Interesting.

I ranked up a minute ago. My rating jumped from 89,298, if I recall, to 92,074 in that one battle.

Obviously rank has much to do with it. That pushed me up into the top 1000, versus something like 23,000th before ranking.

The other suggestions everyone has offered regarding what matters seems of mixed utility. Looking through the top 25 or so, nothing stands out, except all are legend rank.

Rank is the key driver, up to reaching Legend rank. Further rankups within Legend rank don't play any role.

Cry/EP ratio is crucial. Top ranked player has by far the best one, everybody in the top 25 have good ratios > 1.3. K/D matters as well, but to a lesser extent

It seems you are saying one can buy first place. Buying crystals improves the ratio, yes?

Only the crystals earned in battle count (so only the battle fund). Crystals earned through missions, Goldboxes caught or crystals bought in the shop don't matter.

However, crystals earned through Premium count in the rating. Premium gives 2x battle fund, 1.5x experience => buyers get a Cry/Ep ratio which is 33% better than that of a non-buyer.

So from that side, you need to be a buyer to maintain (or improve to) a top rating. I say "maintain", because in the past crystals earned through missions and Goldboxes caught counted as well, which is why most players now have a falling rating, as can be seen in this topic. If everybody kept playing long enough, eventually there'd only be buyers with a top rating..

I don't know that we can extract it, but I would love to see the list of top non-buyers. It just seems too impracticable to pull off with the information available to us.

If anything is a measure of aptitude, that would be it.

How would you measure a non-buyer then? Is it one that has never bought anything at all? Is it one that hasn't spent more than i.e. 15 bucks or is it one that hasn't bought something for a year?

You're hinting that it's not terribly possible to draw a clear line, and I'd agree. However:

  • If you have a shop paint, you're definitely a buyer. (That's going to change this weekend with the wide-ranging hand-outs for the "Bacon" paint. If this is not the only one, though... caught ya!)
  • If you have premium for a long time running (i.e., way longer than the daily missions or giveaways), you're definitely a buyer.

And that's about all we can say with near-certainty. I think your "buyer score", if I can take liberties with the nonexistent Tanki census results of ratings data only, is higher if:

  • You have inordinate supply usage per unit of experience
  • You have XT items below (e.g.) Generalissimo
  • You have many M3s below Generalissimo
  • More generally than above, you have a lot of equipment at maximum modification for your rank
  • You have paints worth many crystals not used in product kits sold in the garage, below Generalissimo
  • You have paints on kits only sold in the shop
  • You have T-* protection modules worth many crystals not used in product kits sold in the garage below Generalissimo

Most of the measures are not useful at the highest ranks, because you have lots of time to amass crystals through game-play.

I do think this can serve as a proxy, though. For example, I don't know if my supply usage is "inordinate", but I score near zilch on all of the others and am not a buyer for any dollar, ruble, peso, etc. threshold. Missions generate enough supplies that I am tripping over them all in my garage. (Too bad there isn't a supply "black market", or some way to make them available to teammates during games...)

Not knowing anything else about you, I would say that you have low component "scores" on all of these as well, so I will guess that you are not a buyer.

(By the way, congrats on your pending rank-up to Legend!)

But he might be a cheater if he succeeds against cheaters without using supplies.

In fact, I'd go beyond might for the first instance.

The only way he'd otherwise be successful without buying is if he is generally not playing against cheaters...

Thanks a lot for the detailed answer! And thank you for the congrats, much appreciated  :)

I think I agree with all your remarks of differentiating the profiles pages. Yes, that was my intention, that there should be a clear line of being either a buyer or a non-buyer. And if you are a buyer how strong is the buying behavior then.

To talk about me, I once bought crystals for 25 € on this acc, but that is around a 2 years ago (and dropped a bought GB for a friend ;)). I think one will classify me as a buyer then. Some players might be associated as a buyer, but they might only get additional crystals by events, newspaper quizzes, Vlog activities or by being a helper (like me). What about those that never bought anything in the shop, except of a clan license? I'm just curious, of how one should think about a matter like this.

A clear number of when a supply usage (supply per xp) is low, middle or inordinate would help maybe. I would also add the remark, that Legends/Gismos with a fairly low total playing time seem to be buyers (you have to ignore old players that played before the statistics were up tho).

If Tanki clearly shows the difference between buyers and nonbuyers, they should also show what percentage of the player's success comes from having more mults on one's own team than on the opposing team, plus what percentage of the time opposing players aim for you before aiming for your teammates...

Full rating list updated with latest stats as of today 12th July 2017, 20:00 CET. 88 players now in the list, 3 are new. For the 85 existing players, 78 lost rating positions, 7 gained positions.

So obviously most players keep playing worse and worse with the rating falling - or maybe they're just not spending enough hard cash on the game..? :D

New rating list:

Sorry, but in the mean time, the noob has changed name again.. :P
