Most people did not expect WWII either. WW I was supposed to be the war to end all wars. After WW I there were many efforts by the world leaders to prevent any more world wars. The League of Nations was founded, for example, to prevent war. It failed. Most people did not imagine WWII would ever happen. Right up until it happened.

 

In other words, it doesn't matter if we expect it or not, it will come regardless. Some forces are so big that we do not understand them nor can we predict them. We can only survive them. I would say one of the best books on this subject is War and Peace by Tolstoy.

Unless we (the US) start minding our own business, China, Russia, or both, and Arab nations will go to war with us eventually.

 

Unless the US economy collapses first, triggering a global crisis, in which case a different war will be fought - probably Russia vs. China.
