The Best of the Amateur Writing Section - 2019

Every year, we reporters have a tradition of taking pieces from the AWS and then copy-pasting it straight into our articles, thus committing copyright infringement time and time again.

Wait, what?

Alright, let's get straight to the point. The best of the 2019 AWS - no nonsense, made of the best of the others. Unlike @Flexoo last year, we won't be splitting this list up into categories, but rather telling you about each of these individual pieces and why we thought they deserve the win. Just because these authors win doesn't mean that they get nothing in return - each of them will be getting 50,000 crystals added to their crystal balance soon in the future.

So. Let's begin, shall we?

Thank You Maf

by @ILiveOnTheChatBox123

@Tidebreaker: First up, Thank You Maf. If you've been up to date on the AWS for the past year, then this work needs no introduction. What it might lack in length, it definitely makes up for in creativity. All of this makes sense why it's one of, if not the most, viewed pieces in the 2019 AWS. It has a little bit of everything in it, and just the right amounts of it too. I can assure you that this small yet great piece will help you get settled in and comfortable with poetry, regardless of your past poetry class experiences. What can I say, ChatBox? You didn't even have to break a sweat to make it here!

@Person_Random: Chatbox provides a token of appreciation for one of our most dedicated helpers - @Maf - in playful verse, which was certainly entertaining. Not only did I change from a poem-hater (due to some sort of terrible life experience) to a fan of the form of art, I've also been inspired to pen a few verses of my own. I'm impressed by the poetic talent and fun rhyme scheme, which definitely is well showcased in this poem as well as many others by Chatbox. Overall, it's a great poem that spreads infectious joy and gratitude, something we all desire.

The Leaky Mult #4 - October 2019

by @Merovingian

@Person_Random: Hilarious as always. There's so much detail all the while being extremely humorous - something that's on par with the top-notch pieces in the Dictator. Merovingian brings along the best insider information presented in a very unique design, making it a cut above many other humor titles. It's definitely a contender for the top prizes, if not the very best humor pieces on the Tanki Online Forum.

@Tidebreaker: Although it was my first time ever reading the Leaky Mult, I genuinely enjoyed it due to the sheer amount of creativity and humor Merovingian put in it. And I mean, just look at the size of it - not only does it put most Newspaper articles to shame, but it would probably make even the one and only @GoldRock blush. Just because it's long doesn't mean it only has nonsense in there - it has a lot of info and a lot of laughs. In the end, I only felt that it was fair to reward good effort with a spot on this list, so congratulations, Merovingian.

RIDDLER_8: Re-interviewed!

by @Initiate

@Tidebreaker: I personally had the pleasure of working with Init in other projects, which is why when I saw this, I was quite excited. Before his abrupt departure from the Tanki community, he was on track to become an eSports reporter (directly competing against our team here ?), which is why I didn't really see this coming. Nevertheless, the interview itself was very well laid out and quite a fun read, gaining some traction straight from the start. So, if you want to find out more about the mysterious @RIDDLER_8, dive straight into the interview!

@Person_Random: An excellent interview and definitely one of the best we've seen in a while. If you're looking for some fun facts about a great and mysterious tanker, look no further - this interview has got you covered! Initiate's conversational style and perfect transitions make it even better on top of @RIDDLER_8's stash of stories and experiences to tell, so definitely go and give it a read!

Drown

by @Lose

@Person_Random: Definitely one of the best emotional pieces, maybe even the one that turned Lose's AWS career onto a new track. For me, I've had various mental health problems that started during high school, and many people have just turned me away and ignored me because I was upset over things that they didn't think made sense. This piece really meant a lot for me, and I'm sure it was one of the most relatable and descriptive poems that we've read. Whether you're feeling good or down in the dumps, you can find solace in this emotional verse.

@Tidebreaker: Drown was a piece which went above and beyond describing tough times. It not only did so in poetry, but just in that sensation of punching you straight in the gut with that emotion of pure desperation. The first time I read it, I was utterly shocked. Like Random, I've had problems of my own, so Drown automatically meant a lot for me. The way that Lose wrote this piece was not only powerful and captivating, but also just simply nothing short of masterful. If you've ever wanted to see an example of pure mastercraft, then look no further than this. Please, just read it. You won't leave the piece the same person you once were before you started reading it.

TWNC (Summer Edition)

by @pythor20000

@Person_Random: The TWNC strikes back! We really enjoyed how this series always covers the latest Tanki News and ties them together with weather events (though with a great Tanki twist). Readers, if you haven't read the TWNC, definitely go and take a look at this great episode. We think you'll love reading about the current state of Tanki as well as the weather forecast. Shameless Advertisement: The TWNC returns in the Tanki Online Newspaper, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for that!

@Tidebreaker: This was my first time reading the TWNC, and I'm not kidding when I say that I loved every second of it. Not only was it filled to the brim with imagination, but I mean, come on. Pythor even made his own advertisements featuring major people in Tanki! All in all, I just can't stop smiling when I read it time and time again - it's just intoxicating. It also has some of the most simplistic yet beautiful formatting that I've seen in my time on the Forum. This ended up being a major part of Pythor's Newspaper application later on, and let's just say that with this kind of content, he knocked it out of the park with absolute ease.

The Story of Lucky and Pumpkin (Chapter 1)

by @Cyber2_O.o

@Person_Random: An awesome start to a playful and eventful series. As @kaisdf mentioned, it is definitely interesting to see a story from a new perspective (of a newborn cardinal, in this case), and it amounts to a series with serious potential. The plot is extremely engaging, the details give a sense of life as a bird, and the dialogue is perfectly placed. Go ahead and take a look at this series. We guarantee you'll be hooked by the end of the first chapter.

