Before you read the title, roll your eyes, and decide to walk away with feelings of disappointment, disapproval or disdain, let me tell you this article has nothing to do with online dating, relationships and all things related. The philosophy behind the aforementioned is extensive and complicated, not to mention that it varies from person to person, so let's just forget about it for now. In stead, I will be focusing solely on the role-playing aspect of Tanki Online. But in order to understand it better, let's define role-play.

In psychology, roleplaying is simply "acting out or performing a particular role", and in gaming it's pretty much the same, with the primary goal of entertainment - not much else. While there are many online multiplayer role playing games, Tanki isn't one of them. In fact, Tanki has virtually no roleplaying whatsoever...

Role playing kind of adds a new dimension to the game. Clans are a very basic type of roleplay, but since they are so systematized, you really lose the feel of it. Let's look at some other examples:

  • You can play out actual historical battles and pretend to be certain empires or nations; direct the course of battle to replicate the strategy that may have been used.
  • Create games-within-games, for example "protect the leader" where the whole team's responsibility is to protect one single tank, or race with other tanks.
  • And why not get married and start a family? If you hang out with certain friends a lot, you play together, you go to rankups together - add a fun aspect and start a family. It will give you something new to think about, give you things to do, and you will definitely get attention from other players.

Let's take a closer look at the practical aspect.

If you enjoy roleplaying on your own or with just a few other people, you can also do things like dating, or a proposal.
If not - if you like to roleplay publicly so everyone can partake of the experience - then you'd want to focus on just the proposal or the wedding event. Here's how I proposed publicly, and it was really fun.

Dating

Dating is... well... just spending time with someone doing something you both like, right? And you'd probably want to be alone, without a whole crowd of blood-thirsty players, that's why those of you who only role-play publicly should skip this part.

Here are some ideas for what you could do:

Yup, I tried them all out so it's tried and proven :P No guarantees that you enjoy the same things I do though.

  • Play hide and go seek. As pathetic as it may sound, it's actually fun to go on a really big (and preferably unfamiliar) map, and take turns looking for the other player.
  • Go find a picturesque landscape, sit there and just talk. Yes, it may not be different from any other chatting, but something about having a location and atmosphere makes it different. For the same reason you are dating in the first place - roleplay.
  • Dance. What? In Tanki? Believe it or not the smaller more maneuverable hulls like Wasp can pull off some pretty fancy spins, and if timed with some music and your partner, you might actually be able to put some moves together. Dancing isn't for everyone, but then again... what is?
  • Do parkour. Yes, you may be noob at it, but there's nothing like setting a goal and achieving it together.
  • Draw things with mines or bullet holes - you can get really creative and draw interesting things... though it takes a lot of time and precision.
  • Play with the same combos. I mean obviously players do this all the time, but it's always cool to turn around and see your twin protecting your back.

Proposal

Proposals always call for creative ideas, if you don't want to be like everyone else.

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do in Tanki, but even so you can get pretty creative. If you decide to do this publicly, here's some ideas off the top of my head:

  • Do a flash mob type proposal. Enter a seemingly normal battle with your soon to be fiance and start playing. In advance you've agreed with some players what you will be doing, just make sure news doesn't leak, so that it can be a surprise. You can do a parade, some dance, a display of special paints, a tower, or a simple lineup. At first your fiance might be confused at what's going on, but when you say the magic words I'm pretty sure their tank's mouth will be hanging agape... if it had one.
  • You can do it alone of course, but then it's kinda a more quiet sweet one.. which is great of course if that's what you like.
  • You can do a public post in the forum, it will also have quite some impact, but be sure you will get your share of trolls and haters. I settled for this type, and I'm pretty happy with the results.

Wedding

Like the real thing, a wedding in Tanki will take a lot of planning. You'll want to settle for a date, a time, a particular map. You'll want to think of the ceremony, whom to invite, who will be the officiant (if any), best man and maid of honor, who will take pictures and videos, etc. Not a small task, be sure.

Generally most weddings I've seen follow the same plot:

  1. Usually a big map is chosen, which has a symmetrical layout for better looks. Stadium and Berlin are frequent choices, Dusseldorf is a great choice too. But hey, you don't have to pick those maps - pick an asymmetrical one, or at least one that people hardly play on - you will get points for originality and it will feel more special as well.
  2. All guests line up on either side of the walkway where the couple will pass on the way in and out. They can be wearing matching items and paints for maximum effect, as the whole thing will look so much more organized.
  3. The officiant can either lead the couple through the walkway to some platform, or he can already be waiting there for them.
  4. The couple can also be wearing matching paints, or black and white, or whatever you decide. No "norm" there as far as I've seen.
  5. The best man and maid of honor can be carrying the flags (as rings) to give to the couple after the ceremony.
  6. After the officiant finishes his speech and the couple says their vows and "kiss" (also open to interpretation), they can exchange flags [rings] and then walk back down through the walkway as the crowds cheer for them. If they are wearing Freeze/Firebird this looks even better.

This is just the very basic layout of a regular Tanki wedding (which happens pretty often on the Russian side). The more creative you get, and the further you stray away from the usual, the higher chance you have of making something really special and cool, although you also risk ending up with a complete fail. Your call.

If you're not the big wedding type, then just do a small one with you and your best man and maid of honor, maybe a couple close friends - whatever suits your fancy. An exotic beach wedding in Rio won't hurt anyone :D

Here's a simple example of a wedding I found by some Russian guy:

And from the entire English community I think the most iconic wedding ever was between two old staff members @FlipSquad and @MizARee

Maybe you'll be the next player to surprise us all with a great wedding event! Looking forward to it ^_^

Though I've purposely avoided the subject, I'll have you know that for many Tankers "dating" in Tanki led to real relationships later. Quite a few Russian married couples originally met and got to know each other through Tanki. Something to think about.

Sorry arch, I don't get it. Must just be how I am, but I can't figure out what's real and what is "role-play." Like, do you actually know Mia? Are you getting married in real life? Maybe someone could clarify...? Sorry for being stupid.

You can just try thinking of it in a different world line, one that only exists on Tanki : )
