Moderator lamentations (English) ;-)

I’ve just been “promoted” to Forum Moderator along with having cheered you up as a chat Mod. I extend my thanks to you who’ve whined, complained, caterwauled and wailed regarding my observance and requirement of players to observe Tanki rules. I’ll learn this job as I learned any I’ve accepted, but I felt it fit ‘n’ fair to bloviate a bit as my first foray into the forum as a Mod.

First, foremost, the rules are available to every player for every account. When players sign on to Tanki,, they agree by presumed consent to those rules. Some Tankmen/women spend far more time attempting to circumvent rules and negotiate violations than to simply read and follow the rules. This is a fool’s enterprise, frankly. It earns no crystals, experience or respect. Do you play the game to advance and/or win, or are you here because it’s your only avenue to chat? If it’s to chat, there are better options with no rules in chat clients around cyberspace.

Some think Mods exercise authority due to a Caesar complex, drunk with power and delighted to exercise prejudice. That’s foolish and wrong. Mods love the game, and most would rather play than moderate. However Mods want the game to continue as the creators intended. It’s to be a friendly environment for all ages who care to play. As for me, I take no pleasure in banning anyone. I’d prefer to see all enjoying themselves without interference from crudes, lewds and buffons. Paying to play supports the project and assures it will continue. Good for those who choose to pay! Paying, however, entitles none to violate rules. Also mods are moderated by Administrators, and they’re taken to task, even dismissed, if they fail to moderate in accord with Tanki rules.

The English chat (American and English speaking folks) is burdened with profanity and vulgarity as well as violations that are plainly stupid. Flooding, for example, flies in the face of intent. You want persons to enter your match? Post that. Flood, and you earn a ban; your links are cleaned (removed) and you can’t make a game till your ban expires. How is this sensible? (Rhetorical question. It’s not sensible.) Likely you’ve no idea how often I receive PM’s and comments in chat from the many who appreciate what the Mods do. Good, honorable, mannerly and respectful players like the game to proceed civilly as the developers intend. If you’ve ever seen the film, “Roadhouse,” you may recall a conversation between Dalton, Swayze’s character, and the staff. He pointed out that nobody likes to head out for a good time and have to dodge thugs, bullies, bums and scumbags. People like to go where they can have a good time without thinking about having to fight their ways in or out of an establishment or endure what slobs bring to the moment. It’s the same thing in the net world, unless, of course, you’re a masochist, sadist or some other version of human twisty-tie. Well, folks, we intend to make and keep Tanki a civil place for all, any ages, to enjoy. Twisty-ties might search for their preferred garbage bag to which to attach. If one must roll in sewage, there’s always Skype and sites like that to use with no moderation at all.

I earned the rank of Marshall before I ever considered being a Mod. I was never, ever banned, not once. Was that difficult? Hardly. It was appropriate for me as a guest in another group’s game. There exist, worldwide, rules of hospitality. Manners. Your time in the game will be far more enjoyable when you observe the rules then when you don’t. It won’t raise one objection from Mods or Admin, either. I promise. Play on! Play hard! Play fairly, and deport yourself like the man/woman you hope to become or are. Don’t? Well, societies have tickets, summonses, jails, penitentiaries and similar concepts for those “who don’t play well with others.” Tanki has the ban hammer, and Mods will apply it for those who simply can’t/won’t follow those simple, clear rules.

I was not bragging nor soliciting congrats. Thanks anyway, fsd. i was intending to attempt a short lesson, some teaching, in hopes that those who don't read (Har!) might catch a clue. I'm unsure it merits thanks, Sal. One thing I've learned about moderating is that it is lots of work. It'd be less if players followed pretty simple, clear rules. But! There are those I.Q and maturity issues which, sadly, will always be a part of cyber-play. "So it goes." [billy Pilgrim via Kurt Vonnegut]

I have to admit: we have enough forum moderators, we do not need another. However, MadDog21 certainly deserves this kind of role, even if it is just a puppet, as a present for all of his good work in making us lesser mortals have more sensible mindsets towards moderation and noobity. So thank you Tanki administration for bestowing this honour on MadDog, and thank you MadDog for this extremely helpful thread.
