for our wedding anniversary my wife bought me something i have always wanted

a genuine japanese katana sword

this is known as a tiger elite katana

hand forged and folded many times 

and a differentially hardened cutting edge which means the cutting edge is harder than the rest of the blade

its done by covering the blade in clay and leaving the edge showing then heating to a very high temperature

and quenching in a cold water trough which also causes the blade to bend into the katana shape

it is then meticlously hand polished which takes weeks of work and produces the beautiful edge known as the hamon

all the other parts are then hand made to finish the sword

including the hand wrapped handle

and the wooden handmade saya or sheath which holds the sword

a true work of art

and incredibly sharp

well this will give you an idea just how sharp and powerful a katana is

tameshigiri is test cutting with a katana

using rolled up matting to simulate human body parts such as arms and legs
