Do we really need the Olympic Games?

 Share

Recommended Posts

As you know, Olympic games are held every 4 years, each year in a different country. And the countries that are going to hold the Olympic Games spend billions of dollars to built stadiums, etc. for the Olympic Games and their preparations. In fact, the amount of money spent is ridiculously much. For example my country (Azerbaijan) is holding The first European Games this summer and 8 billion dollars has already been spent for it. OK, now wait there, 8 billion dollars for Olympic Games?! There are thousands of extremely poor homeless people all over the world and people still spend billions on just an simple entertainment event that is going to last only for a few weeks. Building a tiny house costs just 10k USD, so 40.000 tiny houses could be built for homeless people just with the half of the money spent for a stadium. Nowadays, it seems like people care more about fashion, entertainment, and other useless things more than the lives of others. I mean, look at this:

Instead of this, wouldn't it be better to built 40.000 tiny houses to avoid homeless people freezing?

Interesting, great idea for a topic. I was thinking roughly the same with the World Cup - in Brazil, while people lived on the brink of nothing the government still had the money (which would do great good to those less well-off) to tidy up and create the stadiums for the event.

Why doesn't the homeless themselves take initiative to better their conditions? What you wish happens only in a perfect Disney world not irl.

Well, some of them just can't, and why not? Governments have plenty of money, but they are spending it on useless things.

let me explain

when a government hosts some games or conference or ceremony etc

they will get publicity and temporarily get attention of public [ including investers ]

+ rich people who pay or donot pay tax come to watch it

they pay for ticket , food , pillows or cushions etc.

government makes a killing

and the profit is later on used to develop a nation

thats my thinking

:)

Well, at the end of the day the government was elected democratically hence it reflects views of the public. I don't know much 'bout politics and I'm pretty sure the same goes for you. So, I'll not be too philosophical and accept the decision of the government which make far more sense than some teenagers sitting in front of a computer.

No, not at all. In London Summer Olympics, 2012, the government spent 19 billion USD on preparations, and the profit earned by tourists was just 15 billion, so they lost 4 billion. Also, our government pays everything for tourists coming to see the European games: hotels, tickets, flight, etc., so the tourists will pay 0 cents.

No, not at all. The real life is completely different.

Bro, government knows it better than everybody, but they just care about their reputations.

Th

Country earns more than it spends from the Olympic games, also the homeless are mostly made of people who got themselves in that situation! They is no argument that would stop the Olympic games simply because sport is the most successful entertainment and it's big money, people spend their money to watch their country show how good they're and how beautiful it's like a big advertisement

To be rich is for someone else to be poor.

The government earns money by tax, which it would earn alot by hosting a huge sporting event, the simple fact is everyone who has worked had benefits from the huge sporting event businesses, food sellers hotels, the influx of tourists and such means the government would earn more money than it spend, remember the money the government earns is the tax payers the more money it has the better for the tax payer.

Correct.

They earn profit from sources other than tourists.

I do believe that governments waste a lot of money. I often question if they couldn't have spent some of the money to more important, needful occasions such as the fight against poverty.

Though the Olympic Games is a secular tradition that needs to be kept alive in my opinion. :p

The governments wastes a bunch of money in general. Ending the Olympics or pausing it won't really help the current situation our country and other countries are in really.

No, as I said before, in the last Olympic games (London, 2012), there was no profit, but 4 billion dollars of loss, it was always like this. The total money spent was 19 billion dollars and the total profit was 15 billion dollars, so 4 billion dollars were thrown into garbage. I'm not saying the Olympic games should be removed, I'm just against the amount of money being spend for it every time. For example, let's take the main stadium: it was used for the opening ceremony only and most of the budget was spent just for it. And, who needs an advertisement? Aren't poor people freezing in winter more important for the government? Do the government care more about the rich side of the country?

The government earns money by tax, which it would earn alot by hosting a huge sporting event, the simple fact is everyone who has worked had benefits from the huge sporting event businesses, food sellers hotels, the influx of tourists and such means the government would earn more money than it spend, remember the money the government earns is the tax payers the more money it has the better for the tax payer.

No, the total profit is less than the total money spent. Also, the government pays everything for tourists, including hotels, flight, tickets, etc., that are coming to watch the European games. So, there is 0 profit.

The goverment(s) make more than they spend. What would be better is if they gave the money they made to the poor/homeless.

They don't, read the earlier posts here. If they used this money, or at least the half of it on the homeless people, thousands of homeless people wouldn't die in the cold winter days, and that's what the responsibility of governments.

They earn profit from sources other than tourists.

But, that doesn't mean they can spend the money to whatever they want; they aren't there to do it.

I'm not saying there shouldn't be Olympic games, I just think the governments spend too much money on them. They can keep the tradition alive with a smaller budget, for example, let's take the Olympic swimming pools. Instead of building a complete new building, they can restrore an old pool and use it as the Olympic pool. So, they would spend less and less money, and also, other people would use it in future. Instead of billions, it would just cost 10k $ probably.

No the government always profits, I live in the uk, we had the Olympic games, Paralympic games, the commonwealth games, athletics,

This meant the government earned more money so did the business,

Sport is big money it's why the government spends do much money building new things, because the benefits will last a long time.

And at the end of the day all that money is tax payers money, if people want to help homeless people they could do it anytime they like, however a big sporting event is rare that's why even the poorest countries want to host them.

"A lot of people were very cynical about this... but as a result of all the work that was done we have this very considerable amount," he said.

He added there was an "upward estimate" that, by 2020, the Games could have benefited the UK by as much as £40bn."

No, not at all. In 2012, UK spent 19 billion just for the summer Olympics, and got 15 billion, so there is not profit
