Discussion: Your Windows 10 upgrade plans?

I'm curious as to what everyone's plans for upgrading to Windows 10 are? (remember: it's a free upgrade, at least for the first year. available at the end of July, iirc)

Will you upgrade immediately? Within a few months? Years? Never? Don't care? Do care but not motivated enough? Other thoughts?

One thing that's always been a ball-and-chain around the neck of Windows developers has been the fragmentation of user bases across multiple Windows generations. For instance, if you wrote an app in 2010 then you still had to support Windows XP. Because it cost money to upgrade you couldn't expect your users/customers to have upgraded. Only once enough users upgraded and you weren't cutting too many people out of the loop was it feasible to bump up the system requirements of your app.

However, with the introduction of Windows 8.1 as a free upgrade, this equation changed. I stopped testing on Windows 8 once 8.1 came out because any problem that 8 had that was fixed in 8.1 could be fixed by just installing the free upgrade. For instance, there is a bug in Windows 8, but not 8.1, that causes the Paint.NET title bar to flicker. I had a workaround for 8 but I removed it once 8.1 came out (the code was an ugly hack). If someone were to report that bug to me then my fix for them would be to install Windows 8.1 (thankfully in this case it's solely a cosmetic bug caused by Windows 8's DWM).

If Windows 10 adoption is going to be swift, and since it's a free upgrade from Windows 7, 8, 8.1, then it may make sense to start using functionality only available in Windows 10 and to require it. There are enhancements in Direct2D and DirectWrite that aren't available in Windows 7, for instance, that would be fun to start experimenting with.

I have a laptop and a desktop... and I play TO only on desktop, and use laptop for work purpose only...(work ≠ job, but other things like reading, studying etc.)

I installed 10 on my laptop...and had a pretty good experience...and was about to install 10 on desktop the next day...

BUT, just that night, I read a lot of people saying that TO doesn't works good on 10...so I thought that I should halt for some time...I went over the web and found the 10 had some minor drawbacks (which every windows has)....then I tried playing TO on laptop once...it was an similar experience like in 8.1, but was actually better by a small amount...

But then SOO much of criticism about 10 feared me....and I still run desktop on 8.1 and laptop on 10....

So i decided that I will install 10 on desktop only when I get an automatic notification to update...

But I still say that I am having a great experience with 10 personally...its quite creative and useful...

I want to upgrade my windows 7 to windows 11 when it'll come...

1 week with my new pc,I got used to Windows 7 Ultimate,so I`ll stay with it

I don't think Microsoft will be supporting Win7 for very long.  Not like they did with XP anyway.

I left it a month to allow the main issues to be fixed, and then upgraded last weekend. Went from Windows 7 Professional to Windows 10 Pro and all went smoothly with no problems at all.

@DonCarnage I really reccomend it because it has been made and my gaming experience has been very well, there are no bugs so far, ive been using it for over 1 month and I am really impressed by it!

The reveiws saying that it isnt good are completely false, even if you upgrade it to Windows 10 you have the option to Downgrade.

All in all, IT IS VERY GOOD

wow! im glad your all so happy with the fact that Windows 10 sends all your key strokes and search history to advertisement companies and to the computer administrator...

oh, not to mention they actually tried to make internet explorer a thing again with "microsoft edge"

My opinion about windows 10 is that it sucks. Most of my games like Gta 5, Hitman absolution, Crysis 3 doesn't work on it, its booting time is way slower than windows 8/8.1, my pc crashes randomly, my internet gets disconnected and looks worse than windows 7.. the aero mode is much better than this black theme which looks like a remake of the old windows classic theme. And most importantly microsoft forces you to download windows updates whether you want it or not, unless you have a wifi connection and change to 'metered', and I got a limited usage wireless dongle  <_<

The only good thing that I find is the improvement of internet explorer called Edge browser.

Well, it's pretty simple to go to 'Privacy' in the settings menu and disable these features. In fact it was the first thing I did following the upgrade.

As for your comment about Edge, it's actually turning out to be a pretty fast browser, and when extension support is released, I'll be considering it over the memory-hogging Chrome.