@Tidebreaker: The #1 thing which struck me about this piece was that it wasn't only from an interesting perspective, but also also had great and lovable protagonists. The first chapter really thrusts you into the heart of the story, and you feel that you know the characters as if they were old friends from many years before - that there was something familiar about them, even though you know that this is a new tale. It shows all the internal conflicts of the protagonist before its inevitable climax, something which was both ironic given that the protagonist's name was Lucky, and also shocking due to how quickly things went south. I can't post the whole series here, but I highly recommend you read the rest of the storyline!

Challenges: Conquered

by @Person_Random

@Tidebreaker: Unfortunately, I couldn't allow Random take this one due to the fact that he would show it off by putting it in bold, italic, and underline. I will tell you this, though. When we faced off against each other in the Guide Maker contest, my strategy was to quite literally give readers an entire book to digest and use to become better with Shaft. Random did the exact same thing about Challenges, but in roughly five times less the word count. If that doesn't tell you how good his piece is, I really don't know what will. Even after one year, this guide is still very relevant and opens an insight into how make Challenges as easy as possible, especially with an even shorter timeframe. While I definitely wasn't salty that Random won back then, I look back in retrospect today to see that mine wasn't even close to his as far as quality went. So good job, buddy.

@Person_Random: Stay tuned for an even shorter, quicker, more concise guide, coming soon to theatres. Random out.

Mr. Nibbles and Nihon - A Tanki Love Story

by @Mr.Nibbles

@Tidebreaker: Oh, boy. (Some background information in the spoiler below)

Spoiler

Last year, when I was making the ascension from Major to Generalissimo (and still had the noobish-as-hell nickname thetankinator47), I happened to run into a tanker called Nihon (once Ms.Haii), with the good old Viking-Twins combo. I don't know what it was - the MM algorithm, probably - but we saw each other quite often and just had fun. And well, let's just say that Nihon was one of the only people in MM who astounded me by how well she worked in a team. To my surprise, I later found a topic about Nihon, fresh in the AWS, written by Mr.Nibbles (once Troop10_RTL), and I was shocked to know that there was this much depth about Nihon. I approved it and then went on to talk to Mr. Nibbles (who I still remain friends with to this day). Unfortunately, I fell out of contact the same way that Nibbles eventually did at some point in the summer.

What can I say about the story? It's not only laid out extremely well, but reminds you that there will be moments in life where you can actually find love (eventhoughinthiscaseitwasagainsttankirulessomrnibblescouldhavebeenpunished). It's heartwarming to read, especially if your life seems bleak (exactly like in Drown), and makes a smile of kindness appear on your face. Because of this, it's really nothing short of a story that fills you with a glimmer of hope. All things considered, this isn't a love story that inevitably separated Nihon and Nibbles, but really a love story that brought them together and left a half of their heart in each other. Now this is truly storytelling at its finest.

@Person_Random: One of the most touching stories. The detailed description of events and the natural course of life that happened through this time really enhance this amazing love story even more. When I stopped by the AWS during that summer, I was glad to read it over and over again after weeks of grueling SAT prep, as the brilliant story always reminded me to believe in myself and aspire for something better, not only in Tanki but in life. If you're feeling down, then we've got the perfect story for you - this heartwarming tale will light a new fire of hope and inspiration in you.

Molly's - Chapter 20 [Tankiverse Fanfic]

by @Hippin_in_Hawaii

@Person_Random: I have to say, this is one of the greatest Tanki story series to this day, and this final chapter does not disappoint. Hippin has a way with characters and words that few can match, and this talent shines through in every chapter of Molly's - but especially in this final chapter. Though I was a bit busy to keep up with the first few chapters, when I took a look at this last chapter, I just had to binge-read the entire series, all the way from the first chapter, and follow the eventful journey from start to finish. As a fan of these engaging Tankiverse tales, I am eagerly hoping for a sequel to this series in the Newspaper to see what happens next.

@Tidebreaker: I won't beat around the bush - like Random, I too think that this one of the best Tanki storylines to date. The characters worked excellently and the pacing is fantastic. While I do think that the ending is a bit abrupt, I do have to admire Hippin for leaving the rest up to the reader's imagination. A long-running series always deserves a satisfying finale, and Hippin delivered perfectly. Unfortunately, I can't give the whole series the cake as the rest of it was written before 2019, like in the case of Lucky and Pumpkin. Does that stop me recommending Molly's? No. I highly recommend this series to the reader who's willing to see a good example of an expansive and fleshed-out storyline, because it was truly crafted with time, care, and pride - hence making it an obvious pick for the best of the 2019 AWS.

Congratulations to all the winners, and a sincere thanks to all of you for your contributions to the Amateur Writing Section. Keep up the good work!

Welp, it appeared the story I wrote that technically broke the rules brought me some fame and good feedback... ?

Thank you very much for the kind words on my piece, and just know: I am now motivated to start writing in this section frequently!

Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you for all of your creative contributions (they are always great reads when I am bored or feeling down). I hope everyone continues to write, and maybe become a Newspaper Reporter someday!

When we thought that all hope was lost... @Tidebreaker and @Person_Random came to the rescue to quench our thirst for rewards and our crave for recognition and mult fame ?, but mostly the crystals bits.
Congo the exceptional writers, who braved the white page syndrome and come up with really good texts.

Congratulations all 2019 AWS writers, winners or not. It's crazy when you actually think about what we are... a writing community in an online game. This is completely unique and unmatched by any other gaming community. I hope everyone continues to glean inspiration and put their ideas down on paper. May the AWS thrive in 2020 like never before!
