I put my arms up, admitting defeat. I slowly drew out my concealed gun and started firing.

"Run!" I said as bullets whizzed past my ears. My friend ran as I fired and slowly backed away. When we were in the clear, I discovered I had been hit! Blood was dripping and my friend attempted to stop the bleeding by applying pressure on the wound. It was the last thing I saw before I slowly blacked out...

I came to with the sound of bullets being fired. We were still trapped! I got up, ignoring the pain and fired at the Germans. I took out those blocking us and made it through the labyrinth.

We got out finally and stole a tank, driving cautiously to not get shot by our allies anti tank missiles. We got out of the tank after driving back to base.

After confirming that we weren't spies, our allies let us in. I got sent to the medic for treatment of my wounds.

I knew more allies were trapped, waiting to be saved. And the Germans would not give up, and would return tomorrow.

Chapter 4

As we sprint across the streets, I notice an abandoned jeep nearby. I drag Boris with me and run towards the jeep. He doesn't resist. However, before we could board the jeep, a shot rings in the air, accompanied with the traditional German "STOPP". We stop where we are. The Germans come and disarm me. Boris insists on guarding the rear with a strange expression which I can't quite fathom. The Germans begin to march me back to the prison, when I suddenly hear shots near me and feel the grip on my shoulder lessening. I swing around to see that Boris had fired those shots. He drags me and starts running. "Hurry, comrade, hurry", he shouts. We spot the Russian regiment at a distance. A sigh of relief exits my body. The Russian soldiers spot us too and start to approach us faster. We reunite with our comrades and narrate our story.

Suddenly, Boris shouts, "Watch out comrade!" and pushes me out of the way of an approaching bullet, and gets himself shot instead. A lone German soldier made that shot. Enraged, I take out my sidearm and shoot him in the head. I approach Boris and kneel down next to him. My eyes are heavy with tears. He manages to get out a whisper, "I am sorry, my friend. Please forgive me." I respond assertively, "I forgive you, my friend. I will make sure that our motherland will remember you as a hero." He smiles faintly and closes his eyes.

15 years later:

We won the war, of course.

Looking back, I guess that Boris' expression was that of guilt, and determination to save me. It was hard to recognize because very few people are truly penitent of their misdeeds. Boris was right about the effect of war, though. The grief caused by war takes it's toll on you.

A hero died that day. Boris, may your name live on forever.

chapter 4 :

                                            survival

as  i and boris fled through the un-ending corridors, one of the germans managed to land a shot on my left leg. i felt an immense surge of pain.i fell to the ground and lay there, with blood flowing from my leg.i tried to get up.but again fell to the ground.the germans were getting closer as each second passed.in that moment boris shoved a pill in to my mouth and told me to swallow it.i knew that  i shouldnt.but i had no choice as his gun was pointed at me. as i swallowed the pill, i heard a big explosion.and blackout.

i opened my eyes to find i was in a sort of  white room.there was a man there in a white coat. he said" you are awake.good.he will want to see you."

i muttered  a few weak words"who?who want to see me?if you want to kill me then do your worst."At that second a large man, with a scar on his face, barged into the room and said "so this is the soldier the men found.he looks in good shape.doctor get haim back on his feet as fast as possible."

i said "who are you? what are you doing?"

he said "my name is colonel Marx.my men found you during an intense fight.a german armada tried to kill you and so we saved you as you must have been someone important to have an armad after yourself. as soon as you tell me everything we will decide on what to do for you"

Hearing the answer. i laid back my head ,and drifted away.

Ch-4 German on Trouble

Boris and I were totally on a tight situation. Then suddenly Boris whispered into my ears "Even if we surrender we die by getting hanged, so dont you think it it is better to die like a warrior killing a maximum of 5 to 6 by my little pistol. I understand you Aumritash that dieing for my country is better". I cried a little and Boris looked on a German soldier and said as loudly as he could " Believe it or not we die to get freedom like a real warriors not for conquering other countries without reason". Then another German soldier kept a gun on my head saying "Oh oh, saying these dialogues wont save your friend dear". Looking me captured he went dumbstruck ed and said "I do am a low officer so I cant surrender until my boss says me to do so". Saying this he pointed his pistol to the German soldier and put the trigger on and then I had to surrender to save my little friend. There were 10 German soldiers took us to their vehicle by walking  about 85 meters before going to the vehicle 8 soldiers went to drink some coffee and 2 people guard for us. I dont know how but Boris somehow managed to kill 2 soldiers with a silencer and said me to hide in the truck. Our luck was with us the was in the truck ! I immidietly started the truck , just as I started the 8 German soldiers started to shoot me I safely took it away but Boris got shot in his left hand. Boris saw back and killed a soldier and injured a few with his pistol. I was amazed to see his skill, I thought to promote him after this battle. So atlast we were out of the area safely and to my astonishment I say Nikolai went another person named Auritras. When I asked them whats their team onto Nikoai said " We have captured over 12 bases of German army so now they are in great trouble, some of our soldiers got Germay's atom bombs so now they have none, soon they have to suurrender".I immidietly said "thats cool but please save Boris , he is in danger".Auritras said " I am doctor dont worry".

