Easter Around the World

Many of us wait for the day where we get to search for Easter eggs, the "Easter bunny", and spend time with our families on "Easter day." Well, that day has come. Some may also call it "Easter Sunday," (which was on the 20th) we take a look at how it was celebrated around the world via our fellow tankmen/tankwomen’s point of view.

These player selected were asked the following questions: What is the holiday called in your country/native language?  How is it celebrated? who celebrates this holiday? Why is it celebrated? Do you personally observe this holiday?

"So, in my country Easter is a very nice holiday and its called "великден" . How its celebrated? Hm, families gather and make lots of food. The food is traditional "козунак" and eggs. Then people knocking eggs. Such is the custom. Um I think the Christians celebrate it ..but I don't know why they do it :D I personally i think is a great holiday and the people need to spend time with their family. And yeah, I celebrate it too :)"  - Vikster207 representing Bulgaria.

"Easter in Canada is called Easter just like in many other Western countries. We celebrate it by having big family meals with foods including Maple baked beans, Cape Breton Scones, and usually an Apple tart, and some people mix their eggs with Maple syrup and spending time together, children hunt for chocolate eggs, and Most of us attend mass. Christians celebrate Easter, just like anywhere else. People celebrate Easter to mark the death, and Resurrection of Christ. I usually celebrate Easter, but I always celebrate Ukrainian Easter since I am Ukrainian, so yes, I do observe this holiday." - hhgb representing Canada.

"Here at Greece Easter we call ''Πάσχα'' (Pasxa). We celebrate Easter with Easter Candles which we go with them at Church at Sunday Midnight. After we come in the Church we crack the eggs [with]-each other in the family- and the Eggs are boiled and painted with Red. After the Crack of the eggs we have a dinner with Meat especially we eat goats. All Christians Orthodox and Catholics are celebrating this holiday. We celebrate this holiday because Jesus has beat death and resurrected. Yes i observe this holiday every year at Easter. One thing more, school close for 2 weeks so it will be more good for Children like me!" - dionyshs02_LE_SECOND representing Greece.

"Here , Easter is pronounced like Easter only but written like "ईस्टर" .Easter In India  is celebrated with church services, Easter eggs and Easter bunnies. People present each other with gifts, such as chocolate cakes, flowers and lanterns. There are carnivals on the beaches at Goa, where songs, dances and street plays are enjoyed. Since Good Friday was declared a public holiday by the Indian Government, people travel to weekend getaways. It's only celebrated by the catholic population though.Easter is to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ . No , I don't observe this holiday" - Suryansh15 representing India.

"Here, in Italy, Easter is called "Pasqua." In Italy at Easter  there are living representations. From North to South is a series of processions, religious rites, festivals, sacred performances, festivals and folkloric traditions.Sunday after Lent you eat the paschal lamb and eggs and sweets are distributed in the form of a dove. This religious festival celebrates and commemorates the sacred drama of the death and resurrection of Christ. I spend the Easter with my family giving everyone a chocolate egg.For lunch we eat usually lamb or kid and every region has its own traditions. In the evening we go to the streets to watch the shows that celebrate the death and resurrection of Christ." - ivangennaro representing Italy.

"First of all, in our language it is called 'Velykos'. It's religious holiday and each Christian celebrate it. They do, because Christ resurrected for us at that day. We usually visit our grandparents at morning. There we eat some meal and beat eggs. This way we find out who has the strongest egg. Traditionally, we don't get presents at that day like at Christmas, but every family has different traditions. Most Lithuanians play Easter day games with family or friends. For example they bowl eggs and whose egg hits another one - win. I personally celebrate this holiday every year and this holiday is my favorite." - tomukas2957 representing Lithuania.

"[it is called] Pasen. We hide some chocolate eggs and then seek it. :) :) :) Everybody who likes to celebrate this special day.  [it is celebrated] Cause Jesus died for people on this day. Yes, I like this holiday very much." - feli-fighter representing Netherlands

"In South Africa, Easter is a time where people get together to enjoy each others company. In America, where I live now, people will take any excuse for a party, but in SA people like parties not so much because of the party, but because of the people involved. In that regard it is just another holiday. Indeed, the very idea of a holiday is different in SA versus the rest of the world. In America, each holiday has its own set of lights, cards, candy, toys, wrapping paper, and mattress specials; but back in SA Easter is more about family than the eggs and the bunnies in the gardens. Easter has its roots firmly in the Christian faith, and this is celebrated openly. This is not because South Africa is a tribal country, it is because the people there are accepting and will welcome any race with open arms. Hamba Kahle!" - ZachPadda11 and AkiliW representing South Africa.

"In Sweden , Children dress up as Easter witches; clad in discarded clothes, gaily coloured headscarves and red-painted cheeks, they go from house to house in the neighborhood and present the occupants with paintings and drawings in the hope of getting sweets in return. Here people go to church and colour Boiled eggs and give those as a holiday gift." - MisterLegend representing Sweden

"Well in my country its called Easter because in from UK so there isn't anything special about it. On Good Friday Christians assemble outside their church (there are different types of church), and take a big cross and walk with it on the streets, while others carry small crosses. They usually then go for a short service, where they sing a hymn, and in between each verse have a verse from the Bible. Then on Easter Sunday, some go to church, but most spend the day with their family. Christians [celebrate this holiday]. [it is celebrated] Because Jesus died on the cross, and that's more important to Christians than Christmas, as Jesus saved you from going to hell. Before his time, whenever you committed a sin you would need to sacrifice an animal to God. Well no [i do not celebrate this holiday] and the reason why is because I'm Muslim we have different pathways, different methods, different culture so its not the same. - Who.Boss representing United Kingdom.

"Our country calls this holiday Easter. The way we celebrate this holiday hugely depends on religious preference. Usually, we have "Easter Egg Hunts" where we hide eggs with candy in them and we try to find them. If you are religious, usually you will celebrate it by remembering the resurrection of Jesus. (If you're religious) Everyone celebrates this holiday as it was originally intended to be religious but now people who aren't religious can participate through fun Easter egg hunts with the "Easter bunny". I myself observe this holiday as well, as most people generally observe it in America." - Theawesomecooldude representing United States.
