Let's discuss cars

Hey,

Being a hardcore car-guy, I am very tempted to know how many petrolheads do we have on this community?.

Do you own a car? When did you purchase your very first car? Have you ever worked on a car's mechanical parts? Have you ever popped the hood?

Let's begin

(Pardon me if there is already a similar thread created before, if there is any kindly merge this with the existing one)

The first car I purchased was a 1954 English Ford. It was a 3 speed stick and the transmission wasn't synchronized. It had a 4 banger aluminum engine. Top speed was 55 mph. Going up a steep hill would have been faster if I got out and pushed. With all its faults, I loved that little car. My Dad took the engine out to rebuild it. An arson set his shop on fire and part of the engine had begone to melt.

Before the advent of on-board computers, I was a shade tree mechanic. I did all the repair work on my trucks. The only time any of my vehicles ended up in the shop was because of blown caskets, replenish the Freon (I didn't have the equipment to do that) and to grind down the disk brakes and replace the calipers.

In one of the trucks, I managed to strip and bust up a couple spider gears. My brother accused me of hot rodding (fast starts, speed shifting, anything that puts undue stress on the gears). "Who ME!?. Not ME. I don't know how to do any of that stuff." His answer was, "Then you loaned it out to someone who did." He knew darn good and well that I would never loan my vehicle to anyone. B-U-S-T-E-D. We worked together on it. It took us an entire day (time wise) and 2 days of waiting for parts. Neither of us knew what we were doing. I had to buy a mechanic's manual.

When vehicles came out with on-board computers, I began to hear some horrible stories from other shade tree mechanics about how they or someone they knew had ruined vehicles because they didn't understand how the computers worked. They worked on vehicles as they had always done, which did not agree with the computers.

A friend of mine and I started up a business repairing and restoring antique and classic cars. If the mechanics was completely shot, we cannibalized the body and sold it at antique / classic swap meets.

;Two cars I had a lot of "fun" restoring was a 1929 Model T and a 1945 Jeep. Of course there were others we restored, but those two were a big challenge. A friend of ours completely rebuilt from the ground up a 193(2?) V-12 Cadillac. It took him a little over 3 years. Highly polished (lacquer?) black paint with real chrome accoutrements.

My first car was a 2008 1.8L Ford Focus in a very dreary Sea blue colour which I bought off my friend for about £850 - bought this in 2016.

However, it barely lasted 2 years with me due to the following reasons:

  • The turbo blew out on the way home one day from work, had to keep restarting it cause from that point on it went into limp mode if you revved it too hard. I blame my...how should I say this...large friends for being in the car when I was going up a steep hill.
  • The EGR (on diesel cars such as this it's a valve which allows air to be recycled rather than going straight out the exhaust) seized up with carbon build up and eventually ruined the car.
  • The alternator finally died due to the cold on the way to work on a winter's morning, I lost all electrical equipment in the car (including the power steering) - was a bit of a fun experience.

It's still sat outside my drive currently until I get around to breaking it/scrapping it. In the meantime I've bought myself a facelifted Audi A3 (it's only 1.6L though) in black and she's pretty nice, if a little costly to repair.

What I'd really like is one of the older (pre 2000) Toyota Celica GT4s to be a hobby car, but I can't justify getting one at the minute. Will probably trade my A3 in next year and get an S3, once I can afford the insurance. Need something with a bit more power!

I dont own a car, but if I could own a car, it would either be a Skyline GTR

TOPRANK GLOBAL | Find top quality used cars from our stock

Or a 1957 Ford Mainline, because I spent like 300 hours playing Mafia 2 and the atmosphere, cars and the 50's culture just got me!

57 Ford | Hemmings | Classic cars muscle, Cars usa, Ford fairlane

Imagine driving this in a modern city :D
