PART-II

 

Yuri had trouble sleeping that night, his mother’s screams running through his mind. He twisted and turned in his makeshift bed, provided by the Guild. The Guild, he thought. It is my only home now. But is it really a home? Can I ever have a home? He stared at the ceiling. He tried to focus on something else, his contract, his friends, anything, but in vain. His mind was in turmoil and he knew it. He started counting yaks, as his mother had told him to do whenever he couldn’t sleep. He had reached 350 yaks when he had a noise outside. He got up from the bed, slipped his feet into the borrowed slippers and peeked outside through the window. He saw a truck parked outside, and some people unloading some boxes from it. What’s going on? Maybe I should go and check. No, it’s none of my business. I have seen enough movies to know what happens to people who snoop around too much. He shuddered and went back to his bed. He resumed counting yaks and fell asleep somewhere around 900 yaks.

 

Yuri woke up in the morning, his throat as dry as a desert. I need some water. He stepped out of his hut and looked around, hoping to find someone to request for water. He was disappointed. There was no one is sight. That’s strange, have I woken up too early? He went back inside and looked at the clock. 10:00 AM?! I have woken late. But then, where is everyone? He stepped outside his hut again, and went towards the main building. He entered the building, only to find it completely empty. Ok, this is getting creepy now. He remembered what he saw the previous night. Has that scene got anything to do with what I saw? Probably. Wait; is this a test of some kind? That makes sense. They are testing my mental strength by trying to creep me out. ‘YOU GUYS CAN COME OUT NOW. I CANNOT BE FOOLED THIS EASILY.’ he shouted. Silence. He shouted again. Again no reply. Yuri started to panic. What if something really has happened? Maybe their lives are in danger. But what do I do? Ah, lemme check the place where I saw that truck last night. Yuri walked to the warehouse, where all the equipment and inventory was stored. He stepped in the warehouse. A few rays of light were creeping in from the windows, otherwise it was pitch black. Where are the lights? Yuri went to the door and felt about for a switch. He found one and turned it on. And what he saw horrified him

 

He saw corpses, with their clothes soaked with blood, lying on the floor. The floor was red and so were Yuri’s eyes. He was in shock, for the second time in 2 days. He sat down on the floor, oblivious of the blood soaking into his clothes. There were gunshot wounds, indicating that they had been shot at. Everyone I loved is dead. He got up and walked among the dead bodies, kicking one or two here and there. At the very end, lay the body of the guildmaster. And next to him lay a letter. Yuri picked it up and opened it. It read

Yuri, I know you are reading this. I bet you are thinking, what has happened? Who is the person behind this? Why is everyone dead? And Yuri, I can answer two of these questions. I am the person behind these killings. But why? Because of YOU. I wanted you and I will go to any lengths to get what I want. So, if you value your life, come meet at your house today at 12:00 PM. If you do not show up due to any reason, you will die. If you try to act smart with me and try to call for help, you will die. And if you bring someone along with you, you will die. I await you.

Yuri dropped the letter, his hands trembling. Why me? Why I am so special? What can’t I live my life like a normal professional assassin? ‘Because you are better than the rest’ a voice inside him spoke. And inside him, he knew it was true. He was destined for this and all he could do is deal with it. I better start moving; it will take some time to reach my parent’s home. Yuri took a deep breath and set out towards the woods

 

1.5 HOURS LATER

 

Yuri climbed over the fence surrounding the house and landed in the garden, a mess as usual. He looked around. Where is mom, and my brother? They probably moved out, didn’t want to sleep here anymore. He entered the house through the back door. The kitchen looked a mess. The plates were broken, broken pieces of china dishes lying here and there. Something clearly had happened there. What is going on? Suddenly two hands seized him from behind and dragged him out of the kitchen and into the living room. He was dumped on the floor. He picked himself up from the floor and saw a man sitting on the couch.

‘Who are you?’

 

‘Wolf’

 

‘Why did you kill everyone? Why did you spare me? Why did you call me here? What has happened in the kitchen?’

 

‘Ah, so many questions. You will get your answers in due time boy. Right now, I have a job for you’

 

‘I ain’t gonna do anything for you mister, keep dreaming’

 

‘You haven’t got much of a choice’

 

‘Oh really? What are you going to do? Torture me until I agree?’

 

‘Yes, but not in the way you would imagine’

 

‘Enlighten me’

 

‘I always had this dream to become the most brutal and effective torturer of all time. So much so, that there will

be a unit for pain, named after me!’

 

‘No one cares about your ambitions, just answer me’

 

Wolf went on, ignoring Yuri.

 

‘And in my research, I found out that emotional torture is way more effective than physical torture.’

 

‘So?’

 

‘Therefore, If you don’t consent, I will kill what’s left of your pathetic family’

 

‘No! Kill the mother, not the baby’

 

‘Yes or no?’

 

‘NO!’

 

‘5’

 

‘PLEASE! WE CAN WORK SOMETHING OUT!’

‘PLEASE!’

‘SHOW SOME MERCY!’

‘OK! OK! I AGREE!’

 

‘Good. Now here is your job. There is a mafia, operating in China. You have to bring me the head of its leader.’

 

‘You mean, kill him?’

 

‘I want the head, if it requires killing him, then so be it’

 

‘What if I fail?’

 

‘Something worse than death will happen to you’

 

‘Like?’

 

Wolf just winked, and then Yuri blacked out.

Jokes aside, really nicely done. Bit of a gender issue at the beginning (pay close attention to the wording :P), and the main character seems a little bit cheesy (all-caps doesn't work well for characters), but overall you were much smoother this time Qfu.

Well done, just read it. :) Apart from a rather sudden change in the approach of your character once he goes to meet Wolf, I found it pretty good. Also, parts of the plot remind me of the film "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag". :P
