The Wordsmith:

On Writing Implements and Swords

They say that the pen is mightier than the sword.

I disagree.

A pen is nothing but a hollow tube of plastic encasing a cartridge of ink. It functions as an extension of the directing hand and the reflecting mind that guides it. Nothing more.

It is not a rare, valuable nor remarkable object - and beyond a propensity for giving one a nasty writer's cramp, there is nothing particularly dangerous or mighty about a pen.

Imagine this: A desperate scalawag has just challenged you to a duel. He stands at the ready opposite you, wielding a wickedly sharp blade of tapered steel.

You, are holding a pen.

You uncap it, and sadly, no celestial bronze blade appears.

It's just a pen.

Your opponent's sword comes up, and a sinking feeling establishes itself in the bottom of your gut. You realize that it's good-bye to this world and hello to the next, because no pen is going to stop a sword-thrust.

So, no. The pen is not mightier than the sword.

But words are.

The ability to write - to capture thoughts and lay them out the page - proves a far more resilient and durable thing than any iron bar. Because a sword, powerful as it is, will eventually weaken and rust. It will shatter. Its time to influence events is limited.

But words can inspire generations of people.

They ring clearly through the centuries...the millennia even, connecting the reader with all those who came before.

Show me a sword that can do that and I'll be impressed.

ok so but basically when they say pen they actually mean word so its metaphor so what you said is flawed so its just that you no understand metaphor (or simile, whatever) so i have to agree with electro on his wise 'ok' cause the intro of your text is basically pointless but still I LOVE YOUR INTRO

He may be talking literally a pen is useless against a sword. But who knows? :D

Alright. This was very...pointfull then.

Don't dip your head just yet friend, who knows, maybe there are some people that are just moronic enough to require someone to use 300 words to describe how a pen is better than a sword.

Fine. Then we'll settle on the most point-less, point-full piece out there.

Oh and one last thing...

Don't dip your head just yet friend, who knows, maybe there are some people that are just moronic enough to require someone to use 300 words to describe how a pen is better than a sword.

I'm quite positive that I saw some topic on how to make chocolate chip cookies the other day. If the forum needs that, then I think my ramblings on pens and swords won't hurt either.  :)

(Err....that is until the mods decide to disagree.)

Well then, I might as well just save them the trouble and edit it to say TOPIC CLOSED BY STUPID USER.

Then again, I might not, because it'll be interesting to see just how long this makes it.

C'mon, y'know Riordan was jerking the ol' chain, when he made Percy's sword a pen and a sword. Talk about irony...