Chapter 4: The Last Stand

"Stopp!" one of the soldiers demanded again, as I take a sharp turn to the left.
The German soldiers discharge their weapons at us, merely missing Boris and I. The bullets collide into the wall, pulverizing it, and releasing a cloud of smoke. I hear the soldiers coughing, as they struggle to persue us.
"Lets run," I whispered to Boris.
Just as we were about to take off, the soldiers had gotten through the smoke, and were trying to persue us once again. I grab my sidearm and fire at the soldiers, panting.
"We gotta hide, we can't outrun the enemies in their own territory," I commented.
"Agreed," Boris replied.
We took another sharp turn, and spun behind a few boxes.
"We have no chance if we continue running. We have to escape at midnight," I decided.
"Wo kann sie sein?" one of the soldiers exclaimed.
"Wir sollten auch weiterhin auf der Suche nach ihnen," another replied.
German soldiers slowly tiptoed down the hall, pointing their guns around. I pulled the fuse of my grenade, and slowly stood up.
"Hast du das gehört?" a soldier asked.
I got up, and threw the grenade in the hallway.
"Es ist eine Granate!" another soldier yelled.
The explosion destroyed the hallway, but the boxes had blocked the shrapnel, just as I hoped.
"Run now!" I yelled to Boris.
I knew it would take a matter of minutes before reinforcements of the German forces would arrive. I asked Boris for a few more directions for the exit. As I approached the door, the door was locked shut.
"Do you have any explosives on you?" I asked.
"I have the key, they trusted me with it,' Boris answered.
He pulled out a key, and slowly handed it to me. I quickly unlocked the door, and dashed for freedom. As I walked outside, the city didn't seem like it was empty yet. Soldiers and tanks patrolled the streets. As I slowly crawled back to our camp, a German soldier had spotted us.
"Persue die russischen Truppen!" he yelled.
Boris and I broke into a sprint.
The soldier discharged his gun at us, as we ran down the ghostly streets. All of a sudden, Boris whines and falls on the ground. I look back, and see him on the street. I turn back...
"Don't worry about me, I did betrayed you, I deserve this," Boris confesses.
"No. Friends don't let friends suffer, even if your friend has betrayed you. I forgive you," I muttered, as I help him on my shoulder.
The soldier approached us at an alarming rate, and I pick up my sidearm and fire once. The city goes silent, as I drag Boris back to camp. Hours crawl by, as I make a dash for camp.
"Where have you two been?" Nikolai demands.
"Long story..." I reply.
"Okay, so let me just fill you in. Next week, we are going to attack Berlin, and win the war once and for all," Nikolai announces.
A week had gone by since Boris and I had escaped from Berlin. As I began to put my gear on, Boris begins to sob.
"I don't deserve to fight again, I am a coward, a traitor to our country," Boris confesses.
"You are not, you ended up knowing what was right," I patted Boris on the back, "We can still win this war."
"You think so?" Boris says.

"Yeah," I reply.
Boris and I slowly jump into our APC. An hour sped by, and we arrived in the city next to Berlin. Nikolai issued our attack routes, and gave each a map.
"Make sure you don't go into the middle of the city before the rest of the defense is taken out," Nikolai confidently says, "I'm sure we can finish them off."
As Boris and I march along with thousands of other troops, we see the lights from the hill.
"CHARGE," I yell.
We all charge into the city, and slowly conquer the city, little by little. Boris and I storm each apartment slowly.
"This is so boring, let's just go storm the center of the city," Boris complains.
"Nikolai said no... we should listen to him," I reply.
"Why should we listen to Nikolai, he is so incompetent," Boris remarks.
"I guess your right," I say.
We sprint toward the center of the city, and begin to fire our rifles at the Germans. We slowly take down many soldiers. All of a sudden I hear a yelp. I look to the side of me, and I see blood trickling down Boris' head. I tied a white bandage around his head, and carried him back to base.
The medic pronounced him dead, an hour later. I began to tear up, and cried. Boris had been a good friend, and he died with pride.
Two weeks later, Boris' funeral takes place, and I remeber all the time I had spent with Boris, and sadness takes over my mood.

We found ourselves in a dead-end alley.  I waited for the Germans to turn the corner and gun us down.  All we heard was the scream of an incoming artillery shell, and a shuddering blast from around the corner.  Then, silence.

"That was an 88 round," Boris said absently.

"Fritz was betrayed by his own artillery," I nodded.  "Just like you betrayed the Motherland!"

