I used to say, "Do unto others before they have a chance to do unto you." Certainly a reversal of the Golden Rule. 

 

Now, I say: Thanks for all the things people have done for me. I can't pay you back, so I will pay it forward.

 

That's my words of wisdom: If you can't pay it back, pay it forward. 

 

People have come into my life over the years and helped me in ways, I now feel, I didn't deserve. I was such an A-hole. But now, because of them, I'm a better person. These people are no longer in my life and have no idea how much they have helped me. I vowed I would pay them back by paying it forward by helping others who are truly in need. 

You and I seem to be on the same page.
