It'll easily be abused by the players. If someone puts their real age its just easy info of a player. A 10 year old could be targeted by older men if they put their age. Its unnecessary because its just extra info that isn't needed

Why is it so important to you for strangers all over the globe to know you are 18 years old, your birthday is February 27 and you were born in 1999? How many people in how many countries do you think really care? Everyone was born at some time. No big news there. 

 

I might be prone to put I'm 110 years old, born January 1 in 1908. Then later change it to December 25, 2017 and leave the age blank. So how old am I and do you really care?

Only ForumsAdministrators are able to set a date if they wish to. Most chose not to do that, some did. However, it has nothing to do with abuse or taking advantage, because it doesn't actually give any advantage to have a date there.
