Gold Guide- Polygon

The Ultimate Gold Guide: Polygon

People love catching golds. They're also addicted to Polygon.

I personally think that catching golds is one of the best parts of Tanki, and have caught a gold at almost every spot in Polygon. So, I have decided to write a complete guide for how to catch a gold at every drop zone in the map.

To start is a few basic tips of gold hunting that applies to catching gold-boxes on any map.

  • Always look for the high ground- Getting on top of tanks is the key, and the best, most reliable way to do so is getting on high ground close to the drop zone.
  • Use a hull that is large in size- while wasp may be fun to use and may catch a few golds, dictator and titan are reliable gold-catching hulls.
  • Be ready to use a supply or two- you gotta drug to catch golds, it is as simple as that.
  • Time it right- This will come with practice, but you need to be able to time when you make your move to get the gold; too early and you get killed, too late you arrive too late

Ok, now that we have gotten the basic tips out of the way, it is time to look at how to catch golds at each drop zone of the map. By the way, the yellow dots that were so prettily drawn in on Paint are the drop zones, and the orange lines are routes to get to the ideal jumping zones.

1 and 2

These drop zones use basically the same method. All it takes is getting to the top of the ramp. While the best position is where my tank is, right next to it is almost just as good, and behind it also works. It is all about timing your jump- most people mess it up here by jumping too early, and getting the gold taken by someone on top of them. If the gold is dropping at the very bottom, make sure to keep your main move to the gold in one constant line of motion, instead of stopping on top of the shed.

Tip: It is wise to make sure you are not pinned against the wall. I have been pushed by so many tanks against the wall, that it took me and extra five seconds to squeeze out into my jump.

This is one of the toughest drop zones on the map. The prime position is on top of the tube, but it is very hard to get right. You have to get to the drop zone within the first two people, but make sure you do not get pushed off too easily. If you do not get on top of the tube to jump, it is best to go from the top of the ramp and hope you can get on top of some people. However, the person on the tube will almost always get the gold.

4 and 5

These zones use the same strategy. The best way to catch a gold on these two is to use the ramp to get on top of someone. It is pretty straightforward. This one also has another strategy. If you come from the right of the upper drop zone marked here, drive a few tanklenghs past the drop zone, then let the tanks coming from the ramp push you slowly (you driving into them, of course).

Tip: If you do not get a great spot on the ramp, it is possible to get on top of them. If there is someone stuck next to the ramp, get on top of them, then drive on other tanks to eventually get on top. It is tough, but still possible.

Almost the exact same strategy as zones 4 and 5, but just coming from a different angle. Once again, it is pretty straightforward. My one caution is to make sure you don't get pushed into the cave/tunnel.

7

ayxfcz.jpg11t1kq1.jpg

This one is my favorite zones on the map, because there are so many ways to get at the gold. My personal favorite is shown in the first picture. If there are tanks in the tunnel waiting to jump, simply jump on top of them and let them drive you up into the gold. This starting place is uncontested, so almost always available. The other, more popular zone, is shown in picture 2. I'm sure you have seen it used, but it is a hard place to get, and you will inevitably be pushed away from the ideal zone.

Tip: While at most spots, timing of your jump counts, at this one, timing of your arrival at the jump zone is crucial. Come too early and you get pushed off of the ideal place, too late and the spot is already occupied. Also don't be afraid to push someone else away- all if fair in love and catching gold boxes (I think thats how the phrase goes).

This one is interesting. It sometimes does not have as many people competing for the gold, as they simply do not find the zone. The strategy involves lifting the front of your tank off the ground using the rails of the bridge, then getting on top of the pile. I would recommend using the side away from the center of the map, as there is oftentimes many more tanks on the other side of the bridge.

Now for my second favorite drop zone. The strategy shown in both pictures is the same. Jump on the tanks that will inevitably be camped on the drop zone from the raised areas. I would recommenced using the place in the top picture, as it is generally not as well-used, meaning it is easier to get to.

10

The best way to get this gold means you have to get to the drop zone early. If you're using a big tank (you should, if you want to catch a gold), block off the entryway to the drop zone. Shoot at people that try to get through, and let the gold fall uncontested. While this will not completely work, there will most likely only be 2 or so people under the drop zone with you, as there will still be a bottleneck once you stop blocking off the entrance.

Tip: If you happen to be in the awkward situation where you and an enemy both arrive at the drop zone early, be the first one to fire. They will almost always start killing you first, so be sure to initiate the battle to increase your chances of staying alive. Also, if you get to the zone early enough and this happens, DO NOT use your repair kit (unless using titan or mammoth), as you will die and be able to return to the drop zone.

11

vxhl6x.jpg

This one is pretty easy. Just get a good position on the ramp, and jump at the gold. A very easy spot if you are using dictator, but next to impossible if you are using wasp or hornet.

12 and 13

2ew05fs.jpg

Drop zone 13 (the one farthest away in the picture, is the worst drop zone of the map. There is not much skill involved, unless you get lucky enough to hitch a ride over to the drop zone from where pictured. If you don't get a ride, drive off to a side of the zone closest to where people will be pushing you, so you get pushed on top of the zone, not away from the zone. Zone 12 is almost identical to zone 11, so the same method is used there.

14 and 15

2mffdae.jpg

Zone 15 is just as bad a zone as 13. Use the same "strategy" as previously described. Zone 14 is pretty much identical to zone 12, so once again, same strategy. There is a second strategy, so read the next little paragraph for that.

14 and 16

2w4kz9d.jpg

This starting point uses the same strategy for both zones. Drive to the left of the ramp, and jump onto someone that is emerging from underneath. Then, just ride over to the zone on top of them (if you get lucky). For zone 16, if you don't get lucky, it is better to push the pile from the left of the picture, as most tanks are lined up parallel with the ramp.

Dictator Tip: The best way to "lag" on top of someone using dictator is to have people drive into your sides. You will almost always pop on top, so if you are planning on using your nice, cheap advantage to get a gold, make sure to position yourself so people are driving into your sides.

That sums it up! I hope this guide was helpful, and feel free to share anything that I missed in the comments.

Nice work !!

This is really helpful especially for the beginners .  :)

I want you to work on some other maps also like Noise

Because I have not gotten any gold in Noise yet :P  ..

A minor change is needed in my view

at the end of 10

as you will die and not be able to return to the drop zone.

 Thumbs up  :)

I will, but it will be a few weeks until I get another opportunity to write a guide.

Sorry, I made this point really unclear, let me elaborate. If you an an enemy are close together at that drop zone within 10 seconds of the siren, initiate combat with them. If they are about to kill you, let them (unless using titan or mammoth). If you use your repair kit in that little 1v1, you will most likely die before the gold hits the ground. However, if you get killed, you will most likely get back to the drop zone in time, and you will have your repair kit.

I was literally thinking of writing Gold guides for specific maps but Jwimm beat me to it. Nice article btw. But #13 is the easiest Gold zone in that area... You need to go on to that ramp where #11 drops and wait for it to drop. When it drops, use that ramp thingy to get onto someone and it should be an easy take.

I always just use dictator's hardcore lagging abilities at that one. If I'm not using dictator, then I just pretty much drive blindly into the pile lol.

Nice article Jwimmer!
You saying you forgot about one drop zone, the one in front of the tunnel that's in Point A :) also In DM Mode the gold can also drop in the middle. :))

Check out #7. And yes, the center is a drop zone, but I have no experience seeing a gold there.
