The Commander

My first ever short story, made around 2-3 months ago. Hope you enjoy!

-The Commander-

The Commander looked out from the balcony. Straight across the mountains ahead, perhaps a mile or so from where he stood, was the once-great capital of Firma – the “supreme empire”. Where once the people stood proud and the emperor mighty, was now a ramshackle city – starved out by the Commander’s forces and terrified of his hordes across the Unholy Mountains. The emperor had long fled, and with him half the population. Long dead, those refugees had tried to take the unforgiving Northern Pass, where the Commander held sway over the hill tribes and warlords. Of course, a small group of survivors would show up now and then, but these were easily disposed of. However, an occasional army battalion would come looking for comrades the Commander knew would never be seen alive again. These battalions put up brave fights, for which the Commander admired them for, but their efforts were in vain as their casualties grew ever larger and the Commander’s ever smaller.

He was interrupted by one of his senior officers, a human who went by Drachen, as thoughts of Firma’s fall went through his head.

“It is time, sir.”

The Commander turned around and faced the man who had formulated so many successful battle plans alongside his lord. Drachen was once one of the Infidels, the elite guard of the Rath. When the Commander swept through the Rath Empire, however, Drachen switched sides and vowed loyalty to him. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the Commander’s most valuable advisor.

“Sir?”

Back to reality.

“How many men are under my command at the moment?”

“We are several hundred thousand strong as of now, sir.”

The Commander thought for a while then gave his reply, “Too weak.”

Drachen seemed surprised. “Sir, disease runs rampant through their city. The people are terrified, and-”

“Quiet. The citizens of the Capital cannot be underestimated. They still have the Elite Guard with them, and the Silent Knights stand stronger yet.”

“I…understand, sir, your concern, but the Swarm grows impatient. Even at this moment, they may be considering treachery!”

At this, the Commander grew silent. The Swarm was a nomadic group of savages who started as a group of warlords from the South and grew to become a feared force, unable to be stopped by any defense. The Commander’s forces had been able to kill several important chieftains and force the Swarm into co-operation, but riots had broken out before, each one claiming more casualties than the first. If the Swarm were to turn on the Commander at this critical moment, the results would be disastrous.

“Send the order out: We attack at the stroke of nightfall. Dismissed.”

Drachen bowed out and left the Commander to do what he did best:

Conquer.

Awesome! I really enjoyed reading this, it definitely has the potential to be developed further.

That's actually what I plan to do. In a few years, you may find something like this story in a bookstore near you. ;)

[Cancelled] Didn't have the patience, procrastinated far too much. Started a fresh slate, new book started. If edits bump anything, I profusely apologize.
