No not really, they only seem identical because they are both Latin based languages, just like French, Italian, Romanian, Romansch, and possibly Walloon. They are all known as Romance languages because they are all Latin based. 

It's like saying German and English are almost identical because they have similar pronunciation and stuff like that.

I was saying that German to English stuff in a sarcastic manner.

It's like saying Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and any other Asian country are the same!
