@Moderators, What is necroposting?

 Share

Recommended Posts

I remember making a thread about this few years back and discussing this; would like a review

The act of posting in a forum thread that is too old to matter any more, or has served it's purpose.
Usually by new, inexperienced members of the board.

Obviously, bumping a thread just for the sale of bumping is against the rules, but;

  • Is it against the rules to bump a thread for further discussion?
  • Is it against the rules to bump a thread to share your opinion on the discussion that was happening?
  • If so, why aren't threads automatically locked after a pre-set amount of time? (the feature is present)

When exactly does necroposting become a ban-able offense? If necro-posting in all forms are ban-able then do we make a new thread every time we want to talk about an old topic?

TL;DR: Some people make new threads about old topics because they are afraid of getting banned for necroposting.

I think that, once a mod or consultant said if they ask for permission to bump, they can bump it to discuss, unless they just ask for fun.

Like the Jokers in the chat and forum topic, I remembered seeing it, it got old and went back into pages, I forgot name of that topic, I asked on Question and Answers and then someone ( I think was staff) said "Good topic, please bump it" or something, so someone quoted that post and bumped that topic, without ban.

^Yep same with the Introductions thread. I messaged a mod and he bumped it since the last post was like late 2012.

If a player finds a thread interesting and the last post is more than 3 months old I guess it is safe to first ask a mod and then bump. Your 3rd point is the most interesting. I wondered the same thing. Is there a feature for the system to do it auto of do mods have to manually do go and lock topics? If the mods have to do it, I guess the problem is we have few mods and too many threads to keep track of?

It's the norm in many forums, old threads get automatically closed and moved to Archive. If a thread is in archive the users can just make a new one and link to the archived thread for reference of discussion.

Is it against the rules to bump a thread for further discussion? No, it's not. If a subject can still be discussed, it is allowed.

Is it against the rules to bump a thread to share your opinion on the discussion that was happening? This one is a bit more difficult. If there was a topic about some discount 1 year ago and you post something like WOW this discount was awesome, obviously you will get a ban.

If so, why aren't threads automatically locked after a pre-set amount of time? (the feature is present) Technical limitations. Now all the threads that were inactive for 2 months will be moved to archive (we are currently looking into the possibility of making it automatically).

Thanks Sem for the answer.

Advo? I know you've been on many other forums,

what are the rules there actually? Or is every tread that's inactive just locked and archived?

Most active forums have threads that cannot be posted in after a few weeks, some even have features where only the OP can bump threads - where as in some the OP can also lock his own thread.

Can I just ask an extra question regarding this point? Apologies for the bump, dont want to create an extra topic.

This topic is among many of the same type of topics that have not been closed. http://en.tankiforum.com/index.php?showtopic=181404 I posted the following:

Is that all you can find?

Dupe alert 1

Dupe alert 2

Dupe alert 3

Dupe alert 4

Dupe alert 5

Dupe alert 6

I think its a disgrace all these topics don't just get sourced back to the original "Interesting Nicknames" thread. Why constantly flood the forum with new topics??   :mellow: You probably can find the explanation behind my name in at least two of those dupe topics. Please, oh please...

After my post, people continued posting their name explanations, including one person who said that they posted in that topic "because we get banned for reopening an old topic".

I want to ask:
-Is that really the situation?

Do we not have the ability to post on old topics because we will get banned, and rather use a new topic to discuss something that has been discussed millions of times before on a different topic. Wopuld it not be far more useful if everyone used the same topic to post their name explanations? Rather than searching over 6 different topics to find everyone's explanations, you could just look through one single one.

I would like to see all these "dupe topics" closed, and sourced back to the original topic. I don't understand the logic behind constantly creating new topics with the same title to avoid "bumping old topics".

Opinions? I know you can't +1 me, but if you agree, do say so. If you disagree, please say why.

Certainly it is better to use existing topic instead of creating a new one. However, quite soon all the topics that weren't commented for 2 months will be moved (automatically or manually be mods) to Archive. Perhaps topics like that should be bumped.

When a discussion is not updated for days and days, we tend to regard it as "dead", because there are other ones that are active at the time.

If you find a thread the last post in which is dated more than a month ago, it means that it is dead, and you can comment in it ONLY to make an important contribution to the discussion, or to clarify a fundamental question that has not been clarified.

This is prohibited because it is just like spam, which is a message just to increase the count of your messages or to waste time;

After all, if a topic has not been touched for months, it is no longer of any relevance and there is no reason to return to it.
