Do your parents use Skype? If no, then I can understand their apprehensions. Maybe, they are afraid that you come into contact with strangers and fall into trouble. All sorts of things happens these days... Brainwashing, cyber bullying, etc. So, your parents fear is justified.

However, Skype, unlike other forms of social media cannot be used to contact unknown persons. You can chat with someone only if you have their Skype id. Moreover, most people here are matured and respectable. Logically, there is nothing to fear but if your parents do not know about this forum and the community, there is nothing much that can be done.

Well, I assume he uses it for buiseness matters.

Skype is used by groups on forum because it is easier to communicate there. First of all, you can't have more than 4 people per conversation on forum. It becomes a tedious task if you have to communicate a message to 20-30 or even more people. Managing one group on Skype is far more easier.

Clans use Skype and have a group call during a battle which makes coordination much more easier and effective.
