Umm, that's not how you do it. Please read the introduction and rules again :)

It means I have to start all over again!

Can you better explain to me I understand better?

Hmmm. Pardon my ungratefulness, but I think the prizes are a bit small compared to the expected word count. I'm not saying 40k is anything to sneeze at (heaven knows I could use that) but it's exactly the same amount as previous Continue The Story contests. The problem is, the word limit for those was set at 500 whereas the minimum for this is 3000. A whopping 6 times more. I'm not saying the prize pool should be 6 times more than it is right now, but an extra 10k or two would be fair I think. I'll probably enter either way, but considering this will take approximately 6 times longer than the other contests, I'd like it to be a bit more worth my while :).

If you start writing any of those stories, you will reach 3k in no time. Plus, there's all of April left to write three thousand words. I'm sorry, but the prizes will have to stay as they are. BUT, they are dependent on the number of entries. If I see many entries, who knows, I might increase the rewards.

Five THOUSAND?

That's ten times the word limit from the previous times!

That's the maximum word limit.

^ I think you misunderstood the contest. The starts of three stories are given, you have complete either one, not each of em. The tanker who writes the best piece (one winner for each story) will win.

eh ok, i am out

- Story 1 -

*insert a suitable title for this story here*

2089. It was a time of death and despair -- the Earth had just survived famine, drought and whatnot. With the population rising and more and more people dying each year, thanks to food and water shortages, the planet was rotting to its core. Scientists all over the world were gathered to find a solution and to put an end to the madness, where it all but went wrong. Terror struck the planet - there was nothing but rock and sand. The air became toxic. Plants and animals died. We, the humans, were on a path to extinction. Someone had to stand up and do something - someone who would work not for themselves, but for humans, and mankind.

Years passed. The promised success never came. The population dropped by millions each day. Gangs of robbers and scavengers lurked the surface, acquiring anything useful that laid in their path.

I was a lead scientist working at the Center of Population and Environment Control, or what was left of it. I received a message from my Center last night. I had to face an unforgiving reality -- I had been put in charge; I had to change the Earth and return it to normal....

The message explained that the army for International security was sending tanks to public care centers to kill the people and loot their food and essential supplies. I had to save those people. Even though I was a scientist, I couldn't do anything. So I decided that it was time, time to stop all this. I started planning how to take over. I knew that I would have no partners until I accomplished on the first part of what could be called, a mission to save humanity. I spent a week spying on the Police going in and out of the headquarters. I prepared a plan that was risky but still, worth the danger. And then, one day, I secretly went inside and managed to get to the commanders personal drawer. I opened it and saw the files containing the names of places that had been attacked or were going to be attacked. Atra, Desert, Factory were some of those. Suddenly, the alarm went off. I quickly rushed out of the office and ran down the corridor with security guards in hot pursuit. The path led to the open ground where numerous tanks were. I saw the last chance of saving humanity, a tank which had no lock bounding it and ready to go. I quickly took the opportunity and soon I was driving away towards the exit. With one shot I broke the gate and rushed to the nearest public care center for spreading the news. The people first panicked but when they saw me come out, smiles spread on their faces. But it soon faded as hostile looking tanks, who had trailed me without my knowledge, began firing at the walls of the already weathered building. I rushed to the rescue. I destroyed most of the tanks with my newfound skills and the power of my shots. Some tanks started to flee. Many brave men and women helped me by stopping those tanks and bounding the soldiers inside them. The whole situation was under our control. Amazed by their bravery, I invited them to help me accomplish my mission by controlling the tanks left. They were ready to make me their leader. But I told them that the leader had rather let his fellow people die, and that I was not such a person. We all were given ranks, which obviously were Recruit. I raided the headquarters again, but this time, with an army of brave and skilled people. It would not be wrong to call the battle that we fought and won, the World War 3. My tank was very badly damaged after that and I was seriously injured but still I knew that I would survive because we had finished all the enemies. It had been kind of a tragic war because almost a thousand people died due to the missiles launched by the International Security council when they knew that they could not win the war. While I was lost in thought, an enemy tank which had probably survived, started firing at me. I thought this was the end. But I found a button labeled 'repair kit' and pressed it. The energy of the tank was revived and a box appeared with a bottle full of a mysterious potion, which I drank and felt that all my sickness was cured. I destroyed the tank and went to the gathering of people who were celebrating the success of the war. I told them all about the magical potion and that there were so many bottles in the tanks and that creating the potion was very easy for anyone. Soon, all the people had been cured of their sicknesses. I thought that the people would be very happy with me but instead, they blamed me for not making this special potion before that could have saved at least a million lives. They put me in prison. But still, I knew that in the future that now everyone is working for, would soon be dominated by corrupt and bad leaders and then they would seek help from me. So, this is not the end...

