Are swear words being overused in our society?

I personally very rarely swear, but loads of my friends do so all the time in passing conversation... So I guess the answer to your second question would be yes (for the younger generation). In any case, they're just words - it is the idea contructed by society that they are somehow 'taboo' which is what has given them their reputation.

I like to think I don't swear but I do use the word damn, which is considered by some to be a swear word. Also yes people do use swear words even in the wrong context just to look cool.

Interesting 2nd question, I've wondered what makes a swear word a swear word? Why is it that the f word is "bad", but say 'banana' isn't?

It's the society in which we live in that determines what is bad and what is good, and is in general agreement that makes it bad.

I would say because the f word has a very disturbing meaning and bannana is a fruit.

What i have seen among my friends and other people is that the swear word is mostly used to get laughter. If a joke or an insult has swear word it is mostly getting laughs.

Me myself when among my friends use it always