"I love Mother Russia," he answered heatedly, "but this 'Soviet Union' is not my Motherland!  Hitler is a better speaker than Stalin, but they're both crazy and they're both bad.  Why should I care who wins this useless war?  Why shouldn't I try to make a decent deal for myself?"

"Boris, you betrayed me, too!  We've endured awful food and sleepless nights; we've gone through mud and snow and more mud; we've been shot at and shelled and strafed... how could you do this to me?  You were a hero once.  Why can't you be a hero again?"

"I could be a hero again," he said slowly, "if someone gave me a good reason.  Right now, I'm all out of reasons."

I heard something above me; I aimed my pistol quickly and fired.  A German sniper slumped halfway out a third-story window.  His rifle fell to the ground in front of us.  I picked it up, then handed my pistol to Boris.  "This city is no place for an unarmed man.  But I'll be right behind you, so don't try anything.  We're returning to our lines, and when we do, you will -"

"Handehoch!"  A German officer with a pistol had turned the corner and gotten the drop on us.  I put down the rifle and raised my hands as he'd ordered.

"Major Thoma," Boris said evenly.

"Sergeant Boris," the major said in accented Russian.  "I thought we had a deal!  Now I find you with your old friends again.  But that's the trouble with traitors - they can't decide whose side they're on."  He aimed his pistol at Boris' chest.  "The German Army has found a solution to that problem."  He fired...

...just as I leaped in front of my old friend.

The pain was indescribable.  I couldn't breathe; I couldn't stay on my feet.  As I slumped to the ground, I heard my pistol snap, and I heard a gasp and a thud from the German's direction.  I couldn't see what was happening.  My eyesight was going gray and hazy.

Then I saw Boris' pale, unshaven face right in front of mine.  "You took that bullet... for me?"

I wanted to tell him to return to our lines and fight for the Motherland.  I wanted to tell him to be a hero again, for both of us, because my heroic days were done.  But all I could say were five short words.

"Earn this, Boris.  Earn it."

For me, the war was over.

Part 4: Brother

I take a moment to catch my breath knowing that the Germans are behind me. Doubts creep into my mind as to whether I'll ever be able to make it out. I turn and look at Boris, he looks at me like a man who is lost. Poor Boris, he is confused, he doesn't know what to do, and above all, he is bleeding out.

We carry on moving, we can hear the dogs barking, knowing that soon they will be on our trail. We manage to make it out to a back road that seems to be unused. Boris turns to me and says, " Nikolai, I don't know if we will make it".

"Boris, hang in there, we will make it, let's just keep moving".

"Nikolai, there's something you should know"

I look at Boris confused, wondering what else he could possibly tell me.

"What is it Boris?"

"I... Never mind, it's nothing"

"Are you sure it's nothing Boris?"

"Yes"

"Let's carry on moving, it will be nightfall before we know it."

Boris and I carry on walking down the unused, back road when we sight a old cottage

"Come Nikolai, we should take refuge in this cottage"

"I don't think that is a good idea Boris, the Germans are on our trail and could be here any moment".

"Nikolai, I don't think I can continue any more".

"Nonsense Boris, let's find you a rag and a stick and close up that wound of yours".

"That's not what I meant Nikolai".

I looked at Boris with a face of befuddlement, "What are you talking about Boris?"

"Over the past few days, I have been thinking. I have been thinking about what lies ahead for us if we were to ever make it back".

"We would be taken care of Boris, Mother Russia would look after us".

"Would she? Can you guarantee that?"

"Yes".

"No Nikolai, you can't. I agreed to help the German because there is no end to this war. How many sons, brothers, fathers, nephews, grandsons, uncles must die before this ends? There is no end to this, there will always be conflict Nikolai".

I had no response to Boris. I just stood there befuddled.

Suddenly, I heard dogs barking and half-track engines approaching. The sound was all too familiar, and I knew what was in store.

"Come Boris, we must make haste".

"No, Nikolai. I cannot go, there is no point to this".

Without realizing it, I heard footsteps fast approaching, I barricaded the door and prepared myself for the inevitable. Boris looked at me, and said "You must make it out alive".

The next thing I heard was the sound of my own gun slamming against my head. I woke up in a closet, looked out, and saw that the door had been broken. There was a pool of blood, and worse,  Boris was nowhere to be found. I wept at the loss of my brother. I then found a note from Boris that read, "Nikolai, I am sorry that I ever betrayed you, and Russia. But there is no end to my misery, I only hope that there is an end to yours. Be safe my brother."

I marched my way back to Russia, thinking of what Boris had told me. Perhaps he was right, perhaps there is no end to the misery. Days went by, and I began to think more and more about Boris's feelings. I muttered to myself "I'll be the change that Boris could not find". I returned to Russia a changed man. They asked to me to rejoin the army, I said no, I explained to the leaders about Boris and how I felt. They threw me in prison for treason, and I sit here planning my path to change. For Boris. For change. For hope.
