[Issue 31] Takeovers

Recommended Posts

We've all been there. A battle almost won, secure, you think, just when that's cruelly snatched from you by a suddenly strong enemy team that's gunning your own players down without mercy.

It's difficult when one steals away your crystals that you have been working hard towards. But at the same time, you don't need to be sitting on that end of the situation all the time. Today, we shall discuss the other side - how to do the raiding.

Preparation

In any team game you cannot expect to win alone. The same applies to Tanki, and it doesn't matter how good a player is, if that player does not have a good team to play with, the game is still likely to go to the other team.

Takeovers rely on teamwork too. Often, takeovers are met with fierce resistance - the enemy team will be strong to have achieved that advantage already, and they also most likely won't give it up easily. So, the first step to taking over is to make a good takeover team. A team that is strong in terms of equipment and upgrades, a team that has plenty of supplies to give as big an advantage as possible, and a team that is well coordinated, ideally through some sort of communication like Skype. This allows the team to play together, rather than as individuals.

Choosing a game

Takeovers are often very costly operations, and can cost the players many supplies, so it is worth picking your game very carefully. There are many factors to consider, including:

  • Likely fund - you want maximum reward. Try picking a game where the players have already built up a sizable score, and the battle has been going on for some time. Not only will this mean that you will get more out of it when it finishes, but it also means that the enemies have more to lose if they leave, and are less inclined to do so, which would render the game dead. No one likes to leave a high fund game where they have already achieved a few hundred or thousand points in score!
  • Number of players - the more the number of players, the more potential your team can beat theirs by. If your team is coordinated, and the enemy is not, having more players on each team will amplify this advantage, and give you a better chance of winning. Furthermore, if your takeover team intends on drugging, it is less likely that the enemies will all drug back in a larger game, since they have more players. This is likely to give your team a larger drug advantage.
  • Rank requirements - ideally you want to find a game where your ranks are the highest there. This ensures that you will have the best equipment available at your rank, and that the enemies won't suddenly get their own stronger players to take you on.
  • Drugs - if you intend on taking over with maximum effect, you will want to be drugging, and so you will want drugs on. Try not to join a PRO unlimited drugs game. In this case, most players who join will be joining with the intention of drugging, and so you will likely face an enemy team of druggers too. Try joining just a normal game.
  • Time and score situation - you need to make sure your team has a safe chance of being able to takeover the game. There's no point in joining a game with 5 minutes left with the hope of capturing another 30 flags! Even if there is no time limit, you need to check the score situation, and this is also affected by the type of battle. CTF games and CP illustrates my point perfectly. Even if the enemy is just a few flags from winning, your team will still stand a reasonable chance if you make sure that you have a good defence. You can make sure the enemies capture no flags whatsoever. It is much harder however, to completely suppress the enemy from gaining points in CP, especially if there are multiple capture points around. The same is true for TDM - it is hard to completely kill of the enemy and prevent them from increasing their score at all. If the enemies are very close to winning the game already, the game may be out of reach to takeover.

Unity
It is impossible for a single player to take charge of all the many roles there are in a team, simply because one combination that is suitable for one role is unlikely to be good in another. So, you should aim to divide the roles, each player dedicated to one particular part of the team.

For a fuller insight into each of the team game modes, don't forget to check out the newspaper archive for the gameplay series.

In TDM, where you want to recover from a deficit, you want to minimise deaths as well as kill the enemies. So, a small unit of Isidas makes a lot of sense, which can restore your team's health if no first aids are available.

For CTF, there are more obvious roles. The first one that comes to mind is defence. This is because you are already likely to be behind in the game when you join, so you have to completely suppress the enemy from taking your flag. A strong defensive team often involves strong Freezes and Isidas, mounted on heavier hulls. Since you also need to capture flags, a strong offensive force is a must.

For CP, the main objective is to capture the point of course, so a strong unit is needed to do this. Often, heavier tanks are great, since they are more effective in a head on drug-war, and can last at the point for a longer period of time. Other supporting roles can provide covering fire.

And there we are, a few quick and basic tips for success in takeovers. Of course, these are only basic - in the end it comes down to the strength of your team and your own skills!

Good luck! Feel free to share your own funds and raids!

Choosing a game is one thing.. Takeovers always seem to happen in the last 20 mins of a one hour game for me.... One side mults and the other suddenly presses 1-2-3-4-5 ... It's a headache to always leave in the last few minutes but I still do. In the end all the XP gained doesn't translate into crystals... <.< How do I fight against takeovers?

You forgot to mention the use of mults.

Although I hate to say it is effective... Probably shouldn't be recommending such things :P

I was about to say that, almost 90% of long battle overtaken involving that.

if one left half way and the slot is open, that means one mult will be in. mostly if all teammates dont give up half way, there is still chance to defense the overtaking raid.

so staying with friends in such battles will most secure the lead and avoid raid. most time I play with at least 2 other friends together in long battle, so I know at least they wont left half way.

what are mults?????

Get a weak account to join the enemy team, who does nothing and sabotages the game for your team - that tank is a mult :p

Mults and saboteurs are basically the same

This is easier said then done, seriously. I tried to coordinate with the team and all they did was not listen to me, and everyone but me was on offense. LOL (We lost)

I back that up sometimes the team I am in just rush in like crazies never listening to DarkShadow but sometimes they do and we win :)

Or I listen to someone else coordinating :D

Sometimes friends need to leave too k

I agree. I finally figured out when to leave a battle. I just need more discipline. I often have it.
