Kestral Lore:

Volume 2

“So, what makes you think that you should be able to join our lord, Nightwalker’s elite force?”

She answered immediately.”I have revenge among the leaders there, for never revealing my real name, and biological father, I will stop at no costs to destroy all traces of the Spire, once and for all”. The robot paused, realizing this woman was serious. She was passing with flying colors. She would be accepted to the elite force, no question about it.

The robot asked,”What’s your name, as you will be accepted to the elite force?”.

The woman paused for a moment, and spoke,”Please, call me Kestrel”.

3 months earlier

Sighing, she returned to her retrieval point. She had made a choice, and she had to stick with it. It was about 4 hours since she shot the robot. Failure was taken very seriously at the Spire and she doubted that she would ever even step in the building again. Regardless of the fact, she figured it would be best to at least to return to the retrieval point, she couldn't even think of a life without the Spire backing her up.

She found the retrieval point, located in one of the Spire’s safehouses. There was a soldier posted at the entry, and he asked her the password,

“Green, Carrot”, the guard said.

She answered,”Blue, Apple”, the password for the day. Then she went in, and told her commanding officer about her failure, and everything that had caused it. The commanding officer took it all in, with very little emotion, but inside his mind, the woman knew what was going on. The commanding officer, whose call sign was Ice Wolf, was quite fond of the woman. She was one of the best, but rules were rules, and failure would result in being expelled from the Spire.

Ice Wolf talked to the woman, and eventually expelling her from the Spire.

She thought of how things might’ve gone differently, perhaps she could’ve killed Nightwalker, and sacrificed her life. At least she would’ve died in a noble sort of way. But instead, she was being expelled, never to be able to set foot in the academy again.

What would she do? She lived there for as long as she could remember, they gave her food, taught her how to survive, taught her how to live. But in her heart, she knew that this was the best choice.

She silently nodded her head and left.

But before she could leave the safehouse, gone forever to Ice Wolf, he quickly handed a pack.

“Here take this, it’s the best I can do for you”, he solemnly spoke.

She answered,”Thank you, what’s inside?”

“Enough bitcoin to last you a year, as well as a file, your file. It was given to me of course when you were assigned the mission. I wasn’t able to any of it yet, as custom is to read it when you get successfully finish your first mission, but since it’ll be destroyed, I thought you would like to have it. I also added a couple of extras and whatnot”.

She paused, not knowing whether knowing her past could be worse than knowing, but still she answered,”Thank you sir, my best wishes to you”.

“And to you too”.

And with that, she walked out of the door with the pack slung over her shoulder and her bow and quiver in the other.

She knew what the world was like, she would survive, without the Spire, eventually. As for now, she thought she should probably find a place to stay. She took out her military grade phone, searching for the nearest place to rest, but in the middle of the Tx. Hà Tiên, Vietnam, there weren’t many places to stay that suited her needs. But she finally found an inn, in the back of town, that overlooked a plaza. In case of an ambush, she could easily escape into the crowd.

Sighing, she paid for a room for the next week. Entered her room and slept for the rest of the night.

******

She woke up to the soft knocking on the door, and the call of room service. Quickly, she got up silently, crept to her pack, retrieved her knife, and walked carefully to the door, making sure her feet didn’t make any unnecessary noise.

Taking her position against the wall, she listened.

Elite warriors like her were specially trained to hear even the slightest noises. Being an elite, she had hearing abilities that were almost in-human to some people. But to her, it was just a matter of daily life.

She identified three men outside her door. Two were taking position against the side of the door, while the other was standing in front of her door. Based on how carefully they breathed, she guessed that they were from the Spire, ready to finish the job.

Failure was not tolerated and she would’ve been killed if she had returned to the Spire. But Ice Wolf had spared her, knowing that she was too valuable to the human race to die.

Carefully, she walked back to her bedside, where her pack, and the rest of her belongings were, including her bow and quiver.  Silently picking them up, she hopped over the balcony rail, and into the plaza below.

But not before planting a bomb in front of the door. The second the Spire’s soldiers would enter a small explosion releasing thousands of tiny micro glass fibers would be released, embedding themselves in the soldier's skin, cutting through the standard Spire armor. But not only would this be incredibly painful, but the glass was also coated with sodium thiopental.

