A Meeting with an Evangelist

23rd June 2013

Like any other normal day, I woke up to my dog barking next to my bed indicating that he wanted his first meal of the day. It was pouring heavily that morning. The entire atmosphere was a bit eerie and philosophical. I stepped out in my balcony with my Java and gazed at the darkness of what was supposed to be a bright day. While Leo(my pet) was churning on his breakfast, his elder brother was quite lost that morning. It had been twenty days since I came back from my university for my summer break. I had already begun a couple of online courses and was hitting the gymnasium regularly. Despite acquiring new knowledge and taking care of my health, something was missing.

After  a couple of hours, my parents were having their morning tea in the living room and talking about community, politics and innovative ways of cleaning Leo's dirt all around the house. Imagine waking up to this hysterical conversation every single morning. Both of them eventually gave up. My father turned towards me while taking the last sip of his tea and told me that he has a surprise for me. What could it be? After minutes of worthless guessing, I put on my best shirt and trousers and left the house with dad. Both of us were sitting in the backseat of my father's new car and I could not help but wonder what the surprise was. "Where are you taking me dad?", I finally asked  just to break the awkward silence. He told me that he was taking me to meet an evangelist. " What is an evangelist?", I asked taking out my phone and trying to google the term. He gave me one of his typical smiles and reminded me that it was still a surprise. He took the phone and kept it out of my arm's reach. We reached my dad's old workplace. After crossing through two or three layers of security, we landed in  front of  a wooden door with a plate on it. It read-" Bernard Thomas, CEO".

My father knocked and entered with a smile as if he was reuniting with one of his long lost  best friends. Mr. Bernard was tall and old. He was smoking, sitting on his giant chair and examining the heap of files that lay in front of him. He hugged my father and greeted me with a very positive smile. After listening to my father and Bernard talk about each other and their businesses, my father finally introduced me in a very brief manner. We spoke about my university life for the initial fifteen minutes. After the small talk, he finally asked me 'The' question," What is that one thing that makes you, an evangelist?". Once again, I could not think what the word meant and looked at my father in search of some sort of assistance. Mr. Bernard looked at me and laughed in a very childish way which was followed  by a drag. He looked at me and asked me what made me happy. What makes my day complete? Is Engineering really what I wanted to study or is there something else which gives me real happiness. Amidst all these questions, I found myself without any answers. I was awestruck by the way Uncle left me speechless in those mere twenty minutes. " Is this what an evangelist means?", I asked with an inquisitive face. He smiled and said that it was pretty close to the true essence of the beautiful word. He pulled his chair closer to the table for the first time and told me the real meaning of the word. It goes like this:

An Evangelist is a person who spreads a purpose which is positive in nature. He/She has simply found what is the sole purpose of his/her life. After realizing what you stand for, if you are able to spread the idea of introspecting yourself and finding your own purpose, you are an "Evangelist".

The next puzzle that lay in front of me was: How do I become an evangelist? How do I make sure that I am doing what I love? Mr. Bernard appreciated my curiosity and said that the answer lies in the definition. Before becoming an evangelist, I need to introspect myself and go deep in my mind. Remember when we were kids and had so much passion to become an astronaut or a footballer. What happened to all that craziness? Where did the fire go? Soon I realized that I need to protect that flame of mine. This brings me to my "Flame Concept". As I mentioned earlier, I need to protect my flame. What the hell is this flame  that I am talking about again and again? This flame is a mixture of your deepest desires and your passion. It is a unique property which belongs to only you out of the seven billion people in this whole world. This flame is burning with all its power till you start pouring negative thoughts in your mind. And all these negative thoughts accumulate up into one big monster called as "Fear". Life happens. The monster starts doing his work and most of the people let him take their fire down. They forget all about their passion and desires. They choose to traverse the famous path because they do not want to take that risk of traveling away from the herd. They thought that if they would take the road less traveled, they would not be revered in the society with respect and would be tagged as insane. Imagine Success as the most beautiful woman in this world. Mr. Bernard finally stubbed his poison down and told me that success is a very choosy woman. She will not give any attention to people who are rich or people who are good looking. She looks for people with a heart of steel. She looks for people who have the courage to listen to themselves and follow the path that they have laid. In a more informal way, she prefers guts. He looked at me and gave me the "Note the pun" smile. When you are successful in finding your flame, all you need to do is protect it. Protect your flame from the demons inside you. Go back and write the things you love the most. List down the things that you wanted to become when you were a kid. Forget all the negativity in this world for once and be yourself. Rekindle the fire and conquer the world. The Room felt like a library for the next minute and Uncle got up from his chair. He walked up to me and embraced me. It was a magical moment. After the beautiful one hour session that I had with Mr. Bernard, he dropped us back to my dad's fancy car. Not a single word was spoken on our way back home. Only emotions and realization.

When I studied myself, I realized that motivating others keeps me happy. Making everyone smile around me gives me a feeling which cannot be put into words. I am not saying that I have found myself at such a young age. I am still in search of the fire that I used to have when I was unaware of the atrocities of this world.  I am still a traveler searching for meaning. Sharing all these thoughts is what I think makes me an evangelist in the true sense. I want each and everyone of you to just take a couple of hours out of your precious time and introspect yourself. Apply the flame concept to your life and travel to the deepest trenches of your mind. Find that torch and bring it back, to rekindle that fire. Just imagine your mind without all that negativity. You will move mountains my friend. When I went back to bed, I realized the missing element when I started the day. It was nothing but my flame.

I'd also like to add more to this.

"Success is a lousy teacher, it only seduces people into thinking that they can't fail" - Bill Gates

There's no better teacher than failure and therefore don't be afraid to fail and learn from failure.
