Remnant

If you'd like to read the first part, it's here.

Part 2:

Dimitri did not come home that night. "What is wrong with this child? Did he not remember to come back before nightfall?", his father wondered. "The beasts of the night come out once the sun is out of the sky; he will not win a fight against one."  "Maybe he found something cool, and he's lugging it back in that old tank of his!", came a voice. It was Dimitri's younger brother, Alex. "The last time he was out late, he brought back a big pack of popcorn! That was great." His father replied, "I think something is wrong, but I don't want to risk anything by going outside at this time. I'll sit next to the door in case Dimitri decides to come back in the next few hours. You and your mother should go to bed."

Alex went into his room. It was smaller than Dimitri's, and his toys and contraptions littered the ground. He climbed into his bed, pulled the blankets over, and closed his eyes. The moon shone through the window as a wolf howled in the distance. There was no sound from within the house.

He knew what to do.

Half an hour had passed when Alex stirred himself from sleep. He climbed out of his bed and quietly opened his closet to take out a heavy coat, a flashlight, his canteen, and a knife. As he crept out of his room and into the living room, he heard the sound of his father snoring. Alex tiptoed through the hallway and was out of the door before anybody heard a sound.

It was cold outside, as autumn was after the war. The moon gave off a pale light as ash clouds drifted in the sky. Alex rounded a corner, moved a piece of rubble, and found his bike. He climbed on, and rode to the last place he knew his brother went: the old warehouse.

It did not take long, for Alex knew of a short route that only bikes could use. The moon had already moved quite a bit when he got there. The town square was illuminated by the cold light of the moon, with stark-black shadows stretching across. After dismounting from his bike and stowing it away in a small corner, he crept closer to the center. He noticed a large object on the side streets, and more surprisingly, the sound of two men talking.

"What do you want to do with this guy? There isn't much on his person that we can use. I haven't checked his impressive little vehicle yet. Think we should do that now"

"Yeah, let's do that. Let's start by taking off the lead; he won't be needing it anymore. We're going to need it for building the bunkers."

As his eyes became more accustomed to the night, he took a good look at the dark object parked by the curb. It was his brother's tank. It became very clear to him.

His brother had been killed, and likely by these two fellows.

Alex felt a surge of anger flow through his veins. The night no longer felt cold. He felt an uncontrollable urge to yell and charge these two people. He wanted to pound them into mush. He was about to do just that when he reminded himself that he was only a 11 year old child. He was not going to have a chance against them.

"Huh, what's that thing over there? Almost looks like a person, maybe a little kid. Hey, you, what are you doing there!"

Alex was shaken out of thought and into the real world. He dashed towards his bike, mounted it, and biked as fast as he could. The shouts of the two men were soon too far away to be heard. His muscles burned, but he did not stop. His heart was in a frenzy, and his mind was fixated on one thing. Running.

Finally, his body gave up on him, and he collapsed off the bicycle. The night had grown old, the cold bitter. Alex crawled over to a secluded corner in the ruins, away from the biting wind and frost. He wept.