The Cure That Saved Humanity

I had to face an unforgiving reality -- I had been put in charge; I had to change the Earth and return it to normal...

There was no turning back. The Center locked me and a few other scientists into a room. They wouldn’t let us go till we find a way to save humanity. We thought we would die due to starvation or dehydration. But the Center was kind enough to send some water and a couple of slices of bread every now and then. Most of us still tried to find an exit as we knew we wouldn’t be able to produce a cure in time before the last man on Earth dies. “Eish it looks like there isn’t any exit but the front door. It would be impossible trying to escape from there. The Center must have put a bazillion guards there,” I spoke out to the other scientists. “Yeah…. You’re right. I guess our only option left now is to make a cure,” replied Bill. “We better get working then if we’re going to get it done in time,” Harry replied. “No, wait guys! I found a few rifles in this box. Looks like there are some grenades in here too.” Everyone looked towards Tim. We started to open all the pretty boxes and found a bunch of military equipment. “Hmm you guys think we can bust out the front door using what we found??” I asked them. “No I don’t think so. If I remember correctly there is a vent hidden somewhere in this room. It’s big enough for a man to fit through easily,” Bill called out. “Ah here it is, let’s burn that lock and get going.” Harry commanded us.

With that our adventure of trying to escape the Center started. Tim was the first person to go into the vent followed by me, then Harry and last but not least Bill. At first half of us thought it was a suicide mission and we would never get past the guards. The other half still kept their hopes high. To be honest crawling through the vent felt like an endless exercise and I had never crawled this much in my entire life. After hours and hours and hours of crawling we all ran out of energy. It was already midnight and nobody had the stamina to go on any longer. We decided to sleep in the vent till the sun shines on our faces. So it was not until 9 am at we woke up. There were tiny holes in the vent through which we saw some guards running into the room they locked us in. Oh snap, they were trying to find us and this time the plan was to kill us for escaping. We now crawled slower to reduce the chances of them hearing our footsteps. At last Tim saw the end of the vent. It was about time we got out of this nasty old place. “These guards are everywhere… do they ever sleep?” Tim spoke out. We waited about a quarter of an hour to see if they would go away but they didn’t.“Get the pistols loaded, there’s no other way but to take their lives away,” Tim again, and soon a private war broke out. Bullets there, bullets here. All that could be seen was the blood. We killed about 20 of them but lost Bill… his pistol failed him. He was the world’s best scientist at that time and also the highest paid scientist. I guess that’s the last we’ll hear about him.“Okay we’ve lost a man but that shouldn’t stop us. Let’s continue moving forward,” I told to the other two. “Sorry for the late arrival,” a mysterious voice called out. “Huh? Who are you,” I asked him. “No time to explain. Get in!” We had no idea who he was but at least he saved us. I don’t really like strangers but hey it was better than getting killed. “So, where are you taking us? Who are you? Why did you rescue us?” Tim questioned him and the pilot. “We’re a team know as SFH. We rescue people and you’re going to the island of Bernabus. That’s where you’ll be safe from the Center and my name is Arno. “Oh and thanks for saving us,” I spoke out. “Like I said it’s our job.” “All right, our base is just a few meters from here. Once we get there, I’ll need to ask you guys a few questions.” Arno whispered to us. “Why don’t you ask us while now?” I questioned him. “My throat is dry, I haven’t had water since we left our base in the morning,” he replied. So without any more talking we continued our journey to the base.

Arno led us to the ‘Conference Hall’ in the middle of the base. “So first of all, why did they lock you in there?” Arno started to question us. “They wanted us to make a cure to save humanity but we knew we wouldn’t be able to make one in time,” I answered. “All right, so this is no normal disease... can’t a plant be used instead? Many diseases can be cured using plants.” Arno asked another one. “No sir, there’s no plant that could ....” “Actually there could be one, the dragon flower.” Tim interrupted me while I was speaking. “Tim those don’t even exist, and even if they do, the only continent they’re found in is Antarctica. Plus its winter and the temperature is -50.0 C. No man can survive that much.” I tried to add on to Tim’s point. “Well, I’ve heard that the weather is going to get warmer by tomorrow morning. The weather forecast says it’ll decrease to -29.9 C. That’s not impossible to survive if you’re a human. It’s the only chance of saving humanity,” Arno said spoke out. “I guess you’re right and this sounds nicer than to be locked in a room till all mankind dies. So what’s the plan captain? When are we going?” Harry questioned Arno. “Hmm tomorrow at 9:00 Am sounds fine to me,” and those were Arno’s last words before he went to bed. “Good night I guess, see you in the morning Harry and Tim!” We all went to bed and it was a quiet night. “Wake up lazy pants, we got to go. Now get in the plane and let’s fly to Antarctica!”  I thought we would see some more guards sent by the Center on our flight but we didn’t what a relief. This was the most dangerous place to get hijacked and thank god it didn’t happen. Within four hours we had reached our destination. “The dragon flower isn’t easy to find it is hidden inside a cave near the edge of Antarctica. The pilot and 3 soldiers should remain here with the plane to ensure that nothing happens to it while Arno and we go find the flower,” I commanded everyone that was here. We all knew it was only a matter of time before the fuel in the plane escapes due to the intense weather. So we split into 2 groups. One group had Arno and Tim, while the other group had me and Harry. They searched near the southern end of Antarctica while we searched the northern end. Me and Harry came back to the plane empty handed; we failed to find the dragon flower. But Arno and Tim were able to find the flower. “I think this will be enough to create a cure that could actually work with this flower,” Tim spoke. “All right let’s head back to base where you guys can get to work,” Arno ordered everyone to get back into the plane. Again I found it quite surprising that we saw no guards on our way back. Maybe they gave up on us. Maybe they found some other professional scientists to get the job done or they ran out of money to afford more guards. Well whatever the reason was, at least they were not trying to kill us.

