Wasp is a small, light hull, yet has one of the longest and most illustrious histories of any tank. I’ll be attempting to elaborate on a few of its key qualities, to point out some of its weaknesses, and to explain some of its history.

History

Wasp was one of the first three hulls, the original ‘light’ hull. The fastest hull in the game, it was surpassed when Hornet was released on April 24th, 2010. Later, after the rebalance of December 17, 2012, it once again became the fastest hull in the game, topping out at 10.8 m/sec. Almost a year later, with the introduction of the new physics, the speed of Wasp was boosted significantly. On 22 April 2014, the acceleration and turning acceleration of Wasp was increased. A year and a day later, Wasp was once again changed; it gained weight and acceleration. Since then, it has remained much the same; however, other hulls have not. Medium and heavy hulls have been made more powerful with respect to Wasp, gaining agility and health, while Wasp received nothing.

What to do with Wasp

With its agility, Wasp can do wonders. Capable of catching up with any hull - or outrunning them, it is well suited for CTF, both for capturing and returning flags, as well as CPs on large maps with multiple points.

Lacking defensive capability, Wasps rely heavily on putting up a strong offense. Alternatively, have an Isida stay adjacent to you, ready to heal should you receive damage.

For Wasps, staying on the move is essential. If you stop moving, you’re as good as dead. Staying still and absorbing damage is a job for heavy hulls.

The high acceleration of Wasps can allow them to attain impressive angles to the ground, thereby setting up a shot at targets high above or far below them.

Driving backwards while shooting the opposite direction and stopping will lift the front part of your hull above the ground, useful for getting on top of other hulls during gold boxes or just parkour.

An important property to note is that turrets are rear mounted on Wasps. Thus, it is safer to drive backwards when practicing hit-and-run, as to minimise exposure; only expose the rear of the hull. If driven forward, nearly the entire hull is visible.

Wasps are small, able to fit through minute gaps that other hulls cannot pass through. Use this to your advantage when escaping an enemy, or going to a camping spot.

What not to do with Wasp

Being the lightest hull, it is not advisable to allow the hull to receive enemy fire concentrated on its side. At the very least, you will miss your shot. At worst, you will flip.

Avoid firing while moving forward. A hit from an enemy shot will lift the front of the hull, which moving forward will only serve to accentuate. Moving backwards, a hit will still have the same effect but for a smaller period of time.

Do not try to assume the roles of a defender; Wasps will be run over when the enemy makes a push. The most you can do in this role is to use Isida or Freeze to help out your allies.

Refrain from shooting sideways as you go up a ramp. There is a reasonable chance that you will flip.

Remember that specific combinations may not work as well as others. An ideal example is Wasp-Twins, which lacks the durability and stability that Twins requires to function well.

Single point CP matches are not the best place for Wasp, where the outcome of the match depends on being able to outlast the opponent on the point. Heavy and medium hulls will rule the battle; a Wasp a the center will be literally vaporised.

Minimise your air time; while it is thrilling to soar over a ramp, remember that a Railgun shot could potentially leave you in a far less interesting position: on your back.

Watch out for mines. A useful tip for any hull.

Final Notes

Wasp is one of the hardest hulls in the game to master, so if you intend to remain dedicated to it, much practice will be in order. The instability, in my opinion, is the most irritating quality of Wasp. But at the same time, it is also what makes gameplay with Wasp so fun, so thrilling - the unpredictability of it all.

It’s a serious choice, to select a hull. The choice will affect all of your future decisions, purchases. Make sure the choice is a good one, and never look back. Regret will only compound your mistakes, and cloud your judgement.
