Mode" at the end

And that's Tony Jaa....an AMAZING Muay Thai martial artist-actor....have you seen <<The Protector>>??? If no...go watch it.... Awesome movie!

Final fight :D Edited by FatalTank

Btw....Ip Man movies (there are 3)....are the best martial arts movies i have seen after Bruce Lee. It is said that Yip Man was the first Shifu of Bruce Lee...taught him Wing Chun kung fu....so those three movies are kinda the autobiography of Yip Man. Whoever loves martial arts should definitely go look for them...really good movies!!!
