Past Present and Future Tanki

NOTE: Isn't it funny how even though this topic is closed I can still edit it?

Hello tankers I got bored and did some research on Tanki Online, surprising huh? And I guess I found out thing I haven't known about the past, present and well future of Tanki. So I guess I'll be here to tell it to you today.

PAST:

As most of you know, Tanki Online was created by a team called AlternativaPlatform. But some of you may not know it wasn't like "Hey bro, wanna make a computer game?". There was another game before Tanki Online, called "Tanks for Two". This was a game where two players battled each other, and well that's it. But then they made a demo of "Tanks for Two". The demo version of the game had lots more features, like a garage and more players than just 1 vs 1. There were 3 tanks but only 1 turret. The hulls didn't have names like Hunter, Hornet, Viking, instead they were listed as 'light, medium, and heavy'. The one turret was later introduced as Smoky in the game we have today, as for it's shot had the same sound and looked the same as Smoky. The way the game worked was there was only one map which was actually only made of one piece unlike now where maps are made of lots of small pieces called props. Anyways tankers played on this one map and it worked like this: 1 shot to kill a light tank, 2 for a medium tank and 3 for a heavy tank.

A few years later, on May 8th, 2009 a testing for Tanki Online launched. After a month of testing an open testing went out. But this wasn't open testing like test server where you do whatever you want then it goes out to the real game. This was people going threw maps and the game looking for bugs and glitches. After almost a month of search a bit over 600 people helped the search for bugs. They found more than 200 bugs and helped AlternativaPlatform fix the problems as well as gave a ton of feedback.

The game was on its own man server in Summer of 2009.

At first the game was kind of going crazy, prices for turrets, hull, and more were all completely different. There were lots of bugs, glitches and lags. Basically, everyone was able to agree the game was crazy at that point.. For example Firebird had a to huge visual-effect on an enemy. Of course this bug was easy to fix quickly, and was. But apart from turrets and hulls, it was quite easy to change the tanks engine, which of course meant hacks. A bunch of elements of tanks were wearing out. Every hit a hull got, ever shot a turret fired, and the engine got worn out with the distance it covered. Tanki was also hard for newbies as for everything was wearing out really quickly, to many funds for it to constantly change. So the developers had to give up these elements of gameplay.

These turrets are no second gen turrets, the length of Railgun (Which was originally called Fear Machine) was the length of Wasp. And don't even ask about it's damage, M0 Railgun had the damage of around 100 HP back then, that means it can one shot an M0 Hornet. Also back then there was only 1 battle supply, a First Aid kit.The picture on it showed a syringe, instead of the red cross that we'vd gotten used to so much. That's why players that used it were often called druggers, whilst the supply itself was commonly known as a "drug". But now we have a wrench on it.

Ignoring all the lags and bugs, players started trying to do parkour with tanks, back then to the devs it seemed like the strangest thing but now parkour in TO is known as regular sport. An idea of introducing a racing mode was brought up. A map-maker called Avocado made a map called Monte Carlo that was supposed to become one of the 'racing tracks'. The idea was scrapped, whilst the map remained; it's still quite popular with players.

The Capture the Flag mode was added to the game on July 31st, 2009.

By the time of mid 2010 the game had already 200k players. This is also when the Double Armor, Double Damage, Nitro (Speed Boost) and Mine were added/ Since then active supplies were shown on top of the tank right below the health and reload bar. Since then Tanki also started making contests.

In 2009 devs decided to create a turret which can deal with enemies and heal teamates as well. This is when Isida happened. Originally, players could heal themselves using Isida (when shooting). This fact made Isida the most powerful gun, hence unbalancing the game. The game designers were forced to remove this feature as a result. Since then, the turret became the Isida we all know today (Only heal itself while shooting an enemy tank).

An experimental version of the Gold Box with 1000 crystals in it (10,000 crystals in today's currency). After that, the value of the box was changed to 100 crystals (now worth 1000 crystals), and it was left in the game.

But wait, the games effect was near perfect yet, there were still lots of bugs. For example a so-called UFO effect.

The reason for the bug was simple: One of props had an invisible element stretching into the sky which caused it to be pulled upwards.

The game already had around 500k players at this point. A notable event was the appearance of the first Marshal. His nickname was T7000. The second player to achieve this was a tanker called 777777.

