[Issue 78] Give A Speech!

Your team is barely hanging together after 8 hours of being relentlessly crushed. Can you motivate them?

 

 

You and seven friends of yours decided to play a battle. The beginning of the battle was filled with lots of flags being captured, but as the time grew old, so did your temperament. It has been 8 hours since you started the battle, and you are losing. Fortunately, you have a new member on your team who is quite promising and may lead you to victory. Nevertheless, most of your team is barely hanging in the match. As their friend, it is your job to motivate them.

 

Your task is to write a speech to motivate your fellow tankers and ultimately lead them and yourself to victory.

 

To make things organized, we have a set of rules. Please read them before participating!

 

1. You may only submit an entry from 1 account. Submission from multiple accounts will lead to a ban from participation in future Newspaper contests.

2. NO copying or plagiarism is allowed. As reporters, we are familiar with various kinds of literature and movies. As such, if we believe that your speech is plagiarized, you will immediately be removed from the contest.

3. All entries are to be posted in this topic, under a spoiler. Any entries not posted this topic shall not be considered.

4. Other rules that may apply.

 

Now for the part you will probably read before the contest:

1st place:  50 000 crystals
2nd place: 40 000 crystals
3rd place:  35 000 crystals
 
Any players who win a consolation prize for having a good speech will receive 7500 crystals.

^I'm not talking about an actual contest, mind you, nor am I saying such a contest actually exists.

 

Secondly, as Royal asked, is there a word limit or are we free to write a speech longer than Hunted: Chapter 3?

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.

But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.

In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check — a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God's children.

It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.

But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.

We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. They have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone.

As we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back. There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?" We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. We can never be satisfied, as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their selfhood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating "For Whites Only". We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.

I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.

Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.

I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

This is our hope. This is the faith that I go back to the South with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with a new meaning, "My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring."

And if America is to be a great nation this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!

Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!

Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California!

But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!

Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!

Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

Hey, I do wanna know the difference between Plagiarism and Copying.

Plagiarism (in the context of this contest) is copy pasting completely from somewhere, whereas I define Copying to be taking 80% or so of the content of a pre-existing speech and adding some extra things into it.

Would doing a parody count as a violation of rule 2, even if we explicitly concede that we're doing a parody?

 

I'm afraid so. I realize that it would technically classify as your own content, but even still you'd be using the original as the skeleton of your parody.

That's fine, but as a general rule of thumb, please don't use anything that "you wouldn't say in front of your grandma" (for the sake of this example, I mean a typical grandma who does take offense to obsecneties). In a nutshell, any profanity must be very light in nature. I know that this might be a difficult to work with, but if you wish to see examples of speeches without swearing, consider viewing LOTR. I'm not advising you to just write down Aragorn's speech, but if you need somewhere to get an idea of how to go, that is a decent place to start.

We are members of an unbeatable team, If we give up, we might not have this opportunity ever again! Look at the new person he's holding his own on the battle-field pretty well, if we do the same then we WILL be able to win this battle, look at us, it's just a one flag difference. If!, We drop out than we won't get the prize so lets oil those tanks and get moving. When we work together we are stronger than ALL of the tanki players. If only we believe in ourselves, then can we only gain victory. Think about them winning! It leaves a bitter taste in your mouth, right? So, we must go on, get them to surrender, We WILL push harder to win this final battle. Think about all the fame we'll get when we win, think about the prizes. Only when we work together as one, can we achieve new limits. Now we are just going onto the battle-field by ourselves, but When we're together we'll give them a defeat that they'll never forget. At first, we must win, then can you groan about ur k/d. We aren't going down without a fight! Who's with me! Now let's get up and drive into glory, We will massacre them!ATTACK!

 Right about now, the point count is not exactly even, we had a good start and blew it, now I've organized a halftime break with the enemy team to give you a bit of an enlightening, so listen up and Be Seated, . . . This glorious battlefield was once our glorious battlefield, and the enemy tanks, where their future coffins, and our tanks, where our instruments of victory. Alas, as time moves on like it does for most things, we grow weary, and so has the enemy. Though they have coffee. Now a few of you will leave this memorable place with a bad K/D, or maybe not the most honorable amount of score, a lot of people live off of those two things, score, and K/D, but I am here to tell you this, every tanker is scared of losing one, or both those things, and anyone who tells you different is a damned liar. But a real hero of the team fights for the glory of the team, and not to their personal best, that's why they call a team... A team, we must live, fight, sleep, and need it be, die... As a team, this "personal hero" stuff is a load of horse poo, we have the best equipment, and spirits in the world, in fact, I pity the poor buggers who we will destroy in a minute, If we can keep moving, and be advancing as a team, a win is a sure shoo-in, but we will only win it by fighting, and showing the red team we have more guts than they will have or will Ever have and don't be afraid of pushing too hard, the harder we go, the more kills we get, and who wants to stop that? The enemy does, so don't just shoot the poor sods, we're going to rip and twist their freaking treads out, and use them as an extra layer of armor, slap them with it, and burn em' when we're done. Might be a bit brutal, but name a time where you won a battle with kindness, I'll wait. . . It's almost time to get back out there, so if you remember one thing, its to have each other's backs, and to push yourselves as a team, then once you reached the limit of what you are capable of, you break your limit down and push some more!  All right, you sons-of-guns, I'm proud to call you a team, and be a part of it, dismissed.

I know you're tired and it's been a long battle. But we are not far from the end, so don't quit now. That other team may be on amphetamines and caffeine products, but who cares? There's enough time for us to inch closer and closer. And the closer we get to matching them on the scoreboard, the more nervous they will become and a better chance for them to lose confidence and screw up. If we can get that last swing of momentum on our side we have a good chance of winning this thing, and if we do - I will buy a shop kit or 50 containers for each one of you on this team! Yes, even the new guy! So let's get ready to serve the biggest ass-kicking comeback in the history of everything!!!!

Dreams

 

The wind hisses, laughing at our effort to haul our rust-ridden tanks forward, not even given time to search for solace as we're heartlessly murdered, again and again. It tickles, it chills, it sneers. I see that some of us are questioning, if our cause is really worth all this. Enemies swarm us, and even though we somehow find the energy to respawn, to resurrect, I know that our will to continue is fading. I am here to tell you, not even I am bereft of these feelings. I also want to leave this world of chaos, to tell you guys my final, last words of goodbye. Because I, I don't want to relive my failures, my disappointments, my anxiety, my sadness, my frustration, and my pain as I'm beaten down again and again.

 

They don’t understand what we have to go through, how we have to cross rivers miles wide, how we had to climb self-aware mountains that try to knock us down at every ledge. They don’t understand, that when they have a luxury, first-class airplane, we have to suffer, we have to brave the waters, the weather, and the terrain, as miniscule, tiny insects. We're just pests to those not on our side, and when we killed ourselves off on purpose, they thought, “Good riddance.”

 

But, there's also one other thing they don't understand.

 

We have a dream.

 

And not just one. We have the hopes and dreams of our people, behind us, pushing us through all this, to assist us, to guide us, to show us the way, the path to victory. Because history is written by the winners, and we were meant to make history. We were meant to write history.

 

I’m not writing this last, cheesy conclusion, on purpose. I'm not some apathetic motivational speaker to speak a few empty words to try and get you to sacrifice yourselves one more time. I am here with you. I know what you, what we, are going through. Trust me, there will always be light at the end of the tunnel. And although I cannot say for certain when we will finally reach that light, and I also cannot guarantee that our path won't be filled with pain and suffering, I can guarantee that we are on the right path, and that we are on the path to victory.
