Updates: How Bad Are They?

We have all been here, a new update set to hit the game in the next week or two, and someone who is not Semyon tells us in the V-logs, and scrolling through the comment section, you see the outrage by everyone, as this episode announced some major game change machinic. Now what stops people being open minded  and a have willingness to give it a try? Nostalgia. That is the main reasons that I have found people don’t like updates and new ways of thinking, it goes against what they are used to.

Nostalgia is, by definition, a wistful want for the past that has a strong association of enjoyment or it was good. Is it possible that your love for the old Tanki has clouded judgement, including mine in the past. Almost everyone here is guilty of this. A few months ago, the camera angle update came around, and everyone, me included, complained how it made us dizzy. Nobody really enjoyed it at the beginning, and everyone wanted the old camera angle back, because it was not what they were used to. Has anyone noticed it anymore? I sure haven’t, and it seems perfectly normal. So then why is it disliked? Because it went against what we were used to, and nobody was willing to look at it with an open mind (me included), and vehemently opposed it.

Next up is the Premium. The sheer amount of dissatisfaction and unhappiness that came out when it was announced, was staggering. Just about everyone (again, me included) was outraged, especially with the Premium Paint at 20% protection. The main thing that angered me was in the idea that buyers could have better protection than the helpers who work so hard. And Tanki actually LISTENED to our complaints, and changed it. So now it is a worthless 15%. And honestly, how many of us actually see Premium tankers in battle? I might see one or two every few battles. The fact is for all the outrage over Premium accounts came to very little. Very little was actually unbalanced, and now it is a part of the game. We have all gotten used to it and stopped caring. If we knew nothing really bad would come, then why did we complain so much? We hate change. It is a part of us as humans. When life throws a curveball, we wiff it. We latter look at that curve and saw “huh, that did not move” and then get enraged over the next one that is different.

The other things constantly complain about is sales. How they used to be so amazing and better than they ever will be now. They never really changed, did they though. Why can’t Tanki have any good sales anymore. Why can’t there be one hour sales anymore? Why can’t Tanki have 50% sales anymore? Things haven’t really changed though. for all the complaints that have come through, they don’t see how little has actually changed. Instead of the 1 hour sales, (which are usually bad for me, as I live in eastern US, and was still in school), we have personal discounts and test drives. These can allow you to do the same thing easier, depending on your luck. And Tanki NEVER has given any good sales or discounts. It is not as good as I remember the sales to be. But think for a second; most MMO’s do not offer any discounts, and the only way to get good equipment is to spend your own money to buy it some point. Not only does Tanki not make it so that you HAVE to buy to be successful, but allows everyone, buyers and non buyers alike to take advantage of them. So A.) you are lucky to even have sales and B.) They have not really changed. While the might be slightly far between,  they still happen, and if you look at the bright side of that, you notice that gives more time to rank and gain crystals.

So what is left. The infamous removal of crystal boxes. What was once a major source of income to many tankers was suddenly, and irrevocably removed. It allowed my garage to expand in my first few months, and who can forget the “mini golds” of the 100 crystal boxes. Getting those was so much fun, and you got a nice addition to your wallet. So why were they removed? There are a few reasons. The main is the amount of” crystal mults”. Those who would just take Titan or Mammoth and just sit on the drop zones and take all of the crystals for themselves. They did not help the team. They just joined a long game, and camped on them, getting a ton crystals. They caused a distraction from the main game. No matter how fun they were, and how they hold a place in our heart, they did, to a certain extent, negatively affect the game in some ways. Funds are now bigger, and the better players, who deserve more crystals, get them. While it is fun to remember the fun we had, was it really that great, or was it something that had been a part forever, and we could not think of a another way?

So why do we hate updates? With our worlds in constant fluctuation, we always look back at what we had and call it better than now. We want to look back at what happened and say, “I really wish we had had that again” and then incessantly complain about what we want, and what we think is best. So is nostalgia a bad thing, and should we base life off of it? Of course nostalgia is not bad. I still fondly look back at 5th grade, when I had a great teacher, no homework on Fridays, and all of my friends always with me. Especially when I doing homework for hours. It is always nice to go back and look at it with fond memories, that is why nostalgia is such a factor. However, we need to learn that sometimes along with looking back we need to look forward, see what good can come out of new events. Instead of always looking back on the “glory days”, but to try and make a new epoch with what we have now.

Quite the thought provoking article! :D  I personally think that nostalgia is a pretty glass-half-empty kinda viewpoint, because you aren't paying attention to all the things so much better that currently exist. I like how you kinda presented both side of the topic to some degree in the article.

It is no fun to read an article that doesn't observe both sides of an argument. Then it is just a rant.

Epoch.

I love that word. If I could I'd like your article again because of that

On a more serious note, I really enjoyed this article. I agree, nostalgia is the cause of a lot of the negativity.

You have another regular commenter, Bry! :D

You perfectly illustrated my views on this subject, except for a few very minor opinion differences.

Um.. Btrb, u totally forgot about the fact that with a recent update, u can buy the the highest modifications at ur rank. Let me give an example.

The total cost of all M's combined of isida turns out to be: 250k (approx) now with a 50% discount in the earlier system, u could get m3 isida at 125k (if u didn't own any modification of isida at all)

With the present system, I never bought any modification of isida and when I got a personal discount at 37% off on M3 I spent only 108k. Therefore the total amount I ever spent on isida is less than I would have in the previous system with a higher discount.

The point of this topic was not about well received updates, but updates we raged against, and no don't care about. However, thank you for the feedback, I was actually debating on these updates, but they were generally well received.
