Hello again, forumer, and welcome to the Amateur Writing Sections latest writing contest: The Amateur Writing Tournament!

What is it, you say? Well, here's a handy guide to get you started.

The way it works is this. Each week, we will provide a different challenge, or topic, for you writers to write for. In the case of a challenge, you must write an article of a specified length, within the conditions given. This will range from things like the kinds of words allowed to including a specific word in every sentence of the article.

We aim to provide a new challenge or topic every week, and each week the three best entries will be rewarded with points, and the best one will receive a crystal reward. Amateur Writing Club members will have their points added to the Amateur Writing League standings, and will be eligible for the rewards granted by ranking up within the League. At the end of the series of challenges, the writers with the highest amount of total points will be rewarded with crystals, regardless of whether they are AWC members or not.

The challenges will rise in difficulty each week, but the rewards will also be boosted to make it worth your while.

This contest is open to ALL forum members, but only Amateur Writing Club members will have their points added to the AWC League.

A special thanks goes out to @kaisdf, who came up with the idea for this style of tournament. He will also be helping us to run and rate entries.

This topic will be updated each week with each new challenge and current standings, so check back on it for progress reports!

The Top Five entries can be seen here.

Challenge, Week One: "The end and the beginning" [Completed, results released]

Write us a paragraph, on anything, but with one condition; every sentence has to begin and end with the same letter.

For example: “They went in search of somewhere to spend the night”.

The paragraph itself should be within 100 to 200 words in length, and have at least 10 sentences. Remember that gibberish won’t win you any prizes, so make sure that your writing makes sense, and that the paragraph has a point. Feel free to give your paragraph a title, if you wish to do so.

Challenge, Week Two: "Everyone knows their B, C, D's..." [Completed, results released]

Your challenge for this weeks is to write us a paragraph, of 140 - 150 words, without using the letter "a" anywhere in it. This means that nowhere within the paragraph can the letter "a" be included, whether in capital (A), or simple (a) form.

FAQ

-No, you cannot substitute the number "4" for the letter "a".
-No, you cannot use the letter "a" on it's own to write things like "There is a tree over there." Use something like "There is some sort of tree over there", instead.
-No, you cannot shorten words with "a" in them by simply taking them out. These will not be considered valid.

An example sentence:

"I left the room, rejoicing in my recovery, opening my eyes to the incredible life before me."

As before, please remember to give the paragraph meaning, since random sentences bodged together won't cut it. You may give it a title, if you would like to.

Challenge, Week Three: “Wonderfully Weird” [Completed, results released]

In this challenge, you will need to draw on your writing skills. What you need to do is to come up with something absolutely ridiculous - the weirder the better - and then persuade us that it’s really a brilliant idea, that should be carried out at all costs. This could be an idea, a product, a Death Star...whatever takes your fancy!

An example idea/ topic: “Weaponized turtles - The latest and greatest innovation in weapons technology!”

Have you ever been stuck in a battlefield?

Have you ever been stuck in a battlefield with a river in it?

Have you ever been stuck in a battlefield with a river in it with the river between you and the enemy?

If you have, then the latest product from the TotallyNotBogus weapons development team will blow your mind! (Literally as well, for just $69.69).

Combining the concepts of explosive devices and carrier pigeons, our team created an explosives pack that can fit on the back of the average turtle! All you have to do is catch one, clip on the eZY-fit device to program the target into its mind, and send it on its way with its explosive payload on its back.

But wait, there's more! The explosive device will not damage the turtles shell, so it can be re-used! This return-to-sender module can be purchased separately for a special price of $999 per item. Alternatively, the turtle can also be set free after being turned into a mass-murderer, which will totally increase its hunting skills, thus making you a valuable and conscious contributor to the Turtle Welfare Club!*

Weaponized Turtles - Your best option in a battlefield with a river in it with the river between you and the enemy!

*The Turtle Welfare Club is a subsidy of TotallyNotBogus weapons developments. The company will not be held liable for injuries caused to turtles through the usage of this product.

Adding a title is optional, but is very welcome. Humour, whether dry or loud, is a definite plus. Most importantly however, make sure that your argument is well thought out enough to convince us.

Word limit: 250 - 300 words, but we may make allowances for shorter or longer articles.

Challenge, Week Four: “Something's different...” [Completed, results released]

We all have a movie or a book that we love. Usually, other people love it as well. But what if it was about something completely different?

Your task in this challenge is to create a parody of the title of a book or a movie(preferably well known, so that you’re understood) and to then write a description of what happens in it, like the descriptions found on the back of books or movies.

For example: “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Hide Them”
Join your fabulously underprepared hero, Newt Scamander, as he frantically searches for places in which to hide his ever-growing collection of mostly terrifying, hard to find magical beasts from the tender mercies of the wizarding world. He will have to use all of his wits in this, the greatest game of hide-and-seek that the world has ever seen(or a really big Easter egg hunt). Look out for that man-giant, the wonderfully hairy Rubeus Hagrid, as he joins Newt and says things that he shouldn’t have said! Coming to a theatre near you never, because our writer is terrible, we’re firing him soon.

Word Limit: 100 - 150 words, but as usual exceptions may be made at our discretion.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this Tournament, and again to @kaisdf for keeping everything running smoothly! We'll see you again soon with more of this, so look out for that!

Now that's a challenge.

Can we post our entries in AWS too?

You can, but it really isn't worth it since it isn't a story or a series. Also, the length won't be enough to justify approving it.

How many months is this tournament possible to last?

For now, the plan is to run this one for four weeks, since it's a whole new concept. After this is finished, based on community interest, we may make them longer.

Tweezers, how long should it take before I'm officially added into the AWC?

If you PMed the application already to it's rightful place, it should take about a day.

Its been more than a month since my application was accepted, but not added to the lists or anything.

Oh wait, I just checked and my name is there.

You had to send your Skype along with the application in order to be added to the group chat. We also have an unofficial discord channel, although I hired an assassin to kill Twee, after which I will take over and make it official covfefe PM and I will add you there :)

Is it possible to write this in the format of a poem?

Yep.
