The Golden Toy

16th October 2014

I was away from my monotonous college life attending a local conference last weekend. The theme of this con was a question- "Who Am I?". A very simple question put forward in three small words. Recently, one of my middle school friends buzzed me stating the importance of constant introspection in our lives. Intriguing. Definitely kept me thinking for a couple of days. So seriously, who the hell are we? What the hell are we doing on this planet? Here is my perspective.

Before I commence with the depth of this topic, I would love to tell you guys about a theory I came up with, a couple of days back. Well, it's a story actually, but I love to call it a theory. Whatever you are going to read for the next two minutes, think about it! Just keep imagining. Here we go. There was a boy, 9, who lived with his parents in Egypt. He had a golden toy, the most prized possession of his. He loved it so much that he played around with it everyday. He had other toys too, but this one just gave him some sort of happiness that the other toys did not. The boy was so happy. Seeing him so elated with the toy, everyone started getting jealous of him. All the other kids in the village wanted to steal his toy and play with it. The boy sensed this and went back to his father. Like all the other kids, he was insecure about his golden toy. He did not want to sacrifice on the thing he loved the most. " Papa, what do I do?", asked the boy with tears in his blue eyes. "Go hide it. Hide it so that no one will ever find it.", said the father. The boy was naive. He asked his father, "What is the safest place on this planet?" Since they lived in Egypt, his father told him to hide it in the Sahara desert. The boy obeyed his father and hid the golden toy in the desert.

For the next ten years of his life, the boy played with a lot of toys. He liked some toys even more than his golden toy, but eventually got bored of them. He turned nineteen. He did not feel happy in doing anything. Nothing was able to give him the same prolonged happiness. He was annoyed by the mess he fell into. The boy went to his father again. " Papa, what do I do?", he asked with the husky voice. His father looked into his eyes, and asked him to go find and get his golden toy back. The boy went to the desert. It is a desert. Deserts change every month. How on Earth can he find his toy? The boy lost his golden toy. He had no idea about its location.

He knows that nothing will give him the same happiness. So, he starts searching his toy. He uses different methods to find his toy. He uses a spade, a shovel and what not. Ten years just pass by and the boy could not find his golden toy. He failed thousands of times. Nothing helped. One day, out of exhaustion, he sits down to take some rest. The boy is twenty-nine now. Not a boy now, eh? He feels something. He hears a call from his heart. The boy digs the sand under him. Unexpectedly, he finds his golden toy. After ten years, he goes back to his dad and hugs him. "Go play with it, son.", the father kissed and told his son. The boy was happy again. He started playing with his golden toy again. Only this time, he used it to help others. He let others play with it as well. Another decade went by and now the boy was the most successful person on the planet. He was happy.

You see, every human being on this planet has his/her golden toy. It is his/her gift. We are given this toy when we step into this world. We play around with it. Why do people say that childhood is the best phase of your life? It is simple. We are free. No inhibitions. No fear to make mistakes. It is the happiest phase as we play with our toy. Just like the boy, one day we become worried of our golden toy because "people" want to steal it away. Someone in this world tells you to hide your golden toy because "people" will snatch it away. Like fools, we hide it. As we grow up, we start doing a lot of things. Things that look attractive to us. Things that give us a hell lot of happiness, but eventually we grow weary of it. We like a lot of things. We do a lot of things. We do not love any of them. Well, not like how we loved our golden toy. We just fall into the trap of adulthood. Then something happens and we realize that we need to find our golden toy. So we begin the search. We use a lot of methods to find it. We fail ten thousand times. One day, a method does our work. Something from our heart tells us that we have arrived at our destination. One day, we find our golden toy. We do not find it using spades or shovels. Rather, we find it by feeling the safest place for anyone, our hearts. And when we find it, trust me, the happiness comes back. According to my perspective, success in life is not earning money and having a nine digits sum in your bank account. It is not wearing a Zara suit everyday. Success is finding your golden toy and using it to serve others. I can go on and on about this, and how everything in life relates to this story. But what is the fun if you do not give it any sort of thought? So take some time out and think about this theory.

As a writer, I hope my readers can slightly relate to the story. I just feel that most of us are still finding our golden toys. Remember, no one can help you. You hid it in your heart. Stop looking around for it. Ask your heart. Ask yourself. You are the best.

What is that one thing that you can do for the rest of your life? One thing that you can never ever get bored of. One thing that will give you the same amount of happiness that you get when you do it right now. Think about it. Nothing can beat the happiness you get when you do 'it'. The answer to this question is your golden toy.

Love you!

Well written, I appreciate the analogy provided. My one issue is that it has the "textblock" syndrome, something I can sympathize with since I've had happen a lot. You could try and work it down by being more concise or by adding colors or pictures.

Or of course, I completely respect if these things would change the piece too much. Quality over everything else.  :P
