Who uses WASD instead of the Arrow Keys?

Recommended Posts

Just curious, because most Tankers use the Arrow keys I suppose?

Started with the Arrow keys also, because first I was unaware of the alternative WASD in Tanki.

I already played and play some PC-games with WASD and I believe it 's more the standard in PC games.

WASD combined with the mouse in the right hand is very common in PC-games.

So I decided very early to switch to WASD: which was quite hard for a while and

probably very funny and rewarding for my opponents!

Glad I did it though, because I am really glad with the closely grouped keycombinations I use now.

I do not have to "travel" anymore along the keyboard:

For the turret I use < > with my right hand.

When using the cameraview QE with my left hand I can simultaneously rotate the turret

and get a good overview of the battlefield.

With my lefthand I use WASD and for the cameraview QE:

Ringfinger A+Q, Middlefinger W+S and Indexfinger D+E

With my ringfinger I also push Tab (a lot) and with my indexfinger I "drop the Flag".

My left thumb is for shooting, but you could do it with the right thumb too.

At Goldbox time I just push simultaneously the 2,3 and 4 with the same three fingers.

Also those "drug keys" are at close reach.

Keyboard layout: the most used keys are outlined, the less used have a tiny circle on them.

Red is left hand, Blue is right hand.

What do you use and why does it work well for you?

I've never tried it, and I don't think I would be good at it because I'm so used to the conventional set up now, but it seems like a good idea if I had started earlier. To have all your commands in the same corner of the keyboard must be an advantage! The alternate set up can mess up my gameplay sometimes; I play with a laptop, so the keys are closely spaced and small, so sometimes I hit W instead of Q or E, bringing my tank to a halt and giving my enemy an easy kill :(

That is a good point about the closely spaced and small keys of a laptop-keyboard. I suppose it will not work well in that situation.

On a normal standard keyboard it works flawlessly, at least in my experience.

I am a master of WASD. I used to play those old Star Wars games as a kid, which used WASD, and then I played Minecraft for a couple of years. To make my gameplay even weirder I combine the two systems, so I use WASD, z x and c for turret rotation, q an e for changing up and down view, and the spaebar all with my left hand. To use drugs with 1 2 3 4 and 5 I use my right, and I again use my left hand to check the score with tab. Whatever crazy system it is, hey, it works.

Well, you also got everything closely grouped together: even more so!

Only thing that really wonders me is that your right hand ( that lazy bugger ;) ) does so little.

In my view it could easily do the < > turret control as well, and by doing so relief that incredible virtuoso left hand of yours!

Ofcourse: if it works, don 't fix it! :)

I use arrow keys on an AZERTY keyboard. For more cool stuff about keyboards, check out this wonderful article by hogree: [issue 18] [Guide] Mastering your Tanki Keyboard

I read this article also when I was wondering if WASD was any good for playing Tanki.

It 's one of the reasons I decided to take the "plunge" to WASD.

It is a good article, but I do remember I was surprised that he did not mention the WASD + QE combination.

Than again there are so many possible combinations, that it is not that strange! :)

Look at SpiderPig 's key combination, I would have never thought of that one!

I use WASD with my left, <>?, Drug, and tab with the right hand.

But if i have to drug to save the battle I use the arrow keys with my right hand, and ZXC and 12345 with the left.

I use SpiderPig's system if im eating, which is about half the time. So if it seems like I dont know how to turn my turret, I have a melted cheese sammich with pepperoni in the other hand.

Nice, how you are able to make complete shifts of the key combinations!

And in the last case: ofcourse it 's perfectly allowed to make some sacrifices for such a tasty sammich... :)

http://en.tankiforum.com/index.php?showtopic=184760&hl=keyboard As given in this topic, I use WASD, QE, ZXC and space. Like this: http://prntscr.com/277xt0

Wow, it sure looks "crowded" that way.

Right hand ZXC to < > and you have a lot more "space" IMO.

If having more space is beneficial or not: I have no clue!

But hey a Generalissimo ánd even more so a member of the top-clan "the Noob Army":

so I am definitely not saying you are doing anything wrong here.... ;)

Ex-Noob army member ;) Anyway, it works great for me, and I don't experience any problems with both hands there.

Wow lol you must be skilled to use it that way  ._.

I tried it and it failed...... big time

Well... I am left-handed, I have no choice xD I used to cross my arms to use arrows first, so zxc for turret. Then I figured out that WASD is easier, so I started to use that, but never got to <> so.... that's why ;p

Not a Noob anymore: I sure believe that! :P

Or not a member of the Clan anymore?

"so I started to use that, but never got to <> so.... that's why": you never got to <> ??? .....it 's not that far! ;)

Hehehehe, they're very good, no doubt ;p

No, I won't join a clan, as I am the clansection moderator. I am not allowed to be in a clan, and that's why I left Noob Army

Let me rephrase that: ''so I started to use that, but never got to use <> so.... that's why''

The WASD keys feel different to the arrow ones. I guess I'm used to how the arrow keys are spread out.. Anyways, I tried it out but I couldn't manage.

There is no reason to go to WASD if you are already good with the Arrow keys!

In my case as a beginner I just started to move my tank with some ease with the Arrows.

At that point I found out that WASD was possible to use and I swapped almost immediately.

So it was doable for me, still it took me quite some days to get used to WASD.

My brain was already used to the Arrows, so it was even harder to change it towards WASD,

than it had been when I first learned to drive with the Arrow keys in Tanki Online.

Changing a habit is a lot harder than learning a new thing.
