Reporter Dialogue: Slang

Date: 3/25/16

Time: Unknown.

A conversation recorded between two reporters, dug up from the moldering depths of Skype chat and processed for the public to read.

Proceed with caution.

Night: ‘ey pho, wassup grl, howya been?

Pho: Fine as a phoenix flight, thank you.

Night: hhhh, coolio ma homie, I’m down with that. U r, like, a total pro, dawg. <3

Pho: Ummm...‘ma homie’?? ‘dawg’???!!??

Maybe - perhaps - possibly - that’s taking the slang a bit far, k.

Night: Wut m8? ‘Cuz I r8 it 8/8. Dontchya know, slang is da bomb. As ive always said, if u cant hashtag somethin’ then whats the point? #English-is-for-nerds, #Why-bother, #Death-to-Punctuation

Pho: Nighty?? What’s wrong????

Night: Yo, if gaming slang works for everyone else, it’s good enuff for me!!!

Pho: (Sigh) Looks like Tanki chat has gotten the better of you, Night. It seems slang usage is contagious and addictive too... :/

Night: Whut? No way did TO get teh ‘best’ of me, this is online communication @ it’s finest. Simple, fast, readeble, it’s a new age, we gotta embrace it!

Pho: This...stuff...is hardly "readeble," as you ever-so delightfully put it.

Night: xaxaxaxa, chillax grl. It’s just slang.

Pho: Just slang?!? Not only are your abbreviations and random colloquialisms annoying, but It's people like you who are contributing to the downfall of Western society as we know it. You’re murdering English grammar!!!! .-.

Night: Grammar? It's overr8ed m8. So tell me Pho, why is slang sucha bad thing, hmm?

Pho: Grammar overrate... Look, slang isn't necessarily bad, but you shouldn’t use it to the point where you don’t even use real words anymore. It makes you really hard to understand, not to mention the fact that you seem to be the embodiment of all cyber-stereotypes, ever. -.-

Night: W8, hard to understand? Grl, plz, slang is all about shorter, snappier, and concise-er communication. It’s a waste of time and energy to type your words out fully when you could shorten them and spend more time on the important stuff...like rockin' out at TO. xD

Pho: I think the correct word you’re looking for is “lazy”. Incredibly so. Seriously - the word “girl” is only one syllable long and you still managed to leave out a letter. It doesn't take that much longer to type things out fully, and then maybe your words won't look like a bunch of typos.

Night: Well... okay, meybe. But u can’t deny that it makes ur writing unique. By using slang, you can put your own spin on your words…it makes ya stand out from the crowd, and gets u beyond the rulz of grammar.

Pho: If you mean “unique” in the sense that you’re the only one who doesn’t seem to know how to talk, you’re absolutely right! Honestly, when overdone, it makes you seem shallow, not unique. You look like you don’t take anything seriously, to the point where you can hardly be taken seriously yourself.

Night: Hhhh, rlly Pho? Slang users aren’t all incompetent idiots.

Pho: No? Have you looked at the main TO chat lately?

Night: Meh, main chat is just another reason that you shud use slang. The anti-flood is hideous to work around, so shortening ur words has a clear and definite advantage there. The less u type, the more u get to say!!11!!

Pho: I agree that the anti-flood wait is super annoying, but it’s something you can take advantage of, plz. The seconds wouldn’t last as long if you thought about properly shortening everything you want to say. If you have a paragraph of ideas you’re itching to spew, try compacting into just a few words. That way, you don’t even need to cut down the letters in the words themselves; you just end up requiring less words anyway. Voilà! You’ve slayed that waiting time as a Shaft M4 does an unsuspecting lil’ M1 ok.

Night: Since when does an M4 shaft play with M1s -.- :? :/ ;o ^.^

Pho: (Sigh) You're missing the point...well, at least emoticons are not as irritating as things like “wud”, “cud” and “shud”. Shame on the phoenix who made those up. (cough)

Night: Oh yes, the art of using emoticons to bring feeling to your writing. They add sparkle, and help express humor, sarcasm…. <3 hhh, emojis are pro.

PhoeniXD: I’m totally with you on that one :PP

Night: Uh what happened to ur name????

PhoeniXD: It’s got more sparkle now. d3s

Night: Okay warpelican.

PhoeniXD: GG. go cri noob

Night: Nuuuuuu mult -.- nug, mult, nubissimo, mult, Hy6, mult, noob, mult.................

Recording terminated.