Sodium thiopental, or more commonly known as truth serum, is a chemical substance that slows down electrical pulses into the brain. Once the soldier's blood stream was contaminated by sodium thiopental, it would take at least an hour or two for it to wear off. Plenty of time for her to make her escape.

She heard the explosion now, as she jumped three stories below, absorbing the impact using her legs, as well as special rubber boots that used pressurized air to help absorb the shock as well. She then ran, and ran, and ran, to the outside of the city, almost 16 miles. This was an easy distance for her, in fact, she could jog for almost 6 hours straight, but that was only on an even track. Here, she had to dodge people, and once out of the town, she had to hop over rocks, streams, and above all, she couldn’t be seen.

There was no doubt that the Spire recognized how talented she was, so the doubt of sending just three men was highly unlikely. Once the explosion was heard, and reported to authorities, the Spire would immediately realize what happened.

She had escaped, and they would send a full team to track her down. She had to get as far away from the town as possible.

After catching her breath, she found a suitable place to rest for the remainder of the night. A high cave, with only one entrance. She couldn’t be sneaked upon, and if she needed too, she could active her Cam Cloak.

Cam Cloak where special cloaks that allowed whatever underneath it to be essentially invisible. Millions of dollars were put into military technology by the UN 6 years ago. And they finally developed a revolutionary invention that changed the nanoworld forever.

Nanoglass. One nanoglass was capable of projecting whatever color it needed, in whatever shade needed, and in whatever darkness needed. Combined with the fact that there were millions of nanoglass on a single Cam Cloak, it could create an image of something that was almost impossible to pick out with the naked eye.

The user picked a set image, in which the computer would make using the nanoglass. It would also use a series of sensors and cameras to detect surrounding variables that could possibly make the image unrealistic. The entire process happened in a blink of an eye, so it’s incredibly useful for stealthy missions.

An hour later, she finally made the cave into a makeshift camp. Everything could easily be packed in less than 30 seconds, as well as a few well placed sensors around the cave to alert her if anyone, or anything was coming.

She sighed, eating a small dinner, using the rations she found in the pack, given to her by Ice Wolf. But then she remembered her file, and realized that she should probably read it. But she was stunned by what she saw.

File #: Agent 256

Name: Confidential

Age: 18

D.O.B: Unknown

Gender: Female

Parents: Joseph (deceased by Spire), Mary (deceased by Spire), last names: Unknown

Notes:

  • Extraordinary women, passes all classes with flying colors. Possible threat to Spire, termination date, 12.04.2042

  • In case of agreed termination, please be cautious, can easily escape any Elite member of the Spire

  • Parents were deceased by Spire due to knowledge of secret weapon (confidential), Spire found child, hidden in house, training started a week after

She took it all in, her heart hardening with every moment. They killed her parents, they lied to her.  She had been brought up taught that her parents had left her, but they died protecting information. They killed them, and she would have her revenge.

But not only that, the worst part was that they were planning to kill her off as well. Just because she was becoming too good of a soldier. In fact, she would’ve been killed in 3 months, if it hadn’t been for her failed mission.

She swore, what would she do? Her heart started to burn with rage. She would take revenge against the entire Spire. But she couldn't’ let her emotions get the better of her now. She knew it would be impossible for her to destroy the Spire alone. A high protected military facility would need to be assaulted only against another group, possibly close to an army of other Elite soldiers. But where would she find more like her.

She paused, realizing the answer. Nightwalker. The reason why the Spire wanted him dead was because he had another group of soldiers like her.

She would join him and his soldiers, and together, as a team, they would destroy the Spire, forever.

The robot asked,”What’s your name, as you will be accepted to the elite force?”.

The woman paused for a moment, and spoke. ”Please, call me Kestrel. It was the name my parents gave me after all. I feel that I had better keep the only thing that they gave me.

The robot responded,”Well then, please call me Alpha. I am Nightwalker’s right handed, well robot. Welcome, to his team of soldiers, we call ourselves, Night Raid.
