Short Story N°5+6!

Aborigines in Australia

From what we know, aborigines were the first humans that lived in Australia.

The aborigines were very communal, they lived only from hunting, picking and sometimes fishing for some of them. They were dressed with little clothing; just enough to hide their gender and women were bare chest. Children lived like their parents, naked and barefoot, like wild children. As they were nomads, they had to move depending on the season, needs in water, food or because of specific rituals they had to celebrate. They also made their huts and shared all their meals together.

There is no really ‘determinable’ language of Australian Aborigines. They obviously had their own language, which they used to communicate orally, but they never ever invented any kind of ‘written version’ of their language, which means that we don’t have any text or inscription from them. Therefore, their language stays pretty mysterious to us, although the language still seems to be spoken by some –rare people in Australia. Indeed, the language tended to be less spoken, and, bit-by-bit, got replaced by English. But some people kept on talking that language, which, by the way, had some 600 different dialects in whole Australia.

Children Aborigines have to make most of their education their self. Why? Because Aborigines consider that a child is an elder that is starting a new life. That the elder ‘reincarnated’ another body, but kept the knowledge. The only thing children will have to learn is to respect their tribe. The only functions of their parents are to protect, feed but in no circumstances punish them. Things change when they become adolescent, as girls start the ‘initiation’ when they have their first periods and boys have to do the ritual called “Dreamtime”, that consists of going away from the tribe together with the oldest man of the tribe (“The wise man”), so the adolescent can learn the language, myths and rituals of his civilisation.

In conclusion, the Australian Aborigines still are a very mysterious civilization because of the lack written record. They would have totally disappeared if there were no reserves such as “Terres Darhlem” or the reserve in Alice Springs that explain their usages to tourists.

Mysteries

The first mystery I'll be talking about is the following one:

Are humans the only form of intelligence in the universe?

This mystery isn’t solved and will most likely never be solved, knowing that the universe expands all the time.

We are, so far, the only form of intelligence in the universe, which humans know. So, to be short, except themselves, humans haven’t discovered any other form of intelligence.

But this might not last for long anymore, knowing that we’ve recently discovered water on Mars! Who knows… Maybe we’ll discover Martians?

I like this mystery mainly because it’s a mystery that lasts pretty much ‘forever’. Million of years ago, the mystery was already there, and I doubt we’ll have found the correct explanation for it in one million years!

Moreover, many mysteries have an author, while here, in addition of the main ‘mystery’, the author of it is also a mystery, for which many people have found their own ‘explanation’ (à Religions).

So basically, this mystery has no limits but does have many interpretations (like for every other mystery, actually).

Another mystery I found interesting is also about ‘space & co’, as it’s about a man, called Jerry Ehman, a volunteer for SETI, or the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. One day, he was scanning radio waves from deep space, hoping to randomly come across a signal that bore the hallmarks of one that might be sent by intelligent aliens, when he saw his measurements spike.

The signal lasted for 72 seconds, and it looked like this:

He wrote “Wow!” on the original paper, hence the name of this mystery-The Wow! Signal.

We couldn’t determine where the message came from, in the galaxy, which makes this story a mystery.

I like this mystery because it was in relation with the previous ones. “Are we alone in here?”. This is a very futurist and ideal mystery to grab people’s attention, which sadly makes this theory less credible.

The reason why people like mysteries (in my opinion) is because they know they are safe, while reading articles about mysteries. It’s kind of similar to amusement parks: When you get on a roller-coaster, you know you’re riding around 50-90 km/h, but you also know that whatever happens (except extreme cases but you usually don’t refer to them for making your opinion about the situation), you’ll be safe, as you’re in a cart and almost nothing can happen! So it's really the feeling you get of knowing you're safe while informing yourself about some dangerous mysteries.

But in general (for these 2 mysteries, too) it's just curiosity. We've all always wanted to know what happens after death, or, the example I took earlier, are we alone in the universe? A pretty exciting question that always grabs people's attention!
