Wifi problems

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, i am having problems with my wifi, and mom's laptop. So heres the problem-

My mom's laptop is not catching our house wifi, but it is catching all of our neighbours.

me, and my dad's laptops are catching our house wifi, perfectly with no problems.

The wifi works, when the cable is plugged in.

Once i turned off my mom's laptop, and turned it back on, and magically, it worked, but only until, i turned it off again, and since then it hasn't worked.

My mom's laptop was brought in 2013, and so was our modem.

Please any of you computer experts help me, because i am using my mom's laptop till my laptop comes back from service, in about a month, and i have to finish a 20 page project in about a week, so please help.

I am no expert but I might be able to help you out:

Is there any proxy or firewall disconnecting you from your modem ~ any accidental setting change?

Is there a limit by the service provider limiting the amount of devices connected to the modem?

I don't, can you tell me how to check that, and while my father is at work, and my laptop is at service, it still does not connect to the wifi, while it is the only laptop trying to connect to it.

Look in firewall for any setting that might block your wifi connection

I tried turning my firewall off, but it still does not connect.

Hello!
This is not a tanki related problem, but i see no harm of helping you, so here's what you need to do!
Right click on the signal mark d265dc0c.jpg
Choose "Troubleshoot problems"
It will automatically detect problems, and fix them.
Not working yet? turn off your wi-fi using the wi-fi button on your laptop and turn it on again, nothing yet?

Your router and the network adapter in your PC might not work together.

To work, the network adapter in your PC must use a wireless standard that is equal to or older than the router’s wireless standard. For example, if the network adapter in your PC uses the 802.11n wireless standard (also called Wireless-N) but your router uses 802.11g (also called Wireless-G), you won't be able to connect because the Wireless-G standard is an earlier version and doesn’t recognize Wireless-N. However, if the router uses Wireless-N but the adapter in your PC uses Wireless-G, you should be able to connect if the router is set to mixed mode, since Wireless-N works with some or all of the earlier standards (802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g).

^^  That

And it would be nice if you'd had a dual band router, it can operate at 5 GHZ aswell instead of the common 2,4 GHZ.

The 2,4 GHZ frequency of your neighbours can interfere with your signal when your router is set as 2,4 GHZ too.

On the other hand, you can ask your neighbours if they've (or buy :P) a dual band router that can operate at different frequencies, it would solve the problem aswell.

Your mom's laptop from 2013 should be able to support dual band connections; but I would check to see if it actually does, if I were you.

Geek info:

When you're shopping for a new router, look for a dual-band, 802.11n MIMO device (as already mentioned by M.G. above) , which typically has an "N600" label. The "N" refers to 802.11n, an international Wi-Fi standard approved in 2009. MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) technology provides greater range by using multiple antennas to transmit and receive data. And "600" refers to two bands, each transmitting at 300 megabits per second

I have done all of that. But it still doesn't work.

And the thing that you say about my wifi not supporting my mom's laptop. It couldn't be possible, because sometimes(only sometimes) it works, when i restart my wifi, and mom's laptop at the same time.

For MODS: Please let me know when you move a topic to a different section. Because it took me more than a week to find this topic.

The part about your neighbours network; interfering with yours... have you asked around yet?

Could be similar frequencies.

And you can visit your profile content for recent topic's you've made.

Maybe you router has been set to only allow specific computers connect to the wireless network.

Try going to the router settings and look for something called Mac Authentication

And if you see a list of addresses then you might want to put in your Mom's computer Mac address

Also your router might be using WEP or WAP and your mom's laptop can only detect one of those

unless you all have same laptops then I can't think of anything else

I suspect your modem is turned on all the time? What happends when you reset modem with your mother's computer turned on?

Can you detect your network, and have problem with connecting to it, or you CAN'T see your network in wifi list?

Have you tryed to disable security in your network, so you dont need password to connect? Of course only for testing.