It took us an extra hour to reach at the base as the wind was flowing in the direction opposite to us. The pilot almost crashed into an iceberg but other than that, we were fine. The reporters at the base told us that the whole human race was going to end in less than 45 hours. If we wanted to save humanity, we better get to work as soon as possible. All the animals had already become extinct. A few plants were left and oxygen was hard to find. Soon the people at the base started to experience these problems too. We worked for a straight day. No sleep, no eating. The only thing we did was work on the cure and drink water. The soldiers surrounded the base and no one was allowed to enter or leave. They kept their eyes on the lookout for any guards, but none were seen. After hours and hours and hours of searching for the right mixtures, we finally found a cure that actually functions. “We did it! It works! Guys! We found the perfect cure. All that’s left now is to release it in the air and the wind would carry it across the globe in minutes!” I told the soldiers. “Great job scientists,” Arno complimented us. “Take us to the nearest mountain Arno, that’s where we’ll release the cure,” I requested him. “Hop onto my jeep and let’s get going,” Arno replied. But on the way to the mountain we say the Center’s guards. It’s like they knew our plan all along and were waiting for us to get on top of the mountain. Luckily we had brought some soldiers with us to fight back... “OPEN fire,” yelled Arno. Sadly the guards heard him and he was the first person to die. He was one of the bravest captains I had ever seen and he was ready to save the world even if it meant he would die. “Well that’s the last we’ll hear of Arno. But we didn’t stop when Bill died, and we won’t stop here either! Someone needs to save the planet and that someone is one of us. We need to eliminate the rest of them and get to the top of that mountain,” Tim encouraged us to move forward. There were men dying on both sides. This time Tim was the leading sniper and not me. I was defending the cure while he was killing everyone. Tim had done great; he killed about 30 guards before taking a bullet. We now lost another one of our most important men. “Harry take care of the cure, it’s time for me to help fight back,” I requested Harry. “Roger that,” Harry replied.

It’s about time the Center gave up trying to defeat us. We had survived all of their previous attacks and we’ll survive this last one too. I pulled off some world class shots with my sniper, killing about 13 of the 20 guards that were left. There were only 5 soldiers left on our side. I went to the place where Arno died and took his phone. I called for some more soldiers to arrive at the mountain to help us out. I dropped my rifle and when I leaned out to get it someone shot me right in my leg. I wasn’t able to move and I just stood behind a broken shield for the rest of the battle. The soldiers still fought on even without anyone leading them. They had their own mind and didn’t need anyone to tell them what to do. Harry still stood there protecting the cure and waiting for me to guide him. Once the soldiers finished off the last guard, I told Harry to go on top of the hill and open then the jar which contained the cure. “Victory at last, we have saved the human race!” Harry, who had been pretty quiet on this journey, has now cured the entire planet of this deadly disease. May this day be remembered forever!

So, basically, I'll be providing you guys a with a paragraph or two of the beginning of a 'story'. What you have to do is to continue that paragraph, writing a story based on the theme of paragraph you select. Keep all of the rules of story writing in your mind, while providing the story a end of your choice. In the very end, give your story a suitable title and publish it below.

Entries without a title will not be considered.

Wait so, I think there is a bit of contradiction. If there isn't, ignore this, but:

First, the Centre guards are trying to lock the scientists into one room so they work day and night in order to find a cure. But when these scientists finally find a cure, they are trying to stop them. Why is that? Is it because the Centre wants to save humanity from its name, that is:

*10 years later*

"Ooh, the Centre saved the humanity people, praise it".