At the close end of 2009, Alternativa started working on a new project called Tanki Online 2.0, which obviously meant to develop the existing Tanki Online game. This was meant to be an absolutely new product with more realistic graphics, a more user-friendly interface and a whole lot more useful functions (social networks, mobile platform, and so on). However, after a year and a half of development, there was a change of plans, and it was decided to cancel the project and add all the new functions (new server platform, updated graphics, etc.) into the existing version of Tanki Online step by step. Which by now is almost done and that is why Alterntiva is working on what we currently call in V-LOGs "The New Tanki"

Second generation of weapons and hulls was introduced! They were three hulls: Viking, Hornet and Mammoth and three turrets: Thunder, Ricochet and Freeze.

Many new maps were added. The looks of the game changed significantly. Tanki Online had from 1,000,000 to 4,000,000 active players at that time.

The demand for first generation weapons dropped significantly. There were rumours about a mysterious gun called Shaft. We all know how that feels, we've just went through it with Hammer.

The Chinese server of Tanki Online was launched in April 2010.

This was the most awaited gun in the history of Tanki Online. The marketing department said that when it was first released, it was bought at a rate of 3 guns per second (That's crazy right?)! The length of the gun was such that if you had it on a Wasp, it would be two times the size of the hull. At first, the Shaft gun had a lot of disadvantages. but the biggest of which was its inability to hold a full charge (it left the barrel as soon as you fully charged the gun). But there was one good point - the damage it dealt. M3 Shaft had a damage of 250! Now something you didn't know, Shaft was temporarily removed from the game for a bit for rebalancing. The updated Shaft was able to hold its charge, but M3 damage was lowered from 250 to 200.

On March 25, 2012, Tanki Online welcomed its 10,000,000th player! His nickname was lYonsl. The game was getting really popular.

On April 1st, players spotted a strange item in their Garages - the Green Triangle. Lots of speculations were made regarding its origin and purpose. Many thought that it was an element of some quest. Players were even calling battles "Green Triangle". But wait, look at the date again... :P

Then developers introduced really expensive paints with good protection from various turrets.

On February 14th, 2011, a new gun was added to the main servers - the famous Smoky XT. It was more expensive than a standard Smoky and had better parameters. During one week, any player with a rank of Warrant Officer 1 and higher could buy Smoky XT and use it till February 22nd. The next day, Smoky XT's damage was increased and it was decided to keep the gun in the game for just two more days because of Tanki's positive feedback. The event got lots of feedback from players (not a surprise as there were no changes like that before). The new gun became a number one discussion topic both in the game and in the forum. At 4:00 (UTC+0) on February 24th, Smoky XT was removed from the game forever.

September 6th, 2012  became a really special day for the project, as it brought two of the biggest changes to the game; a new game mode called Control Points, and the new graphics.

The new graphics

3 days after the 1.100 update, we saw the 15,000,00th player registering in Tanki Online - his name was adilov.amir.

In the beginning of October, the Tanki Online forum was transferred to a new, more user-friendly engine.

On November 23rd, we saw the removal of the Madness map from the servers, due to its configuration.

Tanki Online didn't always have a friend list. On July 16th, 2013 Tanki Online came out with the friend list where you can send and receive friend requests. This made it easier for kids at school to find each others battles and play together.

PRESENT:
From Jan 1st, 2014 - Jan 14th Tanki Online New Year celebration was happening with a dark night map but with lots of light to brighten it up.

January 31 - global update of maps. Previews of all maps were changed. This update also brought Madness, one of the most famous maps of the game, back. (MY FEEDBACK: Hated it)

On Feb 26th Tanki Online changed it's homepage. It's attempt was to make it look more modern day like.

March 25 release of the update that allowed players to change their equipment right during a battle.

And on March 30th Tanki Online released the map Rio in honer of welcoming the Brazilian Tanki.

FUTURE:

The future is unknown and big, but sure to be great. Keep up the good work Tanki Online and even though I haven't like some of your updates, I got used to them. Good luck out there. :)

See you in the battle field!

The 'past' part is almost complete but you forgot the mot hated/liked 'Rebalance'. 'Present' is damn incomplete where are mus, new guns, etc...

Also the 2.0 controversy is incomplete.

this game has changed a lot and it will continue to change as time goes on. I'm stoked to see what's in store for the players in the coming years :)
