Support analogue joypad

Recommended Posts

Hi people,

I don't know how many of you play Tanki with keyboard and how man with Joypad - would be interesting to know.

I used to play with keyboard, like most of us - but having discovered how to play Tanki with a Joypad, I would not want to return to keyboard anymore. However, the basic concept of controlling tanks in Tanki is digital, not analogue. Meaning while I use an analogue Joaypad, the game only differentiates between no speed (stop) and full speed. Same with steering left or right. If a game supports analogue controllers, you'd be able to adjust the speed depending on how far you push the stick.

Quite often this is a problem for me, as one of the joysticks on my Joypad is just located in between two states, which results in tumbling driving (i.e. full speed and full steering to one side at the same time) - if that happens, that's just annoying. Having the tank under control is one of the most imortant things of the game. Yes I know, some people drive their tanks like they're sitting inside, they don't seem to have any problems - I would love to watch them playing.

Question to Tanki: is it possible to integrate analogue control to the game?

If not, maybe it would be a good idea, to offer a downloadable client for us, instead using the browser.

Thanks

you just need to tweak some stuff and you can use your joypad. but is not confortable as c8o said. we need some sort of analogic steering and turret turning. if we will ever get that, i will not wait a second to drive my tank whit a f1 steering wheel and some keys to shot and turn the turret.

You can use joypad in playing tanki!

i saw a developer in the v-log used joypad, but i dont know how to use it or activate it :P

Firstly, that developer was using a Play Station controller. Secondly, he used a program called Xpadder to convert what were once keyboard keys, to game controller parts or movements. Though this does not solve the, "full speed or nothing" issue, it does allow for a more, "gamer style" of playing. Xpadder is a program that cost ten U.S. dollars, and may require some driver updates / downloads. Here is the link to a player who took the time to break it down for everyone. Instructions.

Additionally, if this, "full speed or nothing" issue, were to be removed by making Tanki add controller programming for the game, then players who used keyboards would be hindered from those that used controllers. Tanki is meant to be a game that anyone and everyone can play for free, with the simple need to have some form of access to a computer. If this idea was integrated into the game, then some players would have an extremely unfair, "buyer" sort of advantage. As the players with controllers would have extra abilities with their tank.

Hi, if anyone is interested in trying his joypad with Tanki, it works with a little program like xpadder or JoyToKey.

If you try it out, please let us know how it works for you.

By the way, here is how I have configured my Joypad (from the pic above):

And here is the keyboard layout, which is much harder to manage:

MarineMan2

... players who used keyboards would be hindered from those that used controllers.

Players who use a keyboard are already pretty much in a disadvantaged position compared to those who use an (analogue) Joypad.

Considering how little money a Joypad cost these days and how many people enjoy playing Tanki, I think it would be well worth. Or the developers may consider to implement analogue control in the upcoming Tanki Unity instead.

I would be happy just to be able to use the mouse for the turret and the ability to remap keys.

Having the turret controls above the "Windows" and "ALT" key is a horrible idea.

I don't think the ability to use the mouse for the turret is possible in Flash. They would most probably put it in Unity, but they most likely won't cause it would ruin gameplay

I like the idea of making Tanki Online compatible with all contollers, but not the idea of making controllers have more options than the keyboard.

It's either full speed or no speed-that's the way it is.

That's the way how it is today, but it doen't have to stay that way. Smart people always strive for ways to improve things. Just remember how Tanki looked like when it came out and compare it with how it looks today. It improves constantly and in my opinion there is no valid reason to stop this. You would not want to swap your 16 GB USB Key for a 1.44 MB (3.5 inch) Floppy, would you? Look at modern PC games - as good as all of them support analogue Joysticks and Joypads, people wouldn't accept anything less. Racing or Flightsimulators with digital control? Forget it!

You know the Tanki map called Iran? It has lots of small building and alleys. Having played on this map yesterday, I noticed how frustrating controlling my tank with the digital Joypad is. It was sooo bad and I don't think I get used to it anyimte soon. There is no time left for precise controlling, you need to act within fractions of seconds, otherwise you are the complete loser - and boy I was driving like drunken, all due to the damn digital control. If there's one single thing that annoys me tremendously, then it's not being able to have my tank under control.

It's not easy controlling hull and turret seperately anyway, but for me although having reached the Warrant Officer 3 state by now, I still feel like a noob, specially when certain other players move around me like they were born in a tank and have never done anything else than driving tanks in their life. Another thing that I just remember is - I mentioned it elsewhere in this forum - when you hit any kind of obstacle, you're forced to a full stop - this is not only crazy deadly when we're in a hurry, but unrealistic as well. We should be able to just drive over small things or slide aside - but please: no full stop ever again.

As I said, being able to have full control over your vehicle is 99% of the game.

I do have full control, I just pump the forward key instead of holding it down.

You don't need to use a full quote. This only clutters the stream of postings.

My problem is not so much adjusting the forward / backward speed but more to seperate between driving straight and steering left or right. Most of the time I end up tumbling because there is no defined point on the joypad. That would improve with analogue control, because if you overstep the point (on the Joystick) between driving straight full speed and steering slightly to either side, it would not change your direction as rigorous but only slightly. Here is a comparison:

Wouldn't that make steering to the right/left way harder??

Why do you keep on quoting whole comments? That's not necessary.

I guess you have never used an analogue Joystick with PC games like Need for Speed or IL-2 - Sturmovic.

Know steering wheels like the Logitech G27 for example? Look up some YouTube gameplay. These kind of devices are analogue by default cause there is no point using them with digital control.

They haven't released it on consoles yet....I'm really hoping that they do.

But until then, I know of no way to play Tanki on PS4 or Xbox.

I have been using xpadder for about a year now, and have several game controllers programmed through it.   I find it better than using the keyboard.

I have set the controllers up with different configurations, and swap them around as I wish, depending on whatever turret or hull I am using, or even which map I am on.

I am no expert at computer gaming, but have found that even with my skill level, my play is faster with a game controller than using a keyboard.
